1 Israels barn, hele menigheten, kom til ørkenen Zin i den første måneden. Folket oppholdt seg i Kadesh, der Miriam døde og ble begravet.

The children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2 Det var ikke vann til menigheten, så de samlet seg mot Moses og Aron.

There was no water for the congregation: and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

3 Folket kivet med Moses og sa: «Å, om vi bare hadde dødd da våre brødre døde for Herrens åsyn!

The people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying, Would that we had died when our brothers died before Yahweh!

4 Hvorfor har dere ført Herrens menighet til denne ørkenen for at vi og våre dyr skal dø her?

Why have you brought the assembly of Yahweh into this wilderness, that we should die there, we and our animals?

5 Hvorfor har du ført oss opp fra Egypt for å bringe oss til dette onde stedet? Det er ikke et sted for såkorn, fiken, vinranker eller granatepler, og det er ikke noe vann å drikke.»

Why have you made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in to this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink.

6 Moses og Aron gikk fra menighetens samling til inngangen til åpenbaringsteltet og falt på ansiktet, og Herrens herlighet viste seg for dem.

Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the door of the tent of meeting, and fell on their faces: and the glory of Yahweh appeared to them.

7 Herren talte til Moses og sa:

Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

8 «Ta staven, samle menigheten, du og Aron din bror, og tal til klippen foran deres øyne så den skal gi fra seg vann. Slik skal du føre vann ut av klippen til dem, og menigheten og buskapen skal få drikke.»

Take the rod, and assemble the congregation, you, and Aaron your brother, and speak you to the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and you shall bring forth to them water out of the rock; so you shall give the congregation and their cattle drink.

9 Moses tok staven fra Herrens åsyn, som han hadde befalt ham.

Moses took the rod from before Yahweh, as he commanded him.

10 Moses og Aron samlet forsamlingen foran klippen, og han sa til dem: «Hør nå, dere opprørere! Skal vi få vann ut av denne klippen til dere?»

Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, Hear now, you rebels; shall we bring you forth water out of this rock?

11 Moses løftet hånden og slo klippen med staven to ganger, og vann strømmet ut rikelig. Menigheten og buskapen drakk.

Moses lifted up his hand, and struck the rock with his rod twice: and water came forth abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their cattle.

12 Herren sa til Moses og Aron: «Fordi dere ikke trodde på meg og ikke helliget meg for Israels barn, skal dere ikke føre denne menigheten inn i det landet jeg har gitt dem.»

Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron, Because you didn't believe in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

13 Dette er Meribas vann, fordi Israels barn kivet med Herren, og han ble helliget blant dem.

These are the waters of Meribah; because the children of Israel strove with Yahweh, and he was sanctified in them.

14 Moses sendte bud fra Kadesh til kongen av Edom: «Så sier din bror Israel: Du vet alt det strevet vi har gjennomgått:

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, Thus says your brother Israel, You know all the travail that has happened to us:

15 hvordan våre fedre dro ned til Egypt, hvor vi bodde lenge. Egypterne mishandlet oss og våre fedre:

how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our fathers:

16 Vi ropte til Herren, og han hørte vår stemme, sendte en engel og førte oss ut av Egypt. Nå er vi her i Kadesh, en by ved din grenseland.

and when we cried to Yahweh, he heard our voice, and sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt: and, behold, we are in Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of your border.

17 La oss få dra gjennom ditt land! Vi vil ikke gå gjennom åker eller vingård, og vi vil ikke drikke vannet fra brønnene. Vi vil følge kongeveien; vi vil ikke vike av til høyre eller venstre før vi har passert din grense.»

Please let us pass through your land: we will not pass through field or through vineyard, neither will we drink of the water of the wells: we will go along the king's highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we have passed your border.

18 Edom svarte: «Du får ikke dra gjennom, ellers kommer jeg ut med sverd mot deg.»

Edom said to him, You shall not pass through me, lest I come out with the sword against you.

19 Israels barn sa til ham: «Vi skal gå på hovedveien, og hvis vi drikker av ditt vann, både vi og vår buskap, betaler vi for det. Bare la oss få gå gjennom til fots.»

The children of Israel said to him, We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of your water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price of it: let me only, without [doing] anything [else], pass through on my feet.

20 Han sa: «Du får ikke dra gjennom.» Edom kom ut mot dem med mye folk og med sterk hånd.

He said, You shall not pass through. Edom came out against him with much people, and with a strong hand.

21 Slik nektet Edom Israel å dra gjennom sitt område, og Israel vendte seg fra ham.

Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border: why Israel turned away from him.

22 De dro fra Kadesh, og Israels barn, hele menigheten, kom til fjellet Hor.

They traveled from Kadesh: and the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, came to Mount Hor.

23 Herren talte til Moses og Aron ved fjellet Hor i grensen til Edoms land og sa:

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in Mount Hor, by the border of the land of Edom, saying,

24 «Aron skal samles til sine fedre, for han skal ikke komme inn i det landet jeg har gitt Israels barn, fordi dere var gjenstridige ved Meribas vann.

Aaron shall be gathered to his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given to the children of Israel, because you rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

25 Ta Aron og Eleazar hans sønn, og før dem opp på fjellet Hor.

Take Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up to Mount Hor;

26 Ta av Aron klærne og kle Eleazar hans sønn med dem; Aron skal samles til sine fedre og dø der.»

and strip Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son: and Aaron shall be gathered [to his people], and shall die there.

27 Moses gjorde som Herren befalte, og de gikk opp på fjellet Hor i hele menighetens påsyn.

Moses did as Yahweh commanded: and they went up into Mount Hor in the sight of all the congregation.

28 Moses tok av Aron klærne og kledde Eleazar hans sønn med dem. Og Aron døde der på toppen av fjellet. Så kom Moses og Eleazar ned fra fjellet.

Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put them on Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there on the top of the mountain: and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.

29 Da hele menigheten så at Aron var død, gråt de over Aron i tretti dager, hele Israels hus.

When all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead, they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
