Saul, som fortsatt truet og ønsket å drepe Herrens disipler, gikk til ypperstepresten.

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest,

Han ba om brev til synagogene i Damaskus, slik at hvis han fant noen som fulgte Veien, enten menn eller kvinner, kunne han føre dem bundet til Jerusalem.

And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem.

Mens han reiste, nærmet han seg Damaskus, og plutselig skinte et lys fra himmelen omkring ham.

And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven:

Han falt til jorden og hørte en stemme si: "Saul, Saul, hvorfor forfølger du meg?"

And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Han spurte: "Hvem er du, Herre?" Herren svarte: "Jeg er Jesus, den du forfølger. Det er hardt for deg å stampe mot broddene."

And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks.

Han, skjelvende og forbløffet, sa: "Herre, hva vil du jeg skal gjøre?" Herren sa til ham: "Reis deg og gå inn i byen, så vil det bli fortalt deg hva du skal gjøre."

And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

De som reiste med ham stod målløse, for de hørte stemmen men så ingen.

And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.

Saul reiste seg fra jorden, men da han åpnet øynene, kunne han ikke se. De tok ham i hånden og førte ham til Damaskus.

And Saul arose from the earth; and when his eyes were opened, he saw no man: but they led him by the hand, and brought him into Damascus.

I tre dager var han uten syn, og han verken spiste eller drakk.

And he was three days without sight, and neither did eat nor drink.

I Damaskus var det en disippel ved navn Ananias. Herren sa til ham i et syn: "Ananias." Han svarte: "Her er jeg, Herre."

And there was a certain disciple at Damascus, named Ananias; and to him said the Lord in a vision, Ananias. And he said, Behold, I am here, Lord.

Herren sa til ham: "Reis deg, gå til gaten som kalles Rett, og spør i Judas' hus etter en som heter Saul fra Tarsus, for se, han ber.

And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the street which is called Straight, and inquire in the house of Judas for one called Saul, of Tarsus: for, behold, he prayeth,

Han har sett i et syn at en mann ved navn Ananias kommer og legger hendene på ham, slik at han kan få synet tilbake."

And hath seen in a vision a man named Ananias coming in, and putting his hand on him, that he might receive his sight.

Ananias svarte: "Herre, jeg har hørt fra mange om denne mannen, hvor mye ondt han har gjort mot dine hellige i Jerusalem.

Then Ananias answered, Lord, I have heard by many of this man, how much evil he hath done to thy saints at Jerusalem:

Her har han myndighet fra yppersteprestene til å binde alle som påkaller ditt navn."

And here he hath authority from the chief priests to bind all that call on thy name.

Men Herren sa til ham: "Gå, for han er et utvalgt redskap for meg, til å bære mitt navn frem for hedninger, konger og Israels barn.

But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:

For jeg vil vise ham hvor mye han må lide for mitt navns skyld."

For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for my name's sake.

Ananias gikk, kom inn i huset, la hendene på ham og sa: "Bror Saul, Herren Jesus, som åpenbarte seg for deg på veien hit, har sendt meg for at du skal få synet ditt tilbake og bli fylt med Den Hellige Ånd."

And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.

Umiddelbart falt noe som skjell fra øynene hans, og han fikk synet tilbake. Han stod opp og ble døpt.

And immediately there fell from his eyes as it had been scales: and he received sight forthwith, and arose, and was baptized.

Da han hadde fått mat, ble han styrket. Saul var deretter noen dager sammen med disiplene i Damaskus.

And when he had received meat, he was strengthened. Then was Saul certain days with the disciples which were at Damascus.

Straks begynte han å forkynne Kristus i synagogene og sa at han er Guds Sønn.

And straightway he prehed Christ in the synagogues, that he is the Son of God.

Alle som hørte ham, var forundret og sa: "Er ikke dette han som bekjempet dem som påkalte dette navnet i Jerusalem, og kom hit for å føre dem bundet til yppersteprestene?"

But all that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests?

Men Saul ble stadig sterkere og satte de jødene som bodde i Damaskus ut av fatning ved å bevise at dette var Kristus.

But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt at Damascus, proving that this is very Christ.

Etter mange dager la jødene planer om å drepe ham.

And after that many days were fulfilled, the Jews took counsel to kill him:

Men Saul fikk vite om planen deres. De voktet portene dag og natt for å drepe ham.

But their laying await was known of Saul. And they watched the gates day and night to kill him.

Så tok disiplene ham om natten og firte ham ned over muren i en kurv.

Then the disciples took him by night, and let him down by the wall in a basket.

Da Saul kom til Jerusalem, forsøkte han å slutte seg til disiplene, men alle var redde for ham og trodde ikke han var en disippel.

And when Saul was come to Jerusalem, he assayed to join himself to the disciples: but they were all afraid of him, and believed not that he was a disciple.

Men Barnabas tok ham med til apostlene og fortalte dem hvordan han hadde sett Herren på veien, at Herren hadde talt til ham, og hvordan han hadde preket fritt i Damaskus i Jesu navn.

But Barnabas took him, and brought him to the apostles, and declared unto them how he had seen the Lord in the way, and that he had spoken to him, and how he had prehed boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus.

Han var sammen med dem i Jerusalem, fri til å komme og gå.

And he was with them coming in and going out at Jerusalem.

Han talte frimodig i Jesu navn og diskuterte med grekerne, men de prøvde å drepe ham.

And he spake boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus, and disputed against the Grecians: but they went about to slay him.

Da brødrene fikk vite det, førte de ham til Cæsarea og sendte ham til Tarsus.

Which when the brethren knew, they brought him down to Caesarea, and sent him forth to Tarsus.

Da fikk menighetene i hele Judea, Galilea og Samaria fred og ble bygd opp; de levde i frykt for Herren og i Den Hellige Ånds oppmuntring, og de vokste i antall.

Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.

Peter reiste omkring overalt, og han kom også ned til de hellige som bodde i Lydda.

And it came to pass, as Peter passed throughout all quarters, he came down also to the saints which dwelt at Lydda.

Der fant han en mann ved navn Aeneas, som hadde ligget til sengs i åtte år, rammet av lammelse.

And there he found a certain man named AEneas, which had kept his bed eight years, and was sick of the palsy.

Peter sa til ham: "Aeneas, Jesus Kristus helbreder deg. Reis deg og red opp sengen din." Straks reiste han seg.

And Peter said unto him, AEneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.

Alle som bodde i Lydda og Saron så ham, og de vendte seg til Herren.

And all that dwelt at Lydda and Saron saw him, and turned to the Lord.

I Joppe var det en disippel som het Tabita, også kalt Dorkas: hun var full av gode gjerninger og gavmildhet.

Now there was at Joppa a certain disciple named Tabitha, which by interpretation is called Dorcas: this woman was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

Det skjedde i de dager at hun ble syk og døde. De vasket kroppen hennes og la henne i et loftsrom.

And it came to pass in those days, that she was sick, and died: whom when they had washed, they laid her in an upper chamber.

Siden Lydda lå nær Joppe, og disiplene hadde hørt at Peter var der, sendte de to menn til ham med bønn om at han ikke måtte nøle med å komme til dem.

And forasmuch as Lydda was nigh to Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent unto him two men, desiring him that he would not delay to come to them.

Peter reiste seg og dro med dem. Da han kom, førte de ham opp i loftsrommet. Alle enkene sto der gråtende og viste frem tunikaene og klærne som Dorkas hadde laget mens hun var hos dem.

Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them.

Peter sendte dem alle ut, knelte og ba. Så vendte han seg mot den døde og sa: "Tabita, stå opp!" Hun åpnet øynene, og da hun så Peter, satte hun seg opp.

But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up.

Han tok henne i hånden, reiste henne opp, og da han hadde kalt inn de hellige og enkene, presenterte han henne levende.

And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive.

Dette ble kjent over hele Joppe, og mange kom til tro på Herren.

And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord.

Peter ble der mange dager hos en skinnbereder ved navn Simon.

And it came to pass, that he tarried many days in Joppa with one Simon a tanner.
