Shefatja, sønn av Mattan, Gedalja, sønn av Pashhur, Jukal, sønn av Sjelemja, og Pashhur, sønn av Malkia, hørte ordene som Jeremias talte til hele folket og sa:

Shephatiah the son of Mattan, and Gedaliah the son of Pashhur, and Jucal the son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur the son of Malchijah, heard the words that Jeremiah spoke to all the people, saying,

Så sier Herren: Den som blir igjen i denne byen, skal dø ved sverdet, av hungersnød og pest; men den som går over til kaldeerne, skal leve, og hans liv skal bli til bytte for ham, og han skal leve.

Thus says Yahweh, He who remains in this city shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence; but he who goes forth to the Chaldeans shall live, and his life shall be to him for a prey, and he shall live.

Så sier Herren: Denne byen skal helt sikkert bli gitt i hendene på Babylons konge, og han skal innta den.

Thus says Yahweh, This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon, and he shall take it.

Da sa fyrstene til kongen: Vi ber deg, la denne mannen bli henrettet, for han svekker kampånden hos krigerne som er igjen i denne byen, og hos hele folket, ved å tale slike ord til dem; for denne mannen søker ikke folkets beste, men deres skade.

Then the princes said to the king, Let this man, we pray you, be put to death; because he weakens the hands of the men of war who remain in this city, and the hands of all the people, in speaking such words to them: for this man doesn't seek the welfare of this people, but the hurt.

Kong Sidkia sa: Se, han er i deres hender, for kongen kan ikke gjøre noe mot dere.

Zedekiah the king said, Behold, he is in your hand; for the king is not he who can do anything against you.

Da tok de Jeremias og kastet ham i Malkias, kongens sønns, brønn, som var i vaktgården. De senket Jeremias ned med tau. I brønnen var det ikke vann, men gjørme; og Jeremias sank ned i gjørmen.

Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. In the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

Da Ebed-Melek, etioperen, en evnukk som var i kongens hus, hørte at de hadde kastet Jeremias i brønnen (kongen satt da i Benjamin-porten),

Now when Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, a eunuch, who was in the king's house, heard that they had put Jeremiah in the dungeon (the king then sitting in the gate of Benjamin),

gikk Ebed-Melek ut fra kongens hus og sa til kongen:

Ebedmelech went forth out of the king's house, and spoke to the king, saying,

Herre konge, disse mennene har gjort ondt i alt de har gjort mot profeten Jeremias, som de har kastet i brønnen. Der vil han dø av sult, for det er ikke mer brød i byen.

My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon; and he is likely to die in the place where he is, because of the famine; for there is no more bread in the city.

Da befalte kongen etioperen Ebed-Melek og sa: Ta med deg tretti menn herfra, og dra Jeremias profeten opp av brønnen før han dør.

Then the king commanded Ebedmelech the Ethiopian, saying, Take from hence thirty men with you, and take up Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon, before he die.

Så tok Ebed-Melek de mennene med seg og gikk til kongens hus, under skattekammeret, og tok gamle filler og utslitte klær og senket dem ned med tau til Jeremias i brønnen.

So Ebedmelech took the men with him, and went into the house of the king under the treasury, and took there rags and worn-out garments, and let them down by cords into the dungeon to Jeremiah.

Ebed-Melek, etioperen, sa til Jeremias: Legg nå disse fillene og utslitte klærne under armene dine, under tauene. Jeremias gjorde slik.

Ebedmelech the Ethiopian said to Jeremiah, Put now these rags and worn-out garments under your armholes under the cords. Jeremiah did so.

Så dro de Jeremias opp med tauene og tok ham opp fra brønnen. Og Jeremias ble værende i vaktgården.

So they drew up Jeremiah with the cords, and took him up out of the dungeon: and Jeremiah remained in the court of the guard.

Da sendte kong Sidkia bud etter Jeremias profeten og tok ham til den tredje inngangen i Herrens hus. Og kongen sa til Jeremias: Jeg vil spørre deg om noe; skjul ingenting for meg.

Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took Jeremiah the prophet to him into the third entry that is in the house of Yahweh: and the king said to Jeremiah, I will ask you a thing; hide nothing from me.

Da sa Jeremias til Sidkia: Hvis jeg sier det til deg, vil du ikke sikkert da drepe meg? Og hvis jeg gir deg råd, vil du ikke lytte til meg.

Then Jeremiah said to Zedekiah, If I declare it to you, will you not surely put me to death? and if I give you counsel, you will not listen to me.

Så sverget kong Sidkia i hemmelighet til Jeremias og sa: Så sant Herren lever, som har gitt oss denne sjel, jeg vil ikke drepe deg og ikke overgi deg i hendene på disse mennene som vil ta ditt liv.

So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.

Da sa Jeremias til Sidkia: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: Hvis du går over til Babylons konges fyrster, skal du leve, og denne byen skal ikke bli brent; både du og din hustru skal bli spart.

Then said Jeremiah to Zedekiah, Thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you will go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then your soul shall live, and this city shall not be burned with fire; and you shall live, and your house.

Men hvis du ikke går over til Babylons konges fyrster, skal denne byen bli gitt i hendene på kaldeerne, og de skal brenne den, og du skal ikke slippe unna deres hånd.

But if you will not go forth to the king of Babylon's princes, then shall this city be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape out of their hand.

Kong Sidkia sa til Jeremias: Jeg er redd for de jødene som har gått over til kaldeerne, for jeg frykter at de skal overgi meg i deres hender, og at de vil gjøre narr av meg.

Zedekiah the king said to Jeremiah, I am afraid of the Jews who are fallen away to the Chaldeans, lest they deliver me into their hand, and they mock me.

Men Jeremias sa: De skal ikke overgi deg. Adlyd, ber jeg deg, Herrens stemme, i det jeg taler til deg, og det skal gå deg vel, og din sjel skal leve.

But Jeremiah said, They shall not deliver you. Obey, I beg you, the voice of Yahweh, in that which I speak to you: so it shall be well with you, and your soul shall live.

Men hvis du nekter å gå over, er dette ordet som Herren har vist meg:

But if you refuse to go forth, this is the word that Yahweh has shown me:

Se, alle kvinnene som er igjen i Judas konges hus, skal bli ført til Babylons konges fyrster, og de kvinnene skal si: Dine venner har forført deg og hatt overtaket over deg; nå som føttene dine er sunket i gjørmen, vender de seg bort fra deg.

behold, all the women who are left in the king of Judah's house shall be brought forth to the king of Babylon's princes, and those women shall say, Your familiar friends have set you on, and have prevailed over you: [now that] your feet are sunk in the mire, they are turned away back.

De skal føre ut alle dine hustruer og barn til kaldeerne; du skal ikke slippe unna deres hånd, men skal bli grepet av Babylons konge, og denne byen skal du sette i brann.

They shall bring out all your wives and your children to the Chaldeans; and you shall not escape out of their hand, but shall be taken by the hand of the king of Babylon: and you shall cause this city to be burned with fire.

Da sa Sidkia til Jeremias: La ingen få vite om disse ordene, ellers vil du dø.

Then said Zedekiah to Jeremiah, Let no man know of these words, and you shall not die.

Men hvis fyrstene får høre at jeg har talt med deg, og de kommer til deg og sier: Fortell oss nå hva du har sagt til kongen; skjul det ikke for oss, så vil vi ikke drepe deg; også hva kongen sa til deg,

But if the princes hear that I have talked with you, and they come to you, and tell you, Declare to us now what you have said to the king; don't hide it from us, and we will not put you to death; also what the king said to you:

så skal du si til dem: Jeg ba kongen om ikke å sende meg tilbake til Jonatans hus for å dø der.

then you shall tell them, I presented my supplication before the king, that he would not cause me to return to Jonathan's house, to die there.

Så kom alle fyrstene til Jeremias og spurte ham; og han fortalte dem i samsvar med alt det kongen hadde befalt. Så sluttet de å snakke med ham, for saken ble ikke avslørt.

Then came all the princes to Jeremiah, and asked him; and he told them according to all these words that the king had commanded. So they left off speaking with him; for the matter was not perceived.

Så ble Jeremias værende i vaktgården til den dagen da Jerusalem ble tatt.

So Jeremiah abode in the court of the guard until the day that Jerusalem was taken.
