Rehabeam dro til Sikem, for hele Israel hadde kommet til Sikem for å gjøre ham til konge.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

Da Jeroboam, sønn av Nebat, som ennå var i Egypt, hørte om det (for han hadde flyktet fra kong Salomo og bodde i Egypt),

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelt in Egypt;)

sendte de bud etter ham. Og Jeroboam og hele Israels menighet kom og talte til Rehabeam og sa,

That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spake unto Rehoboam, saying,

Din far la en tung byrde på oss; gjør nå den tunge tjenesten fra din far og det tunge åket han la på oss lettere, så skal vi tjene deg.

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make thou the grievous service of thy father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.

Han svarte dem: Gå bort i tre dager, så kom tilbake til meg. Og folket gikk bort.

And he said unto them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

Kong Rehabeam rådførte seg med de gamle mennene som hadde tjent for hans far Salomo så lenge han levde, og spurte: Hva råder dere meg til å svare dette folket?

And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do ye advise that I may answer this people?

De sa til ham: Hvis du i dag vil tjene dette folket, svare dem og tale vennlige ord til dem, vil de være dine tjenere for alltid.

And they spake unto him, saying, If thou wilt be a servant unto this people this day, and wilt serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be thy servants for ever.

Men han forkastet de gamles råd, som de hadde gitt ham, og rådførte seg med de unge mennene som hadde vokst opp med ham og sto i hans tjeneste.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

Han spurte dem: Hva råder dere meg til å svare dette folket, som har sagt til meg: Gjør det åket din far la på oss, lettere?

And he said unto them, What counsel give ye that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which thy father did put upon us lighter?

De unge mennene som hadde vokst opp med ham, svarte: Slik skal du svare dette folket som har sagt til deg: Din far gjorde vårt åk tungt, men du kan gjøre det lettere for oss. Slik skal du si til dem: Min lillefinger er tykkere enn min fars midje.

And the young men that were grown up with him spake unto him, saying, Thus shalt thou speak unto this people that spake unto thee, saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, but make thou it lighter unto us; thus shalt thou say unto them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins.

Og nå, min far la et tungt åk på dere, men jeg vil gjøre deres åk enda tyngre. Min far tukte dere med pisker, men jeg vil tukte dere med skorpioner.

And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father hath chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Den tredje dagen kom Jeroboam og hele folket til Rehabeam, som kongen hadde sagt: Kom tilbake til meg den tredje dagen.

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

Kongen svarte folket hardt og forkastet det rådet de gamle mennene hadde gitt ham.

And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men's counsel that they gave him;

Han talte til dem etter de unge mennenes råd og sa: Min far gjorde deres åk tungt, men jeg vil gjøre det enda tyngre. Min far tukte dere med pisker, men jeg vil tukte dere med skorpioner.

And spake to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

Kongen lyttet ikke til folket, for dette var fra Herren, så han kunne oppfylle det ord Herrens hadde talt ved Ahia fra Sjilo til Jeroboam, sønn av Nebat.

Wherefore the king hearkened not unto the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spake by Ahijah the Shilonite unto Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Da hele Israel så at kongen ikke lyttet til dem, svarte folket ham: Hva del har vi i David? Vi har ingen arvedel i Isais sønn. Til teltene dine, Israel! Nå må du selv sørge for din egen husstand, David. Så dro Israel til sine telt.

So when all Israel saw that the king hearkened not unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to thine own house, David. So Israel departed unto their tents.

Men over Israels barn som bodde i Judas byer, hersket Rehabeam.

But as for the children of Israel which dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

Kong Rehabeam sendte Adoram, som hadde ansvaret for pliktarbeidet, men hele Israel steinet ham til døde. Da hastet kong Rehabeam opp i sin stridsvogn for å flykte til Jerusalem.

Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

Så gjorde Israel opprør mot Davids hus, som de gjør til denne dag.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day.

Da hele Israel hørte at Jeroboam hadde kommet tilbake, sendte de bud etter ham, kalte ham til menigheten og gjorde ham til konge over hele Israel. Det var ingen som fulgte Davids hus, unntatt Juda stamme alene.

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him unto the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

Da Rehabeam kom til Jerusalem, samlet han hele Juda hus og Benjamin-stammen, 180 000 utvalgte krigere, for å føre krig mot Israels hus og bringe riket tilbake til Rehabeam, Salomos sønn.

And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

Men Guds ord kom til Sjemaja, Guds mann, og sa:

But the word of God came unto Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

Si til Rehabeam, Salomos sønn, kongen av Juda, og til hele Judas hus og Benjamin og resten av folket,

Speak unto Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and unto all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

Så sier Herren: Dere skal ikke dra opp, og dere skal ikke kjempe mot deres brødre, Israels barn. Gå tilbake hver mann til sitt eget hus, for dette er fra meg. De hørte derfor på Herrens ord og vendte tilbake, slik Herren hadde sagt.

Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They hearkened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

Jeroboam bygde Sikem i Efraim-fjellet og bodde der. Derfra bygde han også Penuel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelt therein; and went out from thence, and built Penuel.

Jeroboam sa i sitt hjerte: Nå vil riket vende tilbake til Davids hus.

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

Hvis dette folket drar opp for å bære frem ofre i Herrens hus i Jerusalem, vil deres hjerter vende tilbake til deres herre, Rehabeam, kongen av Juda. De vil drepe meg og gå tilbake til Rehabeam, kongen av Juda.

If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again unto their lord, even unto Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

Derfor rådspurte kongen seg, laget to gullkalver og sa til folket: Det er for mye for dere å dra opp til Jerusalem. Se, Israel, disse gudene som førte dere opp fra Egypts land.

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said unto them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

Han satte den ene i Betel og den andre i Dan.

And he set the one in Beth-el, and the other put he in Dan.

Og dette ble årsak til synd, for folket dro til den ene, helt til Dan, for å tilbe.

And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even unto Dan.

Han laget også helligdommer på offerhaugene og laget prester av alle slags folk, som ikke var av Levis sønner.

And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

Jeroboam fastsatte også en høytid i den åttende måneden, på den femtende dagen i måneden, som høytiden i Juda, og han bar fram ofre på alteret. Slik gjorde han i Betel, han ofret til gullkalvene han hadde laget, og han satte prester for offerhaugene han hadde laget i Betel.

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like unto the feast that is in Judah, and he offered upon the altar. So did he in Beth-el, sacrificing unto the calves that he had made: and he placed in Beth-el the priests of the high places which he had made.

Han ofret på alteret som han hadde laget i Betel den femtende dagen i den åttende måneden, måneden han hadde funnet på selv. Han fastsatte en høytid for Israels barn og ofret på alteret og brente røkelse.

So he offered upon the altar which he had made in Beth-el the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast unto the children of Israel: and he offered upon the altar, and burnt incense.
