1 På den tjuefjerde dagen i denne måneden samlet Israels barn seg med faste, iført sekkestrie og jord på seg.

Now in the twenty-fourth day of this month the children of Israel were assembled with fasting, and with sackcloth, and earth on them.

2 Isrels etterkommere skilte seg fra alle fremmede og sto og bekjente sine synder og fedrenes misgjerninger.

The seed of Israel separated themselves from all foreigners, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers.

3 De sto oppreist der de var, og leste fra boken med Herrens, deres Guds, lov en fjerdedel av dagen; og en annen fjerdedel bekjente de og tilba Herren sin Gud.

They stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of Yahweh their God a fourth part of the day; and [another] fourth part they confessed, and worshiped Yahweh their God.

4 Så sto Jesjua, Bani, Kadmiel, Sjevanja, Bunni, Sjeriba, Bani og Kenani på levittenes trapp og ropte med høy røst til Herren sin Gud.

Then stood up on the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God.

5 Levittene, Jesjua, Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneja, Sjeriba, Hodija, Sjevanja og Petahja, sa: 'Reis dere og lovpris Herren deres Gud fra evighet til evighet! Lovet være ditt herlige navn, som er opphøyd over all lovprisning og lovsang.

Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabneiah, Sherebiah, Hodiah, Shebaniah, [and] Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless Yahweh your God from everlasting to everlasting; and blessed be your glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.

6 Du alene er Herren. Du har skapt himmelen, himlenes himmel med hele deres hær, jorden og alt som er på den, havene og alt som er i dem, og du bevarer dem alle. Himmelhæren tilber deg.

You are Yahweh, even you alone; you have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all things that are thereon, the seas and all that is in them, and you preserve them all; and the host of heaven worships you.

7 Du er Herren Gud, som utvalgte Abram, førte ham ut fra Ur i Kaldea og ga ham navnet Abraham.

You are Yahweh the God, who did choose Abram, and brought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave him the name of Abraham,

8 Du fant hans hjerte trofast mot deg og inngikk en pakt med ham om å gi landet til kanaaneerne, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, jebusittene og girgasittene til hans etterkommere. Du har oppfylt dine ord, for du er rettferdig.

and found his heart faithful before you, and made a covenant with him to give the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Jebusite, and the Girgashite, to give it to his seed, and have performed your words; for you are righteous.

9 Du så våre fedres lidelse i Egypt, og hørte deres rop ved Rødehavet.

You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and heard their cry by the Red Sea,

10 Du gjorde tegn og under mot farao og alle hans tjenere og folket i hans land, for du visste at de handlet hovmodig mot dem. Og du skapte deg et navn som varer til denne dag.

and shown signs and wonders on Pharaoh, and on all his servants, and on all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and did get you a name, as it is this day.

11 Du delte havet foran dem, så de kunne gå tørrskodd gjennom det; men de som forfulgte dem, kastet du i dypet som en stein i de mektige vannmassene.

You divided the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their pursuers you did cast into the depths, as a stone into the mighty waters.

12 Du ledet dem med en skystøtte om dagen og med en ildstøtte om natten, for å gi dem lys på veien de skulle gå.

Moreover in a pillar of cloud you led them by day; and in a pillar of fire by night, to give them light in the way in which they should go.

13 Du steg ned på Sinai-fjellet, talte med dem fra himmelen og ga dem rette lover og sanne bud, gode forskrifter og påbud.

You came down also on Mount Sinai, and spoke with them from heaven, and gave them right ordinances and true laws, good statutes and commandments,

14 Du gjorde sabbaten kjent for dem og påla dem bud, forskrifter og en lov ved Moses, din tjener.

and made known to them your holy Sabbath, and commanded them commandments, and statutes, and a law, by Moses your servant,

15 Du ga dem brød fra himmelen for deres sult, og vann av fjellet for deres tørst, og påla dem å gå inn og ta landet som du med ed hadde lovet å gi dem.

and gave them bread from the sky for their hunger, and brought forth water for them out of the rock for their thirst, and commanded those who they should go in to possess the land which you had sworn to give them.

16 Men våre fedre handlet hovmodig, gjorde nakken stiv og hørte ikke på dine bud.

But they and our fathers dealt proudly and hardened their neck, and didn't listen to your commandments,

17 De nektet å adlyde, og glemte de undere du gjorde blant dem. I sin trass valgte de en leder for å vende tilbake til slaveriet. Men du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud, sen til vrede og rik på kjærlighet; du forlot dem ikke.

and refused to obey, neither were mindful of your wonders that you did among them, but hardened their neck, and in their rebellion appointed a captain to return to their bondage. But you are a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, and didn't forsake them.

18 Selv da de hadde laget seg en støpt kalv og sa: 'Dette er din gud som førte deg ut av Egypt,' og gjorde forferdelige blasfemier.

Yes, when they had made them a molten calf, and said, This is your God who brought you up out of Egypt, and had committed awful blasphemies;

19 Likevel i din store barmhjertighet forlot du dem ikke i ørkenen. Skystøtten vegret seg ikke å lede dem om dagen, ei heller ildstøtten om natten, for å lyse opp veien de skulle gå.

yet you in your manifold mercies didn't forsake them in the wilderness: the pillar of cloud didn't depart from over them by day, to lead them in the way; neither the pillar of fire by night, to show them light, and the way in which they should go.

20 Du ga dem din gode Ånd for å lære dem, og du holdt ikke din manna tilbake fra deres munn og ga dem vann for deres tørst.

You gave also your good Spirit to instruct them, and didn't withhold your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst.

21 I førti år forsynte du dem i ørkenen, og de manglet ikke noe; klærne deres ble ikke utslitt, og føttene deres hovnet ikke opp.

Yes, forty years did you sustain them in the wilderness, [and] they lacked nothing; their clothes didn't grow old, and their feet didn't swell.

22 Du ga dem også riker og folk som du fordelte etter avgrensninger. Så de tok i eie landet Sihon, kongen av Hesjbon, og landet til Og, kongen av Basan.

Moreover you gave them kingdoms and peoples, which you did allot after their portions: so they possessed the land of Sihon, even the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

23 Du gjorde deres etterkommere tallrike som himmelens stjerner, og førte dem inn i landet som du hadde lovet deres fedre at de skulle gå inn og ta i eie.

Their children also multiplied you as the stars of the sky, and brought them into the land concerning which you did say to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.

24 Barna gikk inn og tok landet i eie, og du underla dem landets innbyggere, kanaaneerne, og ga dem i deres hender med deres konger og folkene i landet, for at de kunne gjøre med dem som de ønsket.

So the children went in and possessed the land, and you subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gave them into their hands, with their kings, and the peoples of the land, that they might do with them as they would.

25 De tok befestede byer og et fruktbart land, og inntok hus fylt med alle gode ting, uthugde sisterner, vingårder, olivenlunder og frukttrær i overflod. Så spiste de, ble mette og fetet seg, og frydet seg i din store godhet.

They took fortified cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all good things, cisterns hewn out, vineyards, and olive groves, and fruit trees in abundance: so they ate, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

26 Men de var ulydige og gjorde opprør mot deg, kastet din lov bak ryggen og drepte dine profeter som vitnet mot dem for å vende dem tilbake til deg, og de gjorde forferdelige blasfemier.

Nevertheless they were disobedient, and rebelled against you, and cast your law behind their back, and killed your prophets that testified against them to turn them again to you, and they committed awful blasphemies.

27 Derfor overlot du dem i hendene til deres fiender, som undertrykte dem. Men i sin trengsel ropte de til deg, og du hørte fra himmelen. I din store barmhjertighet ga du dem frelsere som frelste dem fra deres fienders hånd.

Therefore you delivered them into the hand of their adversaries, who distressed them: and in the time of their trouble, when they cried to you, you heard from heaven; and according to your manifold mercies you gave them saviors who saved them out of the hand of their adversaries.

28 Men når de fikk hvile, gjorde de igjen ondt foran deg, og du overlot dem i deres fienders hånd, slik at de fikk makt over dem. Men når de vendte om og ropte til deg, hørte du dem fra himmelen, og mange ganger befridde du dem etter din barmhjertighet.

But after they had rest, they did evil again before you; therefore left you them in the hand of their enemies, so that they had the dominion over them: yet when they returned, and cried to you, you heard from heaven; and many times did you deliver them according to your mercies,

29 Du vitnet mot dem for å bringe dem tilbake til din lov. Men de handlet hovmodig og hørte ikke på dine bud, men syndet mot dine forskrifter - de forskrifter som gir liv til de som følger dem. De dro skuldrene sine bort og gjorde nakken stiv og ville ikke høre.

and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they dealt proudly, and didn't listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances, (which if a man do, he shall live in them), and withdrew the shoulder, and hardened their neck, and would not hear.

30 I mange år bar du over med dem og vitnet mot dem ved din Ånd gjennom dine profeter, men de ville ikke lytte. Derfor overlot du dem i hendene til landenes folk.

Yet many years did you bear with them, and testified against them by your Spirit through your prophets: yet would they not give ear: therefore gave you them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

31 Likevel, i din store barmhjertighet gjorde du ikke ende på dem helt, og du forlot dem ikke, for du er en nådig og barmhjertig Gud.

Nevertheless in your manifold mercies you did not make a full end of them, nor forsake them; for you are a gracious and merciful God.

32 Nå altså, vår Gud, den store, den mektige og den forferdelige Gud, som holder pakten og viser kjærlighet: Ikke la all den nød som har rammet oss, våre konger, våre fyrster, våre prester, våre profeter, våre fedre og hele ditt folk, siden assyrerkongene fram til denne dag, synes liten for deg.

Now therefore, our God, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who keep covenant and loving kindness, don't let all the travail seem little before you, that has come on us, on our kings, on our princes, and on our priests, and on our prophets, and on our fathers, and on all your people, since the time of the kings of Assyria to this day.

33 Du er rettferdig i alt som har kommet over oss, for du har handlet trofast, men vi har gjort ondt.

However you are just in all that is come on us; for you have dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;

34 Verken våre konger, våre fyrster, våre prester eller våre fedre har holdt din lov eller hørt på dine bud og vitnesbyrd, som du vitnet mot dem.

neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept your law, nor listened to your commandments and your testimonies with which you did testify against them.

35 De har ikke tjent deg i sitt kongedømme, eller i din store godhet som du ga dem, eller i det store og fruktbare landet som du satte foran dem, og de vendte ikke om fra sine onde gjerninger.

For they have not served you in their kingdom, and in your great goodness that you gave them, and in the large and fat land which you gave before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

36 Se, i dag er vi slaver, og i det landet som du ga til våre fedre for at de skulle nyte dets frukt og gode, se, vi er slaver i det.

Behold, we are servants this day, and as for the land that you gave to our fathers to eat the fruit of it and the good of it, behold, we are servants in it.

37 Det gir økt avkastning til kongene som du har satt over oss på grunn av våre synder. De har også makt over våre kropper og vår buskap, slik de ønsker, og vi er i stor nød.

It yields much increase to the kings whom you have set over us because of our sins: also they have power over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

38 Likevel, for alt dette slutter vi en sikker pakt og skriver den ned, og våre fyrster, levitter og prester setter sitt segl på den.

Yet for all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, our Levites, [and] our priests, seal to it.
