1 Da skjedde det at alle kongene som var på den andre siden av Jordan, i fjellene, og i lavlandet, og ved alle havnene ved det store havet overfor Libanon, hetittene, amorittene, kanaanittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene, hørte om det,

And it cometh to pass, when all the kings who `are' beyond the Jordan, in the hill-country, and in the low-country, and in every haven of the great sea, over-against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, hear --

2 og de samlet seg for å kjempe mot Josva og Israel med én stemme.

that they gather themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Israel -- one mouth.

3 Og innbyggerne i Gibeon hadde hørt om hva Josva hadde gjort mot Jeriko og Ai,

And the inhabitants of Gibeon have heard that which Joshua hath done to Jericho and to Ai,

4 og de handlet med list og gikk av sted og lot som de var sendebud. De tok gamle sekker til eslene sine og gamle, sprukne og bundne vinsekker,

and they work, even they, with subtilty, and go, and feign to be ambassadors, and take old sacks for their asses, and wine-bottles, old, and rent, and bound up,

5 gamle og lappede sandaler på føttene og gamle klær på seg, og alt brødet de hadde med seg, var tørt og smuldret.

and sandals, old and patched, on their feet, and old garments upon them, and all the bread of their provision is dry -- it was crumbs.

6 Så dro de til Josva, til leiren i Gilgal, og sa til ham og til mennene i Israel: 'Fra et land langt borte er vi kommet, og nå, inngå en pakt med oss.'

And they go unto Joshua, unto the camp at Gilgal, and say unto him, and unto the men of Israel, `From a land far off we have come, and now, make with us a covenant;'

7 Men mennene i Israel sa til hevittene: 'Kanskje dere bor i nærheten av oss? Hvordan kan vi da inngå en pakt med dere?'

and the men of Israel say unto the Hivite, `It may be in our midst ye are dwelling, and how do we make with thee a covenant?'

8 De sa til Josva: 'Vi er dine tjenere.' Da sa Josva til dem: 'Hvem er dere, og hvor kommer dere fra?'

and they say unto Joshua, `Thy servants we `are'.' And Joshua saith unto them, `Who `are' ye? and whence come ye?'

9 De svarte ham: 'Fra et veldig fjernt land har dine tjenere kommet på grunn av navnet til Herren din Gud, for vi har hørt om ryktet hans, og alt det han har gjort i Egypt,

And they say unto him, `From a land very far off have thy servants come, for the name of Jehovah thy God, for we have heard His fame, and all that He hath done in Egypt,

10 og alt det han har gjort mot de to amorittkongene på den andre siden av Jordan, Sihon, kongen av Hesbon, og Og, kongen av Basan, som bodde i Ashtarot.

and all that He hath done to the two kings of the Amorite who `are' beyond the Jordan, to Sihon king of Heshbon, and to Og king of Bashan, who `is' in Ashtaroth.

11 Derfor sa våre eldste og alle innbyggerne i vårt land til oss: Ta med dere proviant til reisen og gå for å møte dem, og si til dem: Vi er deres tjenere. Nå, inngå en pakt med oss.

`And our elders, and all the inhabitants of our land speak unto us, saying, Take in your hand provision for the way, and go to meet them, and ye have said unto them, Your servants we `are', and now, make with us a covenant;

12 Dette brødet tok vi varmt med oss fra husene våre den dagen vi dro for å komme til dere, og nå se, det er tørt og smuler.

this our bread -- hot we provided ourselves with it out of our houses, on the day of our coming out to go unto you, and now, lo, it is dry, and hath been crumbs;

13 Og disse vinsekkene som vi fylte, var nye, men se, de er revnet, og klærne våre og sandalene våre er blitt gamle på grunn av den lange veien.'

and these `are' the wine-bottles which we filled, new, and lo, they have rent; and these, our garments and our sandals, have become old, from the exceeding greatness of the way.'

14 Da tok mennene av deres proviant, men spurte ikke Herren om råd.

And the men take of their provision, and the mouth of Jehovah have not asked;

15 Så sluttet Josva fred med dem og inngikk en pakt med dem om å la dem leve, og menighetens ledere sverget en ed til dem.

and Joshua maketh with them peace, and maketh with them a covenant, to keep them alive; and swear to them do the princes of the company.

16 Men tre dager etter at de hadde inngått pakten med dem, fikk de høre at de var deres naboer og bodde midt iblant dem.

And it cometh to pass, at the end of three days after that they have made with them a covenant, that they hear that they `are' their neighbours -- that in their midst they are dwelling.

17 Israels barn brøt opp og kom til deres byer på den tredje dagen. Byene deres var Gibeon, Kefira, Beerot og Kirjat-Jearim.

And the sons of Israel journey and come in unto their cities on the third day -- and their cities `are' Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-Jearim --

18 Israels barn angrep dem ikke, fordi menighetens ledere hadde sverget dem en ed ved Herren, Israels Gud. Og hele menigheten knurret mot lederne.

and the sons of Israel have not smitten them, for sworn to them have the princes of the company by Jehovah God of Israel, and all the company murmur against the princes.

19 Da sa alle lederne til menigheten: 'Vi har sverget til dem ved Herren, Israels Gud, og nå kan vi ikke angripe dem.

And all the princes say unto all the company, `We -- we have sworn to them by Jehovah, God of Israel; and now, we are not able to come against them;

20 Dette skal vi gjøre med dem: La dem leve, for at ingen vrede skal komme over oss på grunn av eden vi sverget til dem.'

this we do to them, and have kept them alive, and wrath is not upon us, because of the oath which we have sworn to them.'

21 Og lederne sa til dem: 'La dem leve, og de skal bli vedhuggerne og vannbærerne for hele menigheten, slik lederne har sagt til dem.'

And the princes say unto them, `They live, and are hewers of wood and drawers of water for all the company, as the princes spake to them.'

22 Josva kalte dem til seg og sa til dem: 'Hvorfor har dere lurt oss ved å si: Vi er veldig langt borte fra dere, da dere bor midt iblant oss?

And Joshua calleth for them, and speaketh unto them, saying, `Why have ye deceived us, saying, We are very far from you, and ye in our midst dwelling?

23 Nå skal dere være forbannet, og ingen av dere skal bli fri fra å være tjenere, vedhoggere og vannbærere for min Guds hus.'

and now, cursed are ye, and none of you is cut off `from being' a servant, even hewers of wood and drawers of water, for the house of my God.'

24 De svarte Josva og sa: 'For det ble sagt til dine tjenere at Herren din Gud hadde befalt Moses, sin tjener, å gi dere hele landet og å utrydde alle innbyggerne foran dere. Derfor ble vi svært redde for våre liv på grunn av dere, og vi gjorde dette.

And they answer Joshua and say, `Because it was certainly declared to thy servants, that Jehovah thy God commanded Moses His servant to give to you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you; and we fear greatly for ourselves because of you, and we do this thing;

25 Og nå, her er vi i dine hender. Gjør med oss det som er godt og rett i dine øyne.'

and now, lo, we `are' in thy hand, as `it is' good, and as `it is' right in thine eyes to do to us -- do.'

26 Og han gjorde slik mot dem og reddet dem fra Israels barn, og de drepte dem ikke.

And he doth to them so, and delivereth them from the hand of the sons of Israel, and they have not slain them;

27 Og Josva gjorde dem den dagen til vedhuggere og vannbærere for menigheten og for Herrens alter, den dag i dag, på det stedet han velger.

and Joshua maketh them on that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the company, and for the altar of Jehovah, unto this day, at the place which He doth choose.
