1 Dette er ordene i brevet som profeten Jeremia sendte fra Jerusalem til restene av de eldste blant fangene, til prestene, profetene og hele folket som Nebukadnesar hadde ført bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

And these `are' words of the letter that Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem unto the remnant of the elders of the removal, and unto the priests, and unto the prophets, and unto all the people -- whom Nebuchadnezzar removed from Jerusalem to Babylon,

2 Etter at Jekonja, kongen, dronningen, embetsmennene, lederne i Juda og Jerusalem, håndverkerne og smedene hadde dratt fra Jerusalem,

After the going forth of Jeconiah the king, and the mistress, and the officers, heads of Judah and Jerusalem, and the artificer, and the smith, from Jerusalem --

3 ved Eleasa, sønn av Sjafan, og Gemarja, sønn av Hilkia, som Sidkia, kongen av Juda, hadde sendt til Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, til Babylon, stod det:

By the hand of Eleasah son of Shaphan, and Gemariah son of Hilkijah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent unto Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon -- to Babylon, saying,

4 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, til alle de bortførte som jeg førte bort fra Jerusalem til Babylon:

`Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, to all the removal that I removed from Jerusalem to Babylon,

5 Bygg hus og bo i dem, plant hager og spis deres frukt.

Build ye houses, and abide; and plant ye gardens, and eat their fruit;

6 Ta dere hustruer og få sønner og døtre; ta hustruer til deres sønner og gi deres døtre til menn, så de kan få sønner og døtre. Øk i antall der og bli ikke få.

Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take for your sons wives, and your daughters give to husbands, and they bear sons and daughters; and multiply there, and ye are not few;

7 Søk fred for byen som jeg har ført dere til, og be til Herren for den, for når den har fred, har dere fred.

And seek the peace of the city whither I have removed you, and pray for it unto Jehovah, for in its peace ye have peace.

8 For så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud: La ikke deres profeter som er blant dere, eller deres spåmenn, lure dere, og lytt ikke til deres drømmer, som dere får dem til å drømme.

`For thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, Let not your prophets who `are' in your midst, and your diviners, lift you up, nor hearken ye unto their dreams, thay ye are causing `them' to dream;

9 For de profeterer falskt for dere i mitt navn; jeg har ikke sendt dem, sier Herren.

For with falsehood they are prophesying to you in My name; I have not sent them, an affirmation of Jehovah.

10 For så sier Herren: Når sytti år for Babylon er fullført, vil jeg se til dere, og jeg vil oppfylle mine løfter til dere ved å føre dere tilbake til dette stedet.

`For thus said Jehovah, Surely at the fulness of Babylon -- seventy years -- I inspect you, and have established towards you My good word, to bring you back unto this place.

11 For jeg vet hvilke tanker jeg har med dere, sier Herren, tanker om fred og ikke ulykkes, for å gi dere framtid og håp.

For I have known the thoughts that I am thinking towards you -- an affirmation of Jehovah; thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give to you posterity and hope.

12 Dere skal påkalle meg og komme og be til meg, og jeg vil høre på dere.

`And ye have called Me, and have gone, and have prayed unto Me, and I have hearkened unto you,

13 Dere skal søke meg, og dere skal finne meg når dere søker meg av hele hjertet.

And ye have sought Me, and have found, for ye seek Me with all your heart;

14 Jeg vil la meg finne av dere, sier Herren, og jeg vil føre dere hjem fra fangenskapet, og samle dere fra alle nasjoner og fra alle steder hvor jeg har spredt dere, sier Herren, og bringe dere tilbake til stedet jeg førte dere bort fra.

And I have been found of you -- an affirmation of Jehovah; and I have turned back `to' your captivity, and have gathered you out of all the nations, and out of all the places whither I have driven you -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and I have brought you back unto the place whence I removed you.

15 For dere har sagt: Herren har reist opp profeter for oss i Babylon,

`Because ye have said, Jehovah hath raised up to us prophets in Babylon,

16 så sier Herren angående kongen som sitter på Davids trone og alle folket som bor i denne byen, deres brødre som ikke ble ført i fangenskap med dere,

Surely thus said Jehovah concerning the king who is sitting on the throne of David, and concerning all the people that is dwelling in this city, your brethren who went not forth with you in the removal;

17 så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Se, jeg sender sverdet, hungersnøden og pesten mot dem, og jeg vil gjøre dem som dårlige fikener som ikke kan spises på grunn av sin dårlighet.

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, Lo, I am sending among them the sword, the famine, and the pestilence, and I have given them up as figs that `are' vile, that are not eaten for badness.

18 Og jeg vil forfølge dem med sverd, hungersnød og pest, og jeg vil gjøre dem til en redsel for alle jordens riker, til en forbannelse og en forferdelse, til en hvesing og til hån blant alle nasjoner som jeg har drevet dem bort til,

And I have pursued after them with sword, with famine, and with pestilence, and have given them for a trembling to all kingdoms of the earth, for a curse and for an astonishment, and for a hissing, and for a reproach among all the nations whither I have driven them,

19 fordi de ikke har lyttet til mine ord, sier Herren, som jeg sendte til dem ved mine tjenere, profetene, tidlig og uten opphold, men dere har ikke lyttet, sier Herren.

Because that they have not hearkened unto My words -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- that I sent unto them by My servants the prophets, rising early and sending, and ye hearkened not -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

20 Men hør Herrens ord, alle dere fangne som jeg har sendt fra Jerusalem til Babylon.

`And ye, hear ye a word of Jehovah, all ye of the captivity that I have sent from Jerusalem to Babylon,

21 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, angående Akab, Kolajas sønn, og Sidemaja, Maasejas sønn, som profeterer løgn for dere i mitt navn: Se, jeg vil gi dem i Nebukadnesars hånd, kongen av Babylon, og han vil slå dem ihjel for deres øyne.

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, concerning Ahab son of Kolaiah, and concerning Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying to you in My name falsehood: Lo, I am giving them into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon, and he hath smitten them before your eyes,

22 Og fra dem vil det bli en forbannelse blant alle Judas fangne som er i Babylon, og man vil si: Herren gjør deg som Sedekia og Akab, som kongen av Babylon stekte i ild.

And taken from them hath been a reviling by all the removed of Judah that `are' in Babylon, saying, Jehovah doth set thee as Zedekiah, and as Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted with fire;

23 For de har gjort det som er en skam i Israel, og de har begått ekteskapsbrudd med sine naboers koner, og har talt løgn i mitt navn, som jeg ikke har befalt dem, og jeg er den som vet det og er et vitne, sier Herren.

Because that they have done folly in Israel, and commit adultery with the wives of their neighbours, and speak a word in My name falsely that I have not commanded them, and I `am' He who knoweth and a witness -- an affirmation of Jehovah.

24 Fortell dette til Sjemaja fra Nehelam:

`And unto Shemaiah the Nehelamite thou dost speak, saying,

25 Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud, Israels Gud, fordi du har sendt brev i ditt eget navn til hele folket som er i Jerusalem, til Sefanja, Maasejas sønn, presten, og til alle prestene, og sagt:

Thus said Jehovah of Hosts, God of Israel, saying, Because that thou hast sent in thy name letters unto all the people who `are' in Jerusalem, and unto Zephaniah son of Maaseiah the priest, and unto all the priests, saying,

26 Herren har utpekt deg til prest i stedet for Jojada, presten, for å overse Herrens hus, for å stoppe enhver gal som gjør seg selv til profet ved å sette ham i gapestokk og bånd.

Jehovah hath made thee priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, for there being inspectors of the house of Jehovah, for every one mad and making himself a prophet, and thou hast put him unto the torture and unto the stocks.

27 Så hvorfor har du ikke irettesatt Jeremia fra Anatot, som gjør seg selv til en profet for dere?

And now, why hast thou not pushed against Jeremiah of Anathoth, who is making himself a prophet to you?

28 For han har sendt bud til oss i Babylon: Det vil ta lang tid; bygg hus og bo i dem, plant hager og spis deres frukt.

Because that he hath sent unto us to Babylon, saying, It `is' long, build ye houses, and abide; and plant ye gardens, and eat their fruit.'

29 Sefanja, presten, leste dette brevet for profeten Jeremia.

And Zephaniah the priest readeth this letter in the ears of Jeremiah the prophet.

30 Da kom Herrens ord til Jeremia, og det lød:

And there is a word of Jehovah unto Jeremiah, saying,

31 Send til alle fangne og si: Så sier Herren angående Sjemaja fra Nehelam: Sjemaja har profetert for dere, men jeg har ikke sendt ham, og han har gjort at dere stoler på løgn.

`Send unto all the removal, saying, Thus said Jehovah concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite, Because that Shemaiah prophesied to you, and I -- I have not sent him, and he doth cause you to trust on falsehood,

32 Derfor sier Herren: Se, jeg vil se til Sjemaja fra Nehelam og hans etterkommere; han skal ikke ha noen blant dette folket, og han skal ikke få se det gode jeg vil gjøre for mitt folk, sier Herren, for han har talt opprør mot Herren.

Therefore, thus said Jehovah, Lo, I am seeing after Shemaiah the Nehelamite, and after his seed, he hath none dwelling in the midst of this people, nor doth he look on the good that I am doing to My people -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- for apostacy he hath spoken against Jehovah.'
