En dag mens David satt i sitt hus, sa han til profeten Natan: «Se, jeg bor i et hus av seder, men Herrens paktsark står fortsatt under teltvegger.»

Now it came to pass, as David sat in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, Lo, I dwell in an house of cedars, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD remaineth under curtains.

Da sa Natan til David: «Gjør alt som er i ditt hjerte, for Gud er med deg.»

Then Nathan said unto David, Do all that is in thine heart; for God is with thee.

Men samme natt kom Guds ord til Natan og sa:

And it came to pass the same night, that the word of God came to Nathan, saying,

«Gå og si til min tjener David: Dette sier Herren: Du skal ikke bygge meg et hus å bo i.

Go and tell David my servant, Thus saith the LORD, Thou shalt not build me an house to dwell in:

For jeg har ikke bodd i et hus fra den dagen jeg førte Israel opp til denne dag, men jeg har flyttet fra telt til telt, og fra helligdom til helligdom.

For I have not dwelt in an house since the day that I brought up Israel unto this day; but have gone from tent to tent, and from one tabernacle to another.

Overalt hvor jeg har vandret med hele Israel, talte jeg da et ord til noen av Israels dommere, som jeg befalte å være hyrde for mitt folk, og sa: Hvorfor har dere ikke bygget meg et hus av seder?

Wheresoever I have walked with all Israel, spake I a word to any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to feed my people, saying, Why have ye not built me an house of cedars?

Derfor skal du nå si til min tjener David: Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg tok deg fra beitemarken, der du fulgte sauene, for at du skulle bli fyrste over mitt folk Israel.

Now therefore thus shalt thou say unto my servant David, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote, even from following the sheep, that thou shouldest be ruler over my people Israel:

Jeg har vært med deg overalt hvor du har gått, og jeg har utryddet alle dine fiender foran deg. Jeg har gjort deg et navn, lik navnet til de store menn på jorden.

And I have been with thee whithersoever thou hast walked, and have cut off all thine enemies from before thee, and have made thee a name like the name of the great men that are in the earth.

Jeg vil også gi et sted til mitt folk Israel og plante dem, slik at de kan bo der i ro og ikke bli forstyrret mer. Urettens barn skal ikke kue dem mer, slik de gjorde før,

Also I will ordain a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more; neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning,

siden den tid jeg satte dommere over mitt folk Israel. Jeg vil beseire alle dine fiender. Videre forteller jeg deg at Herren skal bygge deg et hus.

And since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel. Moreover I will subdue all thine enemies. Furthermore I tell thee that the LORD will build thee an house.

Når dine dager er til ende og du går til dine fedre, vil jeg oppreise din ætt etter deg, en av dine sønner, og jeg vil grunnfeste hans rike.

And it shall come to pass, when thy days be expired that thou must go to be with thy fathers, that I will raise up thy seed after thee, which shall be of thy sons; and I will establish his kingdom.

Han skal bygge meg et hus, og jeg vil grunnfeste hans trone for alltid.

He shall build me an house, and I will stablish his throne for ever.

Jeg vil være hans far, og han skal være min sønn. Jeg vil ikke ta min miskunn fra ham slik jeg tok den fra han som var før deg.

I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:

Men jeg vil plassere ham i mitt hus og i mitt rike for alltid, og hans trone skal bli grunnfested for evig.

But I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom for ever: and his throne shall be established for evermore.

I samsvar med alle disse ordene og i samsvar med hele denne synen talte Natan til David.

According to all these words, and according to all this vision, so did Nathan speak unto David.

Og kong David kom og satte seg foran Herren og sa: «Hvem er jeg, Herre Gud, og hva er mitt hus, at du har ført meg så langt?

And David the king came and sat before the LORD, and said, Who am I, O LORD God, and what is mine house, that thou hast brought me hitherto?

Og likevel var dette en liten ting i dine øyne, Gud. Du har også talt om din tjeners hus for en lang framtid, og du har vurdert meg i tråd med en stor manns posisjon, Herre Gud.

And yet this was a small thing in thine eyes, O God; for thou hast also spoken of thy servant's house for a great while to come, and hast regarded me according to the estate of a man of high degree, O LORD God.

Hva mer kan David si til deg for æren til din tjener, når du kjenner din tjener?

What can David speak more to thee for the honour of thy servant? for thou knowest thy servant.

Herre, for din tjeners skyld, og i tråd med ditt hjerte, har du gjort alt dette store ved å kunngjøre alle disse store tingene.

O LORD, for thy servant's sake, and according to thine own heart, hast thou done all this greatness, in making known all these great things.

Herre, det finnes ingen som deg, og det finnes ingen Gud foruten deg, i henhold til alt vi har hørt med våre ører.

O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

Og hva er en nasjon på jorden lik ditt folk Israel, som Gud gikk for å fri ut for å være sitt eget folk, for å gjøre ditt navn stort og fryktinngytende ved å drive ut nasjoner for ditt folk, som du har befridd fra Egypt?

And what one nation in the earth is like thy people Israel, whom God went to redeem to be his own people, to make thee a name of greatness and terribleness, by driving out nations from before thy people, whom thou hast redeemed out of Egypt?

Du har gjort ditt folk Israel til ditt folk for alltid, og du, Herre, ble deres Gud.

For thy people Israel didst thou make thine own people for ever; and thou, LORD, becamest their God.

Nå, Herre, la det som du har talt om din tjener og om hans hus bli grunnfested for alltid, og gjør som du har sagt.

Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.

Let it even be established, that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee.

For du, min Gud, har fortalt din tjener at du vil bygge ham et hus; derfor har din tjener funnet det i sitt hjerte å be for deg.

For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.

Nå, Herre, du er Gud, og du har lovet denne godhet til din tjener.

And now, LORD, thou art God, and hast promised this goodness unto thy servant:

La det derfor være din vilje å velsigne din tjeners hus, så det kan stå for alltid foran deg; for du velsigner, Herre, og det skal bli velsignet for alltid."

Now therefore let it please thee to bless the house of thy servant, that it may be before thee for ever: for thou blessest, O LORD, and it shall be blessed for ever.
