Satan reiste seg mot Israel og fristet David til å telle folket i Israel.

And Satan stood up against Israel, and provoked David to number Israel.

David sa til Joab og lederne i folket: Gå og tell Israel fra Beer-Seba til Dan; bring tallet til meg så jeg kan få vite det.

And David said to Joab and to the rulers of the people, Go, number Israel from Beer-sheba even to Dan; and bring the number of them to me, that I may know it.

Joab svarte: Måtte Herren gjøre sitt folk hundre ganger så mange som de er nå. Min herre kongen, er de ikke alle din herres tjenere? Hvorfor ønsker min herre dette? Hvorfor skal det føre til synd for Israel?

And Joab answered, The LORD make his people an hundred times so many more as they be: but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why then doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of trespass to Israel?

Men kongens ord stod fast mot Joab, så Joab dro av sted og gikk gjennom hele Israel, og kom tilbake til Jerusalem.

Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed, and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.

Joab ga David tallet på folket. Israel telte en million og hundre tusen menn som kunne trekke sverd, og Juda telte fire hundre og sytti tusen menn som kunne trekke sverd.

And Joab gave the sum of the number of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and an hundred thousand men that drew sword: and Judah was four hundred threescore and ten thousand men that drew sword.

Men Levi og Benjamin ble ikke talt med blant dem, for Joab fant kongens befaling avskyelig.

But Levi and Benjamin counted he not among them: for the king's word was abominable to Joab.

Gud var misfornøyd med dette, så han rammet Israel.

And God was displeased with this thing; therefore he smote Israel.

David sa til Gud: Jeg har syndet stort ved å gjøre dette. Likevel, jeg ber deg, fjern denne synden fra din tjener, for jeg har handlet meget uklokt.

And David said unto God, I have sinned greatly, because I have done this thing: but now, I beseech thee, do away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Herren talte til Gad, Davids seer, og sa:

And the LORD spake unto Gad, David's seer, saying,

Gå og si til David: Så sier Herren: Jeg gir deg tre valg; velg en av dem, så jeg kan utføre det mot deg.

Go and tell David, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things: choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Så kom Gad til David og sa til ham: Så sier Herren: Velg

So Gad came to David, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Choose thee

enten tre års hungersnød; eller tre måneder hvor du flykter for dine fiender mens de forfølger deg med sverd; eller tre dager med Herrens sverd, pest i landet, og Herrens engel som ødelegger over hele Israels land. Tenk nå over hva jeg skal svare ham som har sendt meg.

Either three years' famine; or three months to be destroyed before thy foes, while that the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even the pestilence, in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the coasts of Israel. Now therefore advise thyself what word I shall bring again to him that sent me.

David sa til Gad: Jeg er i stor nød; la meg falle i Herrens hånd, for hans barmhjertighet er stor. La meg ikke falle i menneskers hånd.

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let me fall now into the hand of the LORD; for very great are his mercies: but let me not fall into the hand of man.

Så sendte Herren pest over Israel, og sytti tusen menn i Israel døde.

So the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel: and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.

Gud sendte en engel til Jerusalem for å ødelegge det. Men mens han ødela, så Herren og angret seg på ulykken, og sa til engelen som ødela: Det er nok, hold tilbake hånden. Herrens engel stod da ved treskeplassen til Ornan jebusitten.

And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it: and as he was destroying, the LORD beheld, and he repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed, It is enough, stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD stood by the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David løftet blikket og så Herrens engel stå mellom jorden og himmelen med et sverd i hånden, utstrakt over Jerusalem. Da falt David og Israels eldste, kledd i botsklær, på sine ansikter.

And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD stand between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders of Israel, who were clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.

David sa til Gud: Var det ikke jeg som beordret tellingen av folket? Det er jeg som har syndet og gjort ondt; men disse, som er som får, hva har de gjort? Herre min Gud, la din hånd være på meg og min fars hus, men ikke på ditt folk så de blir rammet.

And David said unto God, Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done evil indeed; but as for these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be on me, and on my father's house; but not on thy people, that they should be plagued.

Da befalte Herrens engel Gad å si til David at han skulle dra opp og reise et alter for Herren på treskeplassen til Ornan jebusitten.

Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and set up an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.

David gikk opp i samsvar med Gads ord, slik det var sagt i Herrens navn.

And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spake in the name of the LORD.

Ornan snudde seg og så engelen; hans fire sønner som var med ham, gjemte seg. Ornan holdt på med å treske hvete.

And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.

Da David nærmet seg Ornan, så Ornan David, gikk ut fra treskeplassen og bøyde seg med ansiktet mot jorden for David.

And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshingfloor, and bowed himself to David with his face to the ground.

David sa til Ornan: Gi meg denne treskeplassen, så jeg kan bygge et alter for Herren her. Gi meg det for full pris, slik at plagen kan stanse blant folket.

Then David said to Ornan, Grant me the place of this threshingfloor, that I may build an altar therein unto the LORD: thou shalt grant it me for the full price: that the plague may be stayed from the people.

Ornan svarte David: Ta den, og la min herre kongen gjøre det som er godt i hans øyne. Jeg gir deg også oksene til brennoffer, treskeutstyret til ved, og hveten til matoffer; jeg gir alt.

And Ornan said unto David, Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes: lo, I give thee the oxen also for burnt offerings, and the threshing instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meat offering; I give it all.

Kong David sa til Ornan: Nei, men jeg vil kjøpe det for full pris, for jeg vil ikke ta det som er ditt til Herren, eller ofre brennoffer uten kostnad.

And king David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt offerings without cost.

Så ga David seks hundre sekel gull i vekt til Ornan for stedet.

So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.

David bygde der et alter for Herren og ofret brennoffer og fredsoffer, og kalte på Herren; og han svarte ham fra himmelen med ild på brennofferets alter.

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD; and he answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt offering.

Herren befalte engelen å sette sverdet tilbake i sliren.

And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.

På den tiden, da David så at Herren hadde svart ham på treskeplassen til Ornan jebusitten, ofret han der.

At that time when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.

For Herrens tabernakel, som Moses hadde laget i ørkenen, og brennofferets alter, var på den tiden på den høye plassen i Gibeon.

For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of the burnt offering, were at that season in the high place at Gibeon.

Men David kunne ikke gå dit for å søke Gud, for han var redd for Herrens engels sverd.

But David could not go before it to inquire of God: for he was afraid because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
