1 Ve dem som vedtar urettferdige lover, og de skriverne som skriver ondskap.

Woe to those who decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers who write perverseness;

2 For å vende de trengende bort fra rettferd, og berøve de fattige blant mitt folk sin rett, for at enker kan bli deres bytte og de farløse deres rov!

to turn aside the needy from justice, and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

3 Hva vil dere gjøre på straffens dag, når ødeleggelsen kommer fra det fjerne? Til hvem vil dere flykte for hjelp? Og hvor vil dere etterlate deres herlighet?

What will you do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation which shall come from far? to whom will you flee for help? and where will you leave your glory?

4 De skal bare bøye seg ned blant fangene og falle blant de drepte. For alt dette har hans vrede ikke vendt seg bort, men hans hånd er fortsatt utstrakt.

They shall only bow down under the prisoners, and shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

5 Ve Assyria, min vredes stav, staven i hans hånd er min harme!

Ho Assyrian, the rod of my anger, the staff in whose hand is my indignation!

6 Jeg vil sende ham mot et gudløst folk, og gi ham befaling mot folket jeg er vred på, for å ta bytte og plyndre, og tråkke dem ned som skitt i gatene.

I will send him against a profane nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

7 Men hans hensikt er ikke slik, og hans hjerte tenker det ikke; men det er i hans hjerte å ødelegge og utslette mange folkeslag.

However he doesn't mean so, neither does his heart think so; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off not a few nations.

8 For han sier: Er ikke alle mine fyrster konger?

For he says, Aren't my princes all of them kings?

9 Er ikke Kalno som Karkemisj? Er ikke Hamat som Arpad? Er ikke Samaria som Damaskus?

Isn't Calno as Carchemish? Isn't Hamath as Arpad? Isn't Samaria as Damascus?

10 Som min hånd har funnet avgudenes kongeriker, hvis utskårne bilder overgår Jerusalems og Samarias;

As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, whose engraved images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11 skal jeg ikke, slik jeg har gjort med Samaria og hennes avguder, slik gjøre med Jerusalem og hennes bilder?

shall I not, as I have done to Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

12 Derfor skal det skje, når Herren har fullført hele sitt verk på Sion-fjellet og i Jerusalem, at jeg vil straffe den stolte hjerten av Assyrias konge og imponerende blikk.

Therefore it shall happen that, when the Lord has performed his whole work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks.

13 For han har sagt: Med min hånds styrke har jeg gjort det, og med min visdom; for jeg har forstand. Jeg har fjernet folkets grenser og ranet deres skatter, og som en mektig mann har jeg slått ned de som sitter på troner.

For he has said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have understanding: and I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and like a valiant man I have brought down those who sit [on thrones]:

14 Og min hånd har funnet folkets rikdommer som et rede; og som man samler forlatte egg, har jeg samlet hele jorden, og det var ingen som beveget en vinge, eller åpnet munnen, eller kvitret.

and my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth: and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

15 Skal øksen rose seg mot ham som hogger med den? Skal sagen forstørre seg mot ham som bruker den? Som om staven skulle veie den som løfter den, eller stokken skulle løfte ham som ikke er av tre.

Shall the axe boast itself against him who hews therewith? Shall the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? as if a rod should wield those who lift it up, [or] as if a staff should lift up [him who is] not wood.

16 Derfor skal Herren, hærskarenes Gud, sende magerhet blant sine feite, og under hans herlighet skal det tennes en ild som brenner som ild.

Therefore will the Lord, Yahweh of Hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.

17 Israels lys skal bli en ild, og hans Hellige en flamme; og den vil brenne og fortære hans torner og tistler på en dag.

The light of Israel will be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame; and it will burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.

18 Han vil fortære hans skogs prakt, og hans fruktbare mark, både sjel og kropp, og det skal være som når en faneholder besvimer.

He will consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and it shall be as when a standard-bearer faints.

19 Resten av trærne i hans skog skal være så få at et barn kan skrive dem.

The remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, so that a child may write them.

20 På den dagen skal Israels rest, og de som unnslapp fra Jakobs hus, ikke mer stole på ham som slo dem, men skal stole på Herren, Israels Hellige, i sannhet.

It shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and those who are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again lean on him who struck them, but shall lean on Yahweh, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 En rest skal vende tilbake, selv Jakobs rest, til den mektige Gud.

A remnant shall return, [even] the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God.

22 For selv om ditt folk, Israel, er som havets sand, skal bare en rest vende tilbake; en ødeleggelse er bestemt, overstrømmende av rettferdighet.

For though your people, Israel, be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant of them shall return: a destruction [is] determined, overflowing with righteousness.

23 For en fullbyrdelse, fast bestemt, vil Herren, hærskarenes Gud, gjøre midt på jorden.

For a full end, and that determined, will the Lord, Yahweh of Hosts, make in the midst of all the earth.

24 Derfor sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, til mitt folk som bor i Sion: Frykt ikke for Assyria, selv om de slår deg med staven og løfter opp stokken mot deg som i Egypt.

Therefore thus says the Lord, Yahweh of Hosts, my people who dwell in Zion, don't be afraid of the Assyrian, though he strike you with the rod, and lift up his staff against you, after the manner of Egypt.

25 For om kort tid skal min vrede vendes bort, og min harme rettes mot deres ødeleggelse.

For yet a very little while, and the indignation [against you] shall be accomplished, and my anger [shall be directed] to his destruction.

26 Herren, hærskarenes Gud, vil oppreise en svepe mot dem, som i Midjans slakt ved Orebs stein, og hans stav skal være over havet, og han vil løfte den opp som han gjorde i Egypt.

Yahweh of Hosts will stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and his rod will be over the sea, and he will lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

27 Det skal skje på den dagen at hans byrde skal tas bort fra dine skuldre, og hans åk fra din nakke, og åket skal bli brutt på grunn av fedme.

It shall happen in that day, that his burden shall depart from off your shoulder, and his yoke from off your neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness.

28 Han har kommet til Ajat, han har passert gjennom Migron; i Mikmas legger han ned sin last.

He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron; at Michmash he lays up his baggage;

29 De har gått over kløften; de har slått leir ved Geba; Rama skjelver; Sauls Gibeah flykter.

they are gone over the pass; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30 Rop høyt med stemmen, Gallims datter! Lytt, Laisha! Stakkars Anatot!

Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of Gallim! listen, Laishah! You poor Anathoth!

31 Madmena er en flyktning; innbyggerne i Gebim flyr for sikkerhets skyld.

Madmenah is a fugitive; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety.

32 Denne dagen skal han stanse ved Nob: han rister hånden mot Sions datters fjell, mot Jerusalems høyde.

This very day shall he halt at Nob: he shakes his hand at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem.

33 Se, Herren, hærskarenes Gud, skal kutte grenene med skrekk: de høye i vekst skal hogges ned, og de storslåtte skal bringes lavt.

Behold, the Lord, Yahweh of Hosts, will lop the boughs with terror: and the high of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be brought low.

34 Han skal hugge ned skogens tykkelser med jern, og Libanon skal falle for den mektige.

He will cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one.
