1 Da Sanballat hørte at vi bygde muren, var han misfornøyd og veldig sint, og han spottet jødene,

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard that we are building the wall, that it is displeasing to him, and he is very angry and mocketh at the Jews,

2 og sa foran sine brødre og Samarias hær: Hva er det disse svake jødene gjør? Får de gjøre på egen hånd? Tilber de? Skal de fullføre det på én dag? Skal de gi nytt liv til steinene fra ruinene, enda de er brent?

and saith before his brethren and the force of Samaria, yea, he saith, `What `are' the weak Jews doing? are they left to themselves? do they sacrifice? do they complete in a day? do they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish? -- and they burnt!'

3 Tobia ammonitten som sto ved siden av ham, sa: Det de bygger – hvis en rev skulle gå opp på det, ville den bryte ned steinmuren deres.

And Tobiah the Ammonite `is' by him and saith, `Also, that which they are building -- if a fox doth go up, then it hath broken down their stone wall.'

4 Hør, vår Gud, for vi er blitt foraktet. Vend deres spott tilbake på deres eget hode, og gi dem til plyndring i fangenskapets land.

Hear, O our God, for we have been despised; and turn back their reproach on their own head, and give them for a spoil in a land of captivity;

5 Og skjul ikke deres ondskap, la ikke synden deres bli slettet ut fra ditt ansikt, for de har vekket din vrede mot dem som bygger.

and do not cover over their iniquity, and their sin from before Thee let not be blotted out, for they have provoked to anger -- over-against those building.

6 Så bygde vi muren, og hele muren ble forent til halv høyde, og folket hadde vilje til å arbeide.

And we build the wall, and all the wall is joined -- unto its half, and the people have a heart to work.

7 Da Sanballat, Tobia, araberne, ammonittene og asjdodittene hørte at murene i Jerusalem vokste og bruddene begynte å tettes, ble de svært misfornøyde,

And it cometh to pass, when Sanballat hath heard, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, that lengthening hath gone up to the walls of Jerusalem, that the breeches have begun to be stopped, then it is very displeasing to them,

8 og de sammensverget seg alle om å komme og kjempe mot Jerusalem og skade det.

and they conspire, all of them together, to come in to fight against Jerusalem, and to do to it injury.

9 Men vi ba til vår Gud og satte vakt mot dem, dag og natt, på grunn av dem.

And we pray unto our God, and appoint a watch against them, by day and by night, because of them.

10 Juda sa: Bærernes styrke er svak og rasmassene er mange, og vi klarer ikke å bygge på muren.

And Judah saith, `The power of the burden-bearers hath become feeble, and the rubbish `is' abundant, and we are not able to build on the wall.'

11 Og våre motstandere sa: De vil ikke vite eller se før vi er midt iblant dem, har drept dem og stanset arbeidet.

And our adversaries say, `They do not know, nor see, till that we come in to their midst, and have slain them, and caused the work to cease.'

12 Da jødene som bodde nær oss kom inn og sa til oss ti ganger fra alle kantene: De er mot oss.

And it cometh to pass, when the Jews have come who are dwelling near them, that they say to us ten times from all the places whither ye return -- `they are' against us.

13 Så satte jeg folk på de laveste stedene bak muren, på de åpne stedene, og jeg stilte dem opp etter familier med sverd, spyd og buer.

And I appoint at the lowest of the places, at the back of the wall, in the clear places, yea, I appoint the people, by their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

14 Jeg så, steg opp og sa til de fornemme og til lederne og til resten av folket: Vær ikke redde for dem; husk Herren, den store og fryktinngytende, og kjemp for deres brødre, sønner, døtre, hustruer og hus.

And I see, and rise up, and say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `Be not afraid of them; the Lord, the great and the fearful, remember ye, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.'

15 Når våre fiender hørte at vi hadde oppdaget planen deres og at Gud hadde gjort den om intet, vendte vi alle tilbake til muren, hver til sitt arbeid.

And it cometh to pass, when our enemies have heard that it hath been known to us, and God doth frustrate their counsel, and we turn back, all of us, unto the wall, each unto his work;

16 Fra den dagen hadde halvparten av mine tjenere ansvar for arbeidet, mens den andre halvparten holdt våpnene, skjoldene, buene, og brynjene; lederne sto bak hele folket i Juda.

yea, it cometh to pass, from that day, half of my servants are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the heads `are' behind all the house of Judah.

17 De som bygde på muren, og bærerne med byrdene, arbeidet med den ene hånden og holdt våpenet med den andre.

The builders on the wall, and the bearers of the burden, those lading, `each' with one of his hands is working in the business, and one is laying hold of the missile.

18 Hver bygningsmann hadde sitt sverd festet om lendene mens han arbeidet, og han som blåste i basunen sto ved siden av meg.

And the builders `are' each with his sword, girded on his loins, and building, and he who is blowing with a trumpet `is' beside me.

19 Jeg sa til de fornemme, lederne og resten av folket: Arbeidet er stort og omfattende, og vi er spredt på muren, langt fra hverandre.

And I say unto the freemen, and unto the prefects, and unto the rest of the people, `The work is abundant, and large, and we are separated on the wall, far off one from another;

20 Hvor dere enn hører lyden av basunen, der skal dere samle dere til oss. Vår Gud vil kjempe for oss.

in the place that ye hear the voice of the trumpet thither ye are gathered unto us; our God doth fight for us.'

21 Vi arbeidet fortsatt med verket, og halvparten av mennene holdt våpnene fra morgengry til stjernene kom frem.

And we are working in the business, and half of them are keeping hold of the spears, from the going up of the dawn till the coming forth of the stars.

22 På den tiden sa jeg også til folket: La alle, sammen med sin tjener, bli over i Jerusalem, slik at de kan tjene som vakt om natten og arbeidere om dagen.

Also, at that time I said to the people, `Let each with his servant lodge in the midst of Jerusalem, and they have been to us by night a guard, and by day `for' the work:'

23 Verken jeg, mine brødre, mine tjenere eller vaktene som fulgte meg, skiftet klær. Hver av oss beholdt sitt våpen i hånden også når vi hentet vann.

and there are none -- I and my brethren and my servants, the men of the guard who `are' after me -- there are none of us putting off our garments, each `hath' his vessel of water.
