1 Jakob så at det var korn i Egypt, og han sa til sønnene sine: "Hvorfor sitter dere bare og ser på hverandre?"

Now Jacob saw that there was grain in Egypt, and Jacob said to his sons, "Why do you look at one another?"

2 Han sa: "Se, jeg har hørt at det er korn i Egypt. Dra ned dit og kjøp for oss derfra, så vi kan leve og ikke dø."

He said, "Behold, I have heard that there is grain in Egypt. Go down there, and buy for us from there, so that we may live, and not die."

3 Josefs ti brødre dro ned for å kjøpe korn fra Egypt.

Joseph's ten brothers went down to buy grain from Egypt.

4 Men Jakob sendte ikke Benjamin, Josefs bror, sammen med brødrene, for han sa: "Kanskje det hender noe ondt med ham."

But Jacob didn't send Benjamin, Joseph's brother, with his brothers; for he said, "Lest perhaps harm happen to him."

5 Israels sønner kom blant de andre som kom for å kjøpe, for hungersnøden var i Kanaans land.

The sons of Israel came to buy among those who came, for the famine was in the land of Canaan.

6 Josef var herskeren over landet, og han solgte korn til alle folkene i landet. Josefs brødre kom og bøyde seg for ham med ansiktene til jorden.

Joseph was the governor over the land. It was he who sold to all the people of the land. Joseph's brothers came, and bowed themselves down to him with their faces to the earth.

7 Josef så brødrene sine, og han kjente dem igjen, men oppførte seg som en fremmed mot dem og talte hardt til dem. Han sa til dem: "Hvor kommer dere fra?" De sa: "Fra Kanaans land for å kjøpe mat."

Joseph saw his brothers, and he recognized them, but acted like a stranger to them, and spoke roughly with them. He said to them, "Where did you come from?" They said, "From the land of Canaan to buy food."

8 Josef kjente igjen brødrene sine, men de kjente ikke ham.

Joseph recognized his brothers, but they didn't recognize him.

9 Josef husket drømmene han hadde drømt om dem, og han sa til dem: "Dere er spioner! Dere har kommet for å se på landets sårbarhet."

Joseph remembered the dreams which he dreamed about them, and said to them, "You are spies! You have come to see the nakedness of the land."

10 De sa til ham: "Nei, herre, men dine tjenere har kommet for å kjøpe mat.

They said to him, "No, my lord, but your servants have come to buy food.

11 Vi er sønner av én mann; vi er ærlige menn. Dine tjenere er ikke spioner."

We are all one man's sons; we are honest men. Your servants are not spies."

12 Han sa til dem: "Nei, men dere har kommet for å se på landets sårbarhet."

He said to them, "No, but you have come to see the nakedness of the land."

13 De sa: "Dine tjenere er tolv brødre, sønner av én mann i Kanaans land; og se, den yngste er i dag hos vår far, og én er ikke mer."

They said, "We, your servants, are twelve brothers, the sons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is no more."

14 Josef sa til dem: "Det er som jeg har sagt til dere: Dere er spioner.

Joseph said to them, "It is like I told you, saying, 'You are spies.'

15 Dette skal dere testes på. Ved faraos liv, dere skal ikke få dra herfra, med mindre deres yngste bror kommer hit.

Hereby you shall be tested. By the life of Pharaoh you shall not go forth from here, unless your youngest brother come here.

16 Send én av dere av sted for å hente deres bror, mens dere andre blir satt i fengsel, for å se om deres ord er sanne. Hvis ikke, ved faraos liv, da er dere sannelig spioner."

Send one of you, and let him get your brother, and you shall be bound, that your words may be tested, whether there is truth in you, or else by the life of Pharaoh surely you are spies."

17 Han satte dem alle i varetekt i tre dager.

He put them all together into custody three days.

18 Josef sa til dem den tredje dagen: "Dette skal dere gjøre, så skal dere leve, for jeg frykter Gud.

Joseph said to them the third day, "Do this, and live, for I fear God.

19 Hvis dere er ærlige menn, så la en av brødrene deres bli igjen som fange i deres fengsel; men gå dere, og ta med dere korn for hungersnøden i deres hjem.

If you are honest men, then let one of your brothers be bound in your prison-house; but you go, carry grain for the famine of your houses.

20 Ta deres yngste bror med til meg, så deres ord kan bekreftes, og dere ikke dør." Så gjorde de.

Bring your youngest brother to me; so will your words be verified, and you won't die." They did so.

21 De sa til hverandre: "Vi er sannelig skyldige overfor vår bror, fordi vi så hans nød, da han bønnfalt oss, men vi ville ikke høre. Derfor har denne nøden kommet over oss."

They said one to another, "We are most assuredly guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the distress of his soul, when he begged us, and we wouldn't listen. Therefore this distress has come on us."

22 Ruben svarte dem og sa: "Sa jeg ikke til dere: 'Synd ikke mot barnet'? Men dere ville ikke høre. Derfor kreves hans blod nå."

Reuben answered them, saying, "Didn't I tell you, saying, 'Don't sin against the child,' and you wouldn't listen? Therefore also, behold, his blood is required."

23 De visste ikke at Josef forsto dem, for det var en tolk mellom dem.

They didn't know that Joseph understood them; for there was an interpreter between them.

24 Han vendte seg bort fra dem og gråt. Så vendte han tilbake til dem, snakket med dem, og tok Simeon fra dem og bandt ham foran øynene deres.

He turned himself about from them, and wept, and he returned to them, and spoke to them, and took Simeon from among them, and bound him before their eyes.

25 Josef ga ordre om å fylle sekkene deres med korn, gi pengene deres tilbake i hver manns sekk, og gi dem proviant for reisen. Så ble det gjort med dem.

Then Joseph commanded to fill their bags with grain, and to restore every man's money into his sack, and to give them food for the way. So it done to them.

26 De lastet eslene sine med kornet og dro derfra.

They loaded their donkeys with their grain, and departed from there.

27 Da en av dem åpnet sekken sin for å gi eslet sitt fôr på herberget, fant han pengene sine, for de lå i munnen av sekken hans.

As one of them opened his sack to give his donkey food in the lodging-place, he saw his money. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack.

28 Han sa til brødrene sine: "Pengene mine er gitt tilbake! Se, de er i sekken min." Da ble de redde og skjelvende sa de til hverandre: "Hva er dette Gud har gjort mot oss?"

He said to his brothers, "My money is restored! Behold, it is even in my sack." Their hearts failed them, and they turned trembling one to another, saying, "What is this that God has done to us?"

29 De kom til Jakob, faren sin, i Kanaans land og fortalte ham alt som hadde hendt dem, og sa,

They came to Jacob their father to the land of Canaan, and told him all that had happened to them, saying,

30 "Mannen, landets herre, talte hardt med oss, og tok oss for landets spioner.

"The man, the lord of the land, spoke roughly with us, and took us for spies of the country.

31 Vi sa til ham: 'Vi er ærlige menn, vi er ikke spioner.

We said to him, 'We are honest men. We are no spies.

32 Vi er tolv brødre, sønner av vår far. Én er ikke mer, og den yngste er i dag hos vår far i Kanaans land.'

We are twelve brothers, sons of our father; one is no more, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.'

33 Mannen, landets herre, sa til oss: 'Slik vil jeg vite at dere er ærlige menn. La en av brødrene bli igjen hos meg, ta med korn for hungersnøden i deres hjem og dra av sted.

The man, the lord of the land, said to us, 'Hereby will I know that you are honest men. Leave one of your brothers with me, and take grain for the famine of your houses, and go your way.

34 Ta den yngste broren deres med til meg, så jeg kan vite at dere ikke er spioner, men ærlige menn. Da vil jeg gi broren deres tilbake til dere, og dere kan handle i landet.'"

Bring your youngest brother to me. Then I will know that you are not spies, but that you are honest men. So I will deliver your brother to you, and you shall trade in the land.'"

35 Da de tømte sekkene sine, se, var hvert manns pengepose i sekken hans. Da de og faren så pengesposene, ble de redde.

It happened as they emptied their sacks, that behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack. When they and their father saw their bundles of money, they were afraid.

36 Jakob, faren deres, sa til dem: "Dere har gjort meg barnløs! Josef er ikke mer, Simeon er ikke mer, og nå vil dere ta Benjamin. Alle disse tingene er mot meg."

Jacob, their father, said to them, "You have bereaved me of my children! Joseph is no more, Simeon is no more, and you want to take Benjamin away. All these things are against me."

37 Ruben sa til sin far: "Drep mine to sønner hvis jeg ikke bringer ham tilbake til deg. Overlat ham til meg, og jeg skal bringe ham tilbake."

Reuben spoke to his father, saying, "Kill my two sons, if I don't bring him to you. Deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to you again."

38 Han sa: "Min sønn skal ikke dra ned med dere, for hans bror er død, og han alene er igjen. Hvis noe ondt skulle hende med ham på veien dere går, vil dere bringe mine grå hår med sorg ned i dødsriket."

He said, "My son shall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he only is left. If harm happens to him by the way in which you go, then you will bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol."
