1 Og dette er de nasjoner som Herren lot bli igjen for å sette Israel på prøve, alle som ikke hadde kjent til alle krigene i Kanaan;

And these `are' the nations which Jehovah left, to try Israel by them, all who have not known all the wars of Canaan;

five princes of the Philistines, and all the Canaanite, and the Zidonian, and the Hivite inhabiting mount Lebanon, from mount Baal-Hermon unto the entering in of Hamath;

4 Og disse var der for å prøve Israel, for å se om de ville adlyde de bud Herren hadde gitt deres fedre gjennom Moses.

and they are to prove Israel by them, to know whether they obey the commands of Jehovah that He commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

5 Og Israels barn bodde midt blant kanaanitterne, hetittene, amorittene, perisittene, hevittene og jebusittene.

And the sons of Israel have dwelt in the midst of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite,

6 De tok deres døtre til koner, og de ga sine egne døtre til deres sønner og tjente deres guder.

and take their daughters to them for wives, and their daughters have given to their sons, and they serve their gods;

7 Og Israels barn gjorde det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, de glemte Herren sin Gud og tjente Baal og Asjera.

and the sons of Israel do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah, and forget Jehovah their God, and serve the Baalim and the shrines.

8 Da ble Herrens vrede opptent mot Israel, og han overga dem i Chushan-Risjataims hånd, kongen av Aram-Naharaim, og Israels barn tjente Chushan-Risjataim i åtte år.

And the anger of Jehovah burneth against Israel, and He selleth them into the hand of Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram-Naharaim, and the sons of Israel serve Chushan-Rishathaim eight years;

9 Da ropte Israels barn til Herren, og Herren reiste opp en frelser for dem, Otniel sønn av Kenaz,Kalebs yngre bror; han frelste dem.

and the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth a saviour to the sons of Israel, and he saveth them -- Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother;

10 Og Herrens ånd kom over ham, og han dømte Israel og dro ut i krig, og Herren ga Chushan-Risjataim, kongen av Aram, i hans hånd, og hans hånd var sterk mot Chushan-Risjataim.

and the Spirit of Jehovah is upon him, and he judgeth Israel, and goeth out to battle, and Jehovah giveth unto his hand Chushan-Rishathaim king of Aram, and strong is his hand against Chushan-Rishathaim;

11 Og landet hadde hvile i førti år. Da døde Otniel, sønn av Kenaz.

and the land resteth forty years. And Othniel son of Kenaz dieth,

12 Og Israels barn gjorde igjen det som var ondt i Herrens øyne, og Herren styrket Eglon, Moabs konge, mot Israel fordi de hadde gjort det som var ondt i Herrens øyne.

and the sons of Israel add to do the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah; and Jehovah strengtheneth Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because that they have done the evil thing in the eyes of Jehovah;

13 Og han samlet rundt seg ammonittene og amalekittene, og dro og slo Israel, og tok Palmenes by i eie.

and he gathereth unto him the Bene-Ammon and Amalek, and goeth and smiteth Israel, and they possess the city of palms;

14 Og Israels barn tjente Eglon, Moabs konge, i atten år.

and the sons of Israel serve Eglon king of Moab eighteen years.

15 Da ropte Israels barn til Herren, og Herren reiste opp for dem en frelser, Ehud, sønn av Gera, en benjaminit (en mann som var venstrehendt), og Israels barn sendte gjennom ham en gave til Eglon, Moabs konge.

And the sons of Israel cry unto Jehovah, and Jehovah raiseth to them a saviour, Ehud son of Gera, a Benjamite (a man -- shut of his right hand), and the sons of Israel send by his hand a present to Eglon king of Moab;

16 Og Ehud laget seg et sverd med to egg, en alen langt, og festet det under sine klær på sin høyre hofte.

and Ehud maketh for himself a sword, and it hath two mouths (a cubit `is' its length), and he girdeth it under his long robe on his right thigh;

17 Og han brakte frem gaven til Eglon, Moabs konge, som var en meget tykk mann.

and he bringeth near the present to Eglon king of Moab, and Eglon `is' a very fat man.

18 Og da han var ferdig med å overrekke gaven, sendte han bort folket som hadde båret gaven.

And it cometh to pass, when he hath finished to bring near the present, that he sendeth away the people bearing the present,

19 Men han selv vendte tilbake fra de utskårne bildene ved Gilgal og sa, 'Jeg har et hemmelig ord til deg, konge.' Han sa: 'Stille!' Og alle som stod hos kongen gikk ut fra ham.

and he himself hath turned back from the graven images which `are' at Gilgal, and saith, `A secret word I have unto thee, O king;' and he saith, `Hush!' and go out from him do all those standing by him.

20 Ehud kom da til ham mens han satt alene i det svale rommet på taket, og Ehud sa, 'Jeg har et gudsord til deg.' Da reiste han seg fra sin trone.

And Ehud hath come unto him, and he is sitting in the upper chamber of the wall which he hath for himself, and Ehud saith, `A word of God I have unto thee;' and he riseth from off the throne;

21 Ehud rakte ut sin venstre hånd, tok sverdet fra sin høyre hofte og stakk det i hans mage.

and Ehud putteth forth his left hand, and taketh the sword from off his right thigh, and striketh it into his belly;

22 Og også festet gikk inn etter bladet, og fettet lukket seg etter bladet, så han ikke kunne trekke sverdet ut av hans mage, og det gikk ut på den nedre delen.

and the haft also goeth in after the blade, and the fat shutteth on the blade, that he hath not drawn the sword out of his belly, and it goeth out at the fundament.

23 Ehud gikk ut på verandaen, lukket dørene til det svale rommet bak seg, og låste dem.

And Ehud goeth out at the porch, and shutteth the doors of the upper chamber upon him, and hath bolted `it';

24 Da han hadde gått ut, kom kongens tjenere inn, og se, dørene til det svale rommet var låst, og de sa: 'Han dekker sine føtter i svale rommet.'

and he hath gone out, and his servants have come in, and look, and lo, the doors of the upper chamber are bolted, and they say, `He is only covering his feet in the inner chamber of the wall.'

25 De ventet til de ble bekymret, men da han ikke åpnet dørene til det svale rommet, tok de en nøkkel og åpnet, og se, deres herre lå på bakken død.

And they stay till confounded, and lo, he is not opening the doors of the upper chamber, and they take the key, and open, and lo, their lord is fallen to the earth -- dead.

26 Ehud hadde flyktet mens de nølte, og han hadde passert de utskårne bildene og flyktet til Seira.

And Ehud escaped during their tarrying, and hath passed by the images, and is escaped to Seirath.

27 Og da han kom dit, blåste han i basun på Efraims fjell, og Israels barn dro ned med ham fra fjellet, og han gikk foran dem.

And it cometh to pass, in his coming in, that he bloweth with a trumpet in the hill-country of Ephraim, and go down with him do the sons of Israel from the hill-country, and he before them;

28 Og han sa til dem, 'Følg meg, for Herren har gitt deres fiender, moabittene, i deres hånd.' Og de fulgte etter ham, og tok overgangene over Jordan mot Moab, og tillot ingen mann å passere over.

and he saith unto them, `Pursue after me, for Jehovah hath given your enemies, the Moabites, into your hand;' and they go down after him, and capture the passages of the Jordan towards Moab, and have not permitted a man to pass over.

29 Og de slo Moab den gangen, omkring ti tusen menn, alle sterke og tapre, og ikke en mann unnslapp.

And they smite Moab at that time, about ten thousand men, all robust, and every one a man of valour, and not a man hath escaped,

30 Og samme dag ble Moab ydmyket under Israels hånd, og landet hadde hvile i åtti år.

and Moab is humbled in that day under the hand of Israel; and the land resteth eighty years.

31 Etter ham kom Shamgar, sønn av Anat, som slo seks hundre filistere med en oksekjeppe, og han frelste også Israel.

And after him hath been Shamgar son of Anath, and he smiteth the Philistines -- six hundred men -- with an ox-goad, and he saveth -- he also -- Israel.
