1 I det andre året til kong Darius, på den første dagen i den sjette måneden, kom Herrens ord gjennom profeten Haggai til Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og til ypperstepresten Josva, sønn av Jehozadak, og sa:

In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, in the first day of the month, the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai, the prophet, to Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,

2 Dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Dette folket sier: 'Tiden er ennå ikke kommet, tiden for å bygge Herrens hus.'

"This is what Yahweh of Hosts says: These people say, 'The time hasn't yet come, the time for Yahweh's house to be built.'"

3 Så kom Herrens ord gjennom profeten Haggai, og sa:

Then the Word of Yahweh came by Haggai, the prophet, saying,

4 Er det tid for dere å bo i deres kledde hus, mens dette huset ligger i ruiner?

"Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses, while this house lies waste?

5 Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Tenk nøye over deres veger.

Now therefore this is what Yahweh of Hosts says: Consider your ways.

6 Dere har sådd mye, men innhøstet lite. Dere spiser, men blir ikke mette. Dere drikker, men blir ikke utørstet. Dere kler dere, men ingen blir varm, og han som tjener lønn, legger den i en pung med hull.

You have sown much, and bring in little. You eat, but you don't have enough. You drink, but you aren't filled with drink. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm, and he who earns wages earns wages to put them into a bag with holes in it."

7 Dette sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Tenk nøye over deres veger.

This is what Yahweh of Hosts says: "Consider your ways.

8 Gå opp til fjellet, hent trelast og bygg huset. Jeg skal finne behag i det og bli æret, sier Herren.

Go up to the mountain, bring wood, and build the house. I will take pleasure in it, and I will be glorified," says Yahweh.

9 Dere ventet på mye, men se, det ble lite; og når dere brakte det hjem, blåste jeg det bort. Hvorfor? sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud. Fordi mitt hus ligger i ruiner, mens hver av dere er opptatt med sitt eget hus.

"You looked for much, and, behold, it came to little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?" says Yahweh of Hosts, "Because of my house that lies waste, while each of you is busy with his own house.

10 Derfor holder himmelen dugg tilbake for deres skyld, og jorden tilbakeholder sin frukt.

Therefore for your sake the heavens withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.

11 Jeg kalte på tørke over landet, over fjellene, over kornet, over den nye vinen, over oljen, over det som jorden frembringer, over mennesker, over dyr og over alt arbeidet av hendene.

I called for a drought on the land, on the mountains, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on that which the ground brings forth, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of the hands."

12 Da adlød Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, og Josva, sønn av Jehozadak, ypperstepresten, med hele resten av folket, Herrens, deres Guds røst, og ordene til profeten Haggai, slik Herren, deres Gud, hadde sendt ham; og folket fryktet Herren.

Then Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, and Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, with all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of Yahweh, their God, and the words of Haggai, the prophet, as Yahweh, their God, had sent him; and the people feared Yahweh.

13 Så talte Haggai, Herrens sendebud, Herrens budskap til folket, og sa: Jeg er med dere, sier Herren.

Then Haggai, Yahweh's messenger, spoke in Yahweh's message to the people, saying, "I am with you," says Yahweh.

14 Herren vakte ånden til Serubabel, sønn av Sjealtiel, stattholderen i Juda, og ånden til Josva, sønn av Jehozadak, ypperstepresten, og ånden til hele resten av folket; og de kom og arbeidet på huset til Herren, hærskarenes Gud,

Yahweh stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people; and they came and worked on the house of Yahweh of Hosts, their God,

15 på den tjuefjerde dagen i måneden, i den sjette måneden, i det andre året til kong Darius.

in the twenty-fourth day of the month, in the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.
