1 Det var en mann som var syk, Lasarus fra Betania, landsbyen til Maria og hennes søster Marta.

Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.

2 Det var den Maria som salvet Herren med salve og tørket hans føtter med sitt hår, hvis bror Lasarus var syk.

It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother, Lazarus, was sick.

3 Søstrene sendte derfor bud til ham og sa: "Herre, se, han som du elsker, er syk."

The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, "Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick."

4 Men da Jesus hørte det, sa han: "Denne sykdommen er ikke til døden, men for Guds ære, slik at Guds Sønn kan bli forherliget gjennom den."

But when Jesus heard it, he said, "This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God's Son may be glorified by it."

5 Jesus elsket Marta, hennes søster, og Lasarus.

Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6 Da han derfor hørte at han var syk, ble han to dager lenger på stedet hvor han var.

When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.

7 Etter dette sa han til disiplene: "La oss dra til Judea igjen."

Then after this he said to the disciples, "Let's go into Judea again."

8 Disiplene sa til ham: "Rabbi, jødene prøvde nettopp å steine deg, og går du dit igjen?"

The disciples told him, "Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you, and are you going there again?"

9 Jesus svarte: "Er det ikke tolv timer med dagslys? Hvis en mann vandrer om dagen, snubler han ikke, fordi han ser verdens lys.

Jesus answered, "Aren't there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn't stumble, because he sees the light of this world.

10 Men hvis en mann vandrer om natten, snubler han, fordi lyset ikke er i ham."

But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn't in him."

11 Han sa dette, og etterpå sa han til dem: "Vår venn Lasarus har sovnet, men jeg drar for å vekke ham opp."

He said these things, and after that, he said to them, "Our friend, Lazarus, has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep."

12 Disiplene sa da: "Herre, hvis han har sovnet, blir han frisk igjen."

The disciples therefore said, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover."

13 Jesus hadde talt om hans død, men de trodde at han snakket om å hvile i søvn.

Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.

14 Så Jesus sa det rett ut til dem: "Lasarus er død.

So Jesus said to them plainly then, "Lazarus is dead.

15 Og jeg er glad for deres skyld at jeg ikke var der, slik at dere kan tro. Men la oss gå til ham."

I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let's go to him."

16 Thomas, som kalles Didymus (som betyr "tvilling"), sa da til sine meddisipler: "La oss også gå, slik at vi kan dø med ham."

Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus,{"Didymus" means "Twin"} said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go also, that we may die with him."

17 Da Jesus kom frem, fant han at han hadde ligget i graven i fire dager allerede.

So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.

18 Betania var nær Jerusalem, omtrent femten stadier unna.

Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia{15 stadia is about 2.8 kilometers or 1.7 miles} away.

19 Mange av jødene hadde kommet til Marta og Maria for å trøste dem angående deres bror.

Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.

20 Da Marta hørte at Jesus kom, gikk hun for å møte ham, men Maria ble værende i huset.

Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.

21 Marta sa da til Jesus: "Herre, hvis du hadde vært her, ville ikke min bror ha dødd.

Therefore Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died.

22 Men også nå vet jeg at hva du ber Gud om, vil Gud gi deg."

Even now I know that, whatever you ask of God, God will give you."

23 Jesus sa til henne: "Din bror skal stå opp igjen."

Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again."

24 Marta sa til ham: "Jeg vet at han skal stå opp i oppstandelsen på den siste dag."

Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day."

25 Jesus sa til henne: "Jeg er oppstandelsen og livet. Den som tror på meg, skal leve, selv om han dør.

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, though he die, yet will he live.

26 Og hver den som lever og tror på meg, skal aldri i evighet dø. Tror du dette?"

Whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"

27 Hun sa til ham: "Ja, Herre, jeg har trodd at du er Kristus, Guds Sønn, han som kommer til verden."

She said to him, "Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God's Son, he who comes into the world."

28 Da hun hadde sagt dette, gikk hun bort og kalte hemmelig på Maria, sin søster, og sa: "Læreren er her, og han kaller på deg."

When she had said this, she went away, and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, "The Teacher is here, and is calling you."

29 Da hun hørte det, sto hun raskt opp og gikk til ham.

When she heard this, she arose quickly, and went to him.

30 Jesus hadde ennå ikke kommet inn i landsbyen, men var på stedet hvor Marta hadde møtt ham.

Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.

31 Da jødene som var med henne i huset og trøstet henne så at Maria reiste seg raskt og gikk ut, fulgte de etter henne og sa: "Hun går til graven for å gråte der."

Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, "She is going to the tomb to weep there."

32 Da Maria kom til stedet hvor Jesus var og så ham, falt hun ned for hans føtter og sa til ham: "Herre, hvis du hadde vært her, ville ikke min bror ha dødd."

Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn't have died."

33 Da Jesus så henne gråte og jødene som kom med henne gråte, ble han dypt beveget i ånden og ble urolig,

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled,

34 og han sa: "Hvor har dere lagt ham?" De sa til ham: "Herre, kom og se."

and said, "Where have you laid him?" They told him, "Lord, come and see."

35 Jesus gråt.

Jesus wept.

36 Jødene sa da: "Se hvor høyt han elsket ham!"

The Jews therefore said, "See how much affection he had for him!"

37 Men noen av dem sa: "Kunne ikke denne mannen, som åpnet øynene på den blinde, også ha hindret denne mannen fra å dø?"

Some of them said, "Couldn't this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?"

38 Jesus, igjen dypt beveget i seg selv, kom til graven. Det var en hule, og en stein lå over den.

Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.

39 Jesus sa: "Ta bort steinen." Marta, den dødes søster, sa til ham: "Herre, det lukter allerede, for han har vært død i fire dager."

Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, "Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days."

40 Jesus sa til henne: "Sa jeg ikke til deg at hvis du tror, skal du se Guds herlighet?"

Jesus said to her, "Didn't I tell you that if you believed, you would see God's glory?"

41 De tok da bort steinen fra stedet hvor den døde lå. Jesus løftet øynene og sa: "Far, jeg takker deg fordi du har hørt meg.

So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, "Father, I thank you that you listened to me.

42 Jeg vet at du alltid hører meg, men på grunn av folkemengden som står rundt, har jeg sagt dette, så de kan tro at du har sendt meg."

I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude that stands around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me."

43 Da han hadde sagt dette, ropte han med høy røst: "Lasarus, kom ut!"

When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Lazarus, come out!"

44 Den døde kom ut, bundet på hender og føtter med linremser, og hans ansikt var innhyllet i et klede. Jesus sa til dem: "Løs ham og la ham gå."

He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Free him, and let him go."

45 Mange av jødene som kom til Maria og så hva Jesus hadde gjort, trodde på ham.

Therefore many of the Jews, who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did, believed in him.

46 Men noen av dem gikk til fariseerne og fortalte dem hva Jesus hadde gjort.

But some of them went away to the Pharisees, and told them the things which Jesus had done.

47 Da samlet overprestene og fariseerne et råd og sa: "Hva skal vi gjøre? For denne mannen gjør mange tegn.

The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, "What are we doing? For this man does many signs.

48 Hvis vi lar ham være, vil alle tro på ham, og romerne kommer og tar både vårt sted og vårt folk."

If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation."

49 Men en av dem, Kaifas, som var yppersteprest det året, sa til dem: "Dere vet ingen ting,

But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, "You know nothing at all,

50 og dere tenker ikke på at det er bedre for oss at ett menneske dør for folket, enn at hele nasjonen går til grunne."

nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish."

51 Dette sa han ikke av seg selv, men fordi han var yppersteprest det året, profeterte han at Jesus skulle dø for nasjonen,

Now he didn't say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,

52 og ikke bare for nasjonen, men også for å samle Guds spredte barn til ett.

and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.

53 Fra den dagen planla de derfor å drepe ham.

So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.

54 Jesus gikk derfor ikke mer åpent blant jødene, men dro derfra til en by nær ørkenen, som heter Efraim, og der ble han med disiplene sine.

Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.

55 Jødenes påske nærmet seg, og mange dro opp fra landet til Jerusalem før påsken for å rense seg.

Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.

56 De lette etter Jesus og talte med hverandre mens de sto i tempelet: "Hva tror dere? Kommer han ikke til høytiden?"

Then they sought for Jesus and spoke one with another, as they stood in the temple, "What do you think--that he isn't coming to the feast at all?"

57 Overprestene og fariseerne hadde gitt beskjed om at hvis noen visste hvor han var, skulle de melde fra, slik at de kunne arrestere ham.

Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
