1 Da kong Hiskia hørte dette, rev han klærne sine, tok på seg sekkestrie og gikk inn i Herrens hus.

It happened, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of Yahweh.

2 Han sendte Eliakim, som styrte husholdningen, Sebna, skriveren, og de eldste av prestene, kledd i sekkestrie, til profeten Jesaja, sønn av Amos.

He sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, to Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

3 De sa til ham: Så sier Hiskia: Denne dagen er en dag med trengsel, tukt og forakt. Barna er kommet til fødsel, men det er ingen kraft til å føde.

They said to him, Thus says Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of rejection; for the children have come to the birth, and there is no strength to bring forth.

4 Kanskje vil Herren din Gud høre ordene fra Rabshake, som hans herre, kongen av Assyria, har sendt for å håne den levende Gud, og vil refse ordene som Herren din Gud har hørt. Løft derfor din bønn for den rest som er igjen.

It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.

5 Hiskias tjenere kom til Jesaja.

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

6 Jesaja sa til dem: Dette skal dere si til deres herre: Så sier Herren: Frykt ikke for ordene du har hørt, med hvilke kongen av Assyrias tjenere har hånet meg.

Isaiah said to them, Thus shall you tell your master, Thus says Yahweh, Don't be afraid of the words that you have heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

7 Se, jeg vil legge en ånd i ham, så han vil høre et rykte og vende tilbake til sitt eget land. Jeg vil la ham falle for sverdet i sitt eget land.

Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear news, and shall return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

8 Rabshake vendte tilbake og fant at kongen av Assyria kjempet mot Libna. Han hadde nemlig hørt at han hadde brutt opp fra Lakis.

So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah; for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

9 Han fikk høre om Tirhaka, kongen av Etiopia: "Han har dratt ut for å kjempe mot deg." Da han hørte det, sendte han budbringere til Hiskia og sa:

He heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come out to fight against you. When he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

10 Dette skal dere si til Hiskia, kongen av Juda: La ikke din Gud, som du stoler på, lure deg ved å si: "Jerusalem skal ikke bli gitt i kongen av Assyrias hånd."

Thus shall you speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Don't let your God in whom you trust deceive you, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

11 Se, du har hørt hva kongene av Assyria har gjort med alle landene ved å ødelegge dem fullstendig. Skal du da bli frelst?

Behold, you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly: and shall you be delivered?

12 Har folkegudenes guder frelst dem, som mine fedre ødela, Gozan, Haran, Resef, og Edens barn i Telassar?

Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden who were in Telassar?

13 Hvor er kongen av Hamat, kongen av Arpad, kongen av byen Sefarvaim, Hena, og Iva?

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?

14 Hiskia mottok brevet fra budbringernes hånd og leste det. Hiskia gikk opp til Herrens hus og bredte det ut for Herren.

Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it; and Hezekiah went up to the house of Yahweh, and spread it before Yahweh.

15 Hiskia ba til Herren og sa:

Hezekiah prayed to Yahweh, saying,

16 Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, som troner over kjerubene, du alene er Gud over alle jordens riker. Du har skapt himmelen og jorden.

Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, who sits [above] the cherubim, you are the God, even you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.

17 Herre, vend ditt øre til og hør; åpne dine øyne, Herre, og se. Hør alle Sankeribs ord, som han har sendt for å håne den levende Gud.

Turn your ear, Yahweh, and hear; open your eyes, Yahweh, and behold; and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent to defy the living God.

18 Det er sant, Herre, at kongene av Assyria har lagt alle landene øde og deres land.

Of a truth, Yahweh, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,

19 De har kastet deres guder i ilden, for de var ikke guder, men menneskehenders verk, av tre og stein. Derfor kunne de ødelegge dem.

and have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

20 Så frels oss nå, Herre vår Gud, fra hans hånd, så alle jordens riker kan vite at du alene er Herren.

Now therefore, Yahweh our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you are Yahweh, even you only.

21 Da sendte Jesaja, Amos' sønn, bud til Hiskia og sa: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Hør, jeg har hørt den bønnen du har bedt til meg mot Sankerib, kongen av Assyria.

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying, Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Whereas you have prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria,

22 Dette er ordet som Herren har talt mot ham: Jomfru Sions datter forakter deg, hun håner deg; Jerusalems datter rister på hodet etter deg.

this is the word which Yahweh has spoken concerning him: The virgin daughter of Zion has despised you and ridiculed you; the daughter of Jerusalem has shaken her head at you.

23 Hvem har du hånet og spottet? Hvem har du hevet din røst mot og løftet øynene dine mot? Mot Israels Hellige.

Whom have you defied and blasphemed? and against whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? [even] against the Holy One of Israel.

24 Gjennom dine tjenere har du hånet Herren og sagt: Med mine mange vogner har jeg inntatt fjellenes høyde, Libanons ytterste del. Jeg vil hugge ned de høyeste sedertrærne og de beste sypressene. Jeg vil trenge inn på deres ytterste høyder, til deres fruktbare skoger.

By your servants have you defied the Lord, and have said, With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars of it, and the choice fir trees of it; and I will enter into its farthest height, the forest of its fruitful field;

25 Jeg har gravd brønner og drukket vann; med mine fotsålene vil jeg tørke ut alle Egypts elver.

I have dug and drunk water, and with the sole of my feet will I dry up all the rivers of Egypt.

26 Har du ikke hørt at jeg har gjort dette for lenge siden? Fra eldgamle dager planla jeg det, og nå har jeg ført det i verk, slik at du skulle ødelegge befestede byer til en ruinhaug.

Have you not heard how I have done it long ago, and formed it of ancient times? now have I brought it to pass, that it should be your to lay waste fortified cities into ruinous heaps.

27 Derfor var folkene av liten kraft; de ble forskrekket og forvirret. De var som gresset på marken, som det grønne gresset, som gresset på taket, felt av østvinden.

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as a field [of grain] before it is grown up.

28 Men jeg kjenner din oppreisning, din utgang og din inngang og ditt raseri mot meg.

But I know your sitting down, and your going out, and your coming in, and your raging against me.

29 På grunn av ditt raseri mot meg og din arroganse, som har nådd mine ører, vil jeg sette min krok i nesen din og mitt bit i leppene dine. Og jeg vil føre deg tilbake ad den veien du kom.

Because of your raging against me, and because your arrogance is come up into my ears, therefore will I put my hook in your nose, and my bridle in your lips, and I will turn you back by the way by which you came.

30 Dette skal være et tegn for deg: Dette år skal dere spise det som vokser av seg selv, og i det andre året det som vokser derav. Men i det tredje året skal dere så og høste, plante vingårder og ete frukten derav.

This shall be the sign to you: you shall eat this year that which grows of itself, and in the second year that which springs of the same; and in the third year sow you, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of it.

31 Den rest som unnslapp av Judas hus skal igjen slår rot nedover og bære frukt oppover.

The remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

32 Fra Jerusalem skal en rest gå ut, og fra Sions berg de som unnslipper. Herrens, hærskarenes Guds nidkjærhet, skal fullføre dette.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of Mount Zion those who shall escape. The zeal of Yahweh of Hosts will perform this.

33 Derfor sier Herren om kongen av Assyria: Han skal ikke komme inn i denne byen eller skyte en pil der, komme frem med skjold eller bygge noen voll mot den.

Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come to this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast up a mound against it.

34 Veien han kom, skal han vende tilbake, og han skal ikke komme inn i denne byen, sier Herren.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come to this city, says Yahweh.

35 For jeg vil beskytte denne byen for å frelse den, for min egen skyld og for min tjener Davids skyld.

For I will defend this city to save it, for my own sake, and for my servant David's sake.

36 Herrens engel dro ut og slo i hjel et hundre og åttifem tusen i assyrernes leir. Da folk reiste seg tidlig om morgenen, var det bare døde kropper.

The angel of Yahweh went forth, and struck in the camp of the Assyrians one hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when men arose early in the morning, behold, these were all dead bodies.

37 Så dro Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, bort, vendte tilbake og ble boende i Ninive.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and lived at Nineveh.

38 Mens han tilba i Nisroks, sin guds, hus, slo Adrammelek og Sharezer, sønnene hans, ham med sverd, og de flyktet til landet Ararat. Så ble Esar-Haddon, hans sønn, konge etter ham.

It happened, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons struck him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat. Esar Haddon his son reigned in his place.
