1 Og Abia ble lagt til hvile hos sine fedre, og de begravet ham i Davids by. Hans sønn Asa ble konge etter ham. I hans dager var landet i fred i ti år.

And Abijah lieth with his fathers, and they bury him in the city of David, and reign doth Asa his son in his stead: in his days was the land quiet ten years.

2 Asa gjorde det som var godt og rett i Herrens, hans Guds, øyne.

And Asa doth that which is good, and that which is right, in the eyes of Jehovah his God,

3 Han fjernet de fremmede altrene og offerhaugene, knuste minnesmerkene og hogg ned avgudsstøttene.

and turneth aside the altars of the stranger, and the high places, and breaketh the standing-pillars, and cutteth down the shrines,

4 Han sa til Juda at de skulle søke Herren, sine fedres Gud, og følge loven og budene.

and saith to Judah to seek Jehovah, God of their fathers, and to do the law and the command;

5 Han fjernet både offerhauger og avgudsbilder fra alle byene i Juda, og riket var i fred under hans styre.

and he turneth aside out of all cities of Judah the high places and the images, and the kingdom is quiet before him.

6 Han bygde befestede byer i Juda, for landet hadde fred, og ingen krig var mot ham i disse årene, siden Herren hadde gitt ham ro.

And he buildeth cities of bulwarks in Judah, for the land hath quiet, and there is no war with him in these years, because Jehovah hath given rest to him.

7 Han sa til Juda: 'La oss bygge disse byene og omgi dem med murer, tårn, porter og bommer, mens landet er trygt omkring oss. Vi har søkt Herren vår Gud, og Han har gitt oss ro på alle kanter.' Og de bygde, og det gikk dem vel.

And he saith to Judah, `Let us build these cities, and compass `them' with wall, and towers, two-leaved doors, and bars, while the land `is' before us, because we have sought Jehovah our God, we have sought, and He giveth rest to us round about;' and they build and prosper.

8 Asa hadde en hærstyrke som bar skjold og spyd: fra Juda tre hundre tusen, og fra Benjamin, bevæpnet med skjold og bue, to hundre og åtti tusen. Alle disse var dyktige krigere.

And there is to Asa a force bearing target and spear, out of Judah three hundred thousand, and out of Benjamin, bearing shield and treading bow, two hundred and eighty thousand: all these `are' mighty of valour.

9 Så kom sushiten Serah mot dem med en hær på en million mann og tre hundre vogner, og han kom til Maresja.

And come out unto them doth Zerah the Cushite with a force of a thousand thousand, and chariots three hundred, and he cometh in unto Mareshah,

10 Da dro Asa ut mot ham, og de stilte seg i kampformasjon i dalen Sefata ved Maresja.

and Asa goeth out before him, and they set battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

11 Asa ropte til Herren sin Gud og sa: 'Herre, det er ikke vanskelig for deg å hjelpe enten mot de sterke eller de maktesløse. Hjelp oss, Herre vår Gud, for vi stoler på deg, og i ditt navn har vi gått i møte med denne store hær. Herre, du er vår Gud; la ikke mennesker vinne over deg!'

And Asa calleth unto Jehovah his God, and saith, `Jehovah! it is nothing with Thee to help, between the mighty and those who have no power; help us, O Jehovah, our God, for on Thee we have leant, and in Thy name we have come against this multitude; O Jehovah, our God thou `art'; let him not prevail with Thee -- mortal man!

12 Herren slo kushittene foran Asa og Juda, og kushittene flyktet.

And Jehovah smiteth the Cushim before Asa, and before Judah, and the Cushim flee,

13 Asa og hans menn forfulgte dem til Gerar, og mange av kushittene falt, for de kunne ikke holde stand, siden de ble knust for Herrens og hans leirs ansikt. Og de tok en meget stor mengde bytte.

and Asa and the people who `are' with him pursue them even to Gerar, and there fall of the Cushim, for they have no preserving, because they have been broken before Jehovah, and before His camp; and they bear away very much spoil,

14 De slo også alle byene rundt Gerar, for frykten for Herren kom over dem, og de plyndret byene, for de hadde mye bytte.

and smite all the cities round about Gerar, for a fear of Jehovah hath been upon them, and they spoil all the cities, for abundant spoil hath been in them;

15 De slo også ned teltbyene med husdyr og tok mange sauer og kameler, og vendte deretter tilbake til Jerusalem.

and also tents of cattle they have smitten, and they capture sheep in abundance, and camels, and turn back to Jerusalem.
