1 Da talte Jesus til folkemengden og disiplene sine,

Then Jesus spake to the multitudes, and to his disciples,

2 og sa: «På Mose stol har de skriftlærde og fariseerne satt seg.

saying, `On the seat of Moses sat down the scribes and the Pharisees;

3 Alt de sier til dere, skal dere derfor gjøre og overholde, men følg ikke deres gjerninger, for de sier, men gjør ikke.

all, then, as much as they may say to you to observe, observe and do, but according to their works do not, for they say, and do not;

4 De binder sammen tunge byrder som er vanskelige å bære, og legger dem på menneskenes skuldre, men selv vil de ikke røre dem med en finger.

for they bind together burdens heavy and grievous to be borne, and lay upon the shoulders of men, but with their finger they will not move them.

5 Alle sine gjerninger gjør de for å bli sett av mennesker. De gjør sine bønneremmer brede og kappene sine med lange kantdusker,

`And all their works they do to be seen by men, and they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the fringes of their garments,

6 de elsker hedersplassene i selskapsmåltider og de fremste setene i synagogene,

they love also the chief couches in the supper, and the chief seats in the synagogues,

7 og hilsningene på torgene, og å bli kalt Rabbi av folk.

and the salutations in the market-places, and to be called by men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8 Men dere skal ikke la dere kalle Rabbi, for én er deres læremester, Kristus, og dere er alle brødre.

`And ye -- ye may not be called Rabbi, for one is your director -- the Christ, and all ye are brethren;

9 Og kall ikke noen på jorden deres far, for én er deres Far, han som er i himmelen.

and ye may not call `any' your father on the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens,

10 La dere heller ikke kalle lærere, for én er deres lærer, Kristus.

nor may ye be called directors, for one is your director -- the Christ.

11 Den største blant dere skal være deres tjener.

And the greater of you shall be your ministrant,

12 Den som opphøyer seg selv, skal ydmykes, og den som ydmyker seg selv, skal opphøyes.

and whoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and whoever shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere stenger himmelriket for menneskene, dere går ikke inn selv, og de som vil gå inn, hindrer dere.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye shut up the reign of the heavens before men, for ye do not go in, nor those going in do ye suffer to enter.

14 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere spiser opp enkers hus, og for syns skyld holder dere lange bønner. Derfor skal dere få en desto større dom.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye eat up the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, because of this ye shall receive more abundant judgment.

15 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere farer over hav og land for å vinne én enkelt proselytt, og når han er vunnet, gjør dere ham til et evig fortapelsens barn, dobbelt verre enn dere selv.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye go round the sea and the dry land to make one proselyte, and whenever it may happen -- ye make him a son of gehenna twofold more than yourselves.

16 Ve dere, blinde veiledere, som sier: «Den som sverger ved templet, det betyr ingenting, men den som sverger ved gullet i templet, han er bundet.»

`Wo to you, blind guides, who are saying, Whoever may swear by the sanctuary, it is nothing, but whoever may swear by the gold of the sanctuary -- is debtor!

17 Tåper og blinde! For hva er størst, gullet eller templet som helliger gullet?

Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gold, or the sanctuary that is sanctifying the gold?

18 Og den som sverger ved alteret, det betyr ingenting, men den som sverger ved offergaven som ligger på det, han er bundet.

`And, whoever may swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whoever may swear by the gift that is upon it -- is debtor!

19 Tåper og blinde! For hva er størst, offergaven eller alteret som helliger gaven?

Fools and blind! for which `is' greater, the gift, or the altar that is sanctifying the gift?

20 Den som sverger ved alteret, sverger både ved det og ved alt som er på det.

`He therefore who did swear by the altar, doth swear by it, and by all things on it;

21 Og den som sverger ved templet, sverger både ved det og ved Ham som bor i det.

and he who did swear by the sanctuary, doth swear by it, and by Him who is dwelling in it;

22 Og den som sverger ved himmelen, sverger ved Guds trone og ved Ham som sitter på den.

and he who did swear by the heaven, doth swear by the throne of God, and by Him who is sitting upon it.

23 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere gir tiende av mynte, anis og karve, men forsømmer de viktigere delene av loven: rettferdighet, barmhjertighet og trofasthet. Dette skulle dere gjort, og det andre ikke forsømt.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye give tithe of the mint, and the dill, and the cumin, and did neglect the weightier things of the Law -- the judgment, and the kindness, and the faith; these it behoved `you' to do, and those not to neglect.

24 Blinde veiledere som siler bort myggen, men sluker kamelen!

`Blind guides! who are straining out the gnat, and the camel are swallowing.

25 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere renser utsiden av begeret og fatet, men de er fulle av grådighet og selvbeherskelsesløshet innvendig.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye make clean the outside of the cup and the plate, and within they are full of rapine and incontinence.

26 Blinde fariseer! Rens først innsiden av begeret og fatet, så skal også utsiden bli ren.

`Blind Pharisee! cleanse first the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside of them also may become clean.

27 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere er som kalkede gravsteder som ser vakre ut utenpå, men innvendig er fulle av dødningeben og all slags urenhet.

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye are like to whitewashed sepulchres, which outwardly indeed do appear beautiful, and within are full of bones of dead men, and of all uncleanness;

28 Slik er også dere, utvendig ser dere rettferdige ut for folk, men innvendig er dere fulle av hykleri og lovløshet.

so also ye outwardly indeed do appear to men righteous, and within ye are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.

29 Ve dere, skriftlærde og fariseere, hyklere! For dere bygger gravsteder for profetene og pynter gravene til de rettferdige,

`Wo to you, Scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the tombs of the righteous,

30 og sier: «Hadde vi levd i våre fedres dager, ville vi ikke ha vært delaktige med dem i profetenes blod.»

and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31 Slik vitner dere mot dere selv, at dere er etterkommere av dem som drepte profetene.

So that ye testify to yourselves, that ye are sons of them who did murder the prophets;

32 Fyll da opp målet for deres fedre!

and ye -- ye fill up the measure of your fathers.

33 Slanger, ormeyngel, hvordan kan dere unnslippe dommen til helvete?

`Serpents! brood of vipers! how may ye escape from the judgment of the gehenna?

34 Derfor sender jeg dere profeter, vismenn og skriftlærde. Noen av dem vil dere drepe og korsfeste, noen vil dere piske i synagogene deres og forfølge fra by til by,

`Because of this, lo, I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes, and of them ye will kill and crucify, and of them ye will scourge in your synagogues, and will pursue from city to city;

35 slik at alt det rettferdige blod som er utøst på jorden, kommer over dere, fra Abels blod, den rettferdige, til blodet av Sakarja, Barakias' sønn, han som dere myrdet mellom templet og alteret.

that on you may come all the righteous blood being poured out on the earth from the blood of Abel the righteous, unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye slew between the sanctuary and the altar:

36 Sannelig, jeg sier dere: Alt dette skal komme over denne slekten.

verily I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation.

37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, du som dreper profetene og steiner dem som er sendt til deg! Hvor ofte har jeg ønsket å samle dine barn slik en høne samler sine kyllinger under vingene sine, men dere ville ikke.

`Jerusalem, Jerusalem, that art killing the prophets, and stoning those sent unto thee, how often did I will to gather thy children together, as a hen doth gather her own chickens under the wings, and ye did not will.

38 Se, deres hus blir overlatt til dere som øde.

Lo, left desolate to you is your house;

39 For jeg sier dere: Fra nå av skal dere ikke se meg før dere sier: Velsignet er han som kommer i Herrens navn.»

for I say to you, ye may not see me henceforth, till ye may say, Blessed `is' he who is coming in the name of the Lord.'
