1 Herren talte til Josva og sa:

Yahweh spoke to Joshua, saying,

2 Tal til Israels barn og si: Utskil for dere tilfluktsbyene, som jeg talte til dere om gjennom Moses,

Speak to the children of Israel, saying, Assign you the cities of refuge, of which I spoke to you by Moses,

3 slik at drapsmannen som dreper noen uforvarende og uten å vite om det, kan flykte dit. De skal være en tilflukt for dere fra blodhevneren.

that the manslayer who kills any person unwittingly [and] unawares may flee there: and they shall be to you for a refuge from the avenger of blood.

4 Han skal flykte til en av disse byene og stå ved byens port og legge fram sin sak for de eldste i denne byen. De skal ta ham inn i byen til seg og gi ham et sted hvor han kan bo blant dem.

He shall flee to one of those cities, and shall stand at the entrance of the gate of the city, and declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city; and they shall take him into the city to them, and give him a place, that he may dwell among them.

5 Hvis blodhevneren forfølger ham, skal de ikke overgi drapsmannen til hans hånd, siden han slo ned sin nabo uforvarende og ikke hatet ham på forhånd.

If the avenger of blood pursue after him, then they shall not deliver up the manslayer into his hand; because he struck his neighbor unawares, and didn't hate him before.

6 Han skal bo i den byen til han står for menigheten til dom, og fram til den gang da den øverste presten, som er i de dager, dør. Da kan drapsmannen vende tilbake til sin egen by og sitt eget hus, til den byen han flyktet fra.

He shall dwell in that city, until he stand before the congregation for judgment, until the death of the high priest that shall be in those days: then shall the manslayer return, and come to his own city, and to his own house, to the city from whence he fled.

7 De skilte ut Kedesh i Galilea, i Naftalis fjellområde, og Sikem i Efraims fjellområde, og Kirjat-Arba (det samme er Hebron) i Juda-fjellområdet.

They set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill-country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill-country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (the same is Hebron) in the hill-country of Judah.

8 På østsiden av Jordan, ved Jeriko, utpekte de Bezer i ørkenen på sletten fra Rubens stamme, og Ramot i Gilead fra Gads stamme, og Golan i Basan fra Manasses stamme.

Beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, they assigned Bezer in the wilderness in the plain out of the tribe of Reuben, and Ramoth in Gilead out of the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan out of the tribe of Manasseh.

9 Disse var de utpekte byene for alle Israels barn og for den fremmede som bor blant dem, slik at den som dreper noen uforvarende kan flykte dit, og ikke dø for blodhevnerens hånd før han står for menigheten.

These were the appointed cities for all the children of Israel, and for the stranger who sojourns among them, that whoever kills any person unwittingly might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stood before the congregation.
