Og se, det kom en gudsmann fra Juda ved Herrens ord til Betel, mens Jeroboam sto ved alteret for å brenne røkelse.

And, behold, there came a man of God out of Judah by the word of the LORD unto Beth-el: and Jeroboam stood by the altar to burn incense.

Han ropte ut mot alteret med Herrens ord og sa: Alter, alter! Så sier Herren: Se, en sønn skal fødes i Davids hus, Josjia er hans navn. På deg skal han ofre de prestene fra offerhaugene som brenner røkelse på deg, og det skal brennes menneskeben på deg.

And he cried against the altar in the word of the LORD, and said, O altar, altar, thus saith the LORD; Behold, a child shall be born unto the house of David, Josiah by name; and upon thee shall he offer the priests of the high places that burn incense upon thee, and men's bones shall be burnt upon thee.

Og han ga et tegn samme dag og sa: Dette er tegnet som Herren har talt: Se, alteret skal revne, og asken som er på det skal spres ut.

And he gave a sign the same day, saying, This is the sign which the LORD hath spoken; Behold, the altar shall be rent, and the ashes that are upon it shall be poured out.

Da kong Jeroboam hørte utsagnet fra gudsmannen som han ropte mot alteret i Betel, rakte han ut hånden fra alteret og sa: Grip ham! Da tørket hånden han rakte ut mot ham inn, slik at han ikke kunne trekke den tilbake.

And it came to pass, when king Jeroboam heard the saying of the man of God, which had cried against the altar in Beth-el, that he put forth his hand from the altar, saying, Lay hold on him. And his hand, which he put forth against him, dried up, so that he could not pull it in again to him.

Alteret revnet også, og asken spredte seg fra alteret, i overensstemmelse med tegnet gudsmannen hadde gitt ved Herrens ord.

The altar also was rent, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the LORD.

Kongen svarte og sa til gudsmannen: Be til Herren din Gud for meg og be om at min hånd må bli helbredet. Og gudsmannen ba til Herren, og kongens hånd ble helbredet igjen og var som den var før.

And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. And the man of God besought the LORD, and the king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was before.

Da sa kongen til gudsmannen: Kom hjem til meg og styrk deg, så skal jeg gi deg en belønning.

And the king said unto the man of God, Come home with me, and refresh thyself, and I will give thee a reward.

Men gudsmannen svarte kongen: Om du så gir meg halve huset ditt, vil jeg ikke gå med deg, og jeg vil heller ikke spise brød eller drikke vann på dette stedet.

And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:

For slik har det blitt pålagt meg ved Herrens ord, at jeg ikke skal spise brød eller drikke vann, og heller ikke vende tilbake den veien jeg kom.

For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.

Så han tok en annen vei og vendte ikke tilbake den veien han kom til Betel.

So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Beth-el.

Nå bodde det en gammel profet i Betel, og hans sønner kom og fortalte ham om alle de gjerningene som gudsmannen hadde gjort den dagen i Betel; de gjenfortalte også de ordene han hadde sagt til kongen, til sin far.

Now there dwelt an old prophet in Beth-el; and his sons came and told him all the works that the man of God had done that day in Beth-el: the words which he had spoken unto the king, them they told also to their father.

Da sa faren til dem: Hvilken vei gikk han? For sønnene hans hadde sett hvilken vei gudsmannen gikk, han som kom fra Juda.

And their father said unto them, What way went he? For his sons had seen what way the man of God went, which came from Judah.

Så sa han til sine sønner: Sal meg eselet. Og de salet eselet til ham, og han red av gårde.

And he said unto his sons, Saddle me the ass. So they saddled him the ass: and he rode thereon,

Han dro etter gudsmannen og fant ham sittende under et eiketre og sa til ham: Er du gudsmannen som kom fra Juda? Han svarte: Ja, det er jeg.

And went after the man of God, and found him sitting under an oak: and he said unto him, Art thou the man of God that camest from Judah? And he said, I am.

Da sa han til ham: Kom hjem med meg og spis brød.

Then he said unto him, Come home with me, and eat bread.

Han svarte: Jeg kan ikke vende tilbake med deg eller gå inn med deg. Jeg vil ikke spise brød eller drikke vann med deg på dette stedet.

And he said, I may not return with thee, nor go in with thee: neither will I eat bread nor drink water with thee in this place:

For jeg har fått beskjed ved Herrens ord: Du skal verken spise brød eller drikke vann der, og ikke vende tilbake den veien du kom.

For it was said to me by the word of the LORD, Thou shalt eat no bread nor drink water there, nor turn again to go by the way that thou camest.

Da sa han til ham: Jeg er også en profet som du, og en engel talte til meg ved Herrens ord og sa: Ta ham med deg tilbake til ditt hus, så han kan spise brød og drikke vann. Men han løy for ham.

He said unto him, I am a prophet also as thou art; and an angel spake unto me by the word of the LORD, saying, Bring him back with thee into thine house, that he may eat bread and drink water. But he lied unto him.

Så han vendte tilbake med ham og spiste brød i huset hans og drakk vann.

So he went back with him, and did eat bread in his house, and drank water.

Mens de satt ved bordet, kom Herrens ord til profeten som hadde ført ham tilbake.

And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:

Og han ropte til gudsmannen som kom fra Juda: Så sier Herren: Fordi du har vært ulydig mot Herrens ord og ikke har holdt budet som Herren din Gud ga deg,

And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,

men vendte tilbake og spiste brød og drakk vann der hvor han sa til deg at du ikke skulle spise brød og ikke drikke vann, derfor skal ikke ditt legeme komme til dine fedres grav.

But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

Og etter at han hadde spist brød og drukket vann, salet han eselet for profeten som han hadde ført tilbake.

And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.

Da han dro av sted, møtte en løve ham på veien og drepte ham, og hans lik lå kastet på veien, mens eselet sto ved siden av det, og løven sto også ved liket.

And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.

Og se, noen menn gikk forbi og så liket liggende på veien og løven stående ved siden av liket, og de kom og fortalte det i byen hvor den gamle profeten bodde.

And, behold, men passed by, and saw the carcase cast in the way, and the lion standing by the carcase: and they came and told it in the city where the old prophet dwelt.

Da profeten som hadde ført ham tilbake fra veien hørte om det, sa han: Det er gudsmannen, som var ulydig mot Herrens ord. Derfor har Herren gitt ham over til løven, som har revet og drept ham i henhold til Herrens ord som han talte til ham.

And when the prophet that brought him back from the way heard thereof, he said, It is the man of God, who was disobedient unto the word of the LORD: therefore the LORD hath delivered him unto the lion, which hath torn him, and slain him, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake unto him.

Og han sa til sine sønner: Sal meg eselet. Og de salet det.

And he spake to his sons, saying, Saddle me the ass. And they saddled him.

Han dro ut og fant liket liggende på veien med eselet og løven stående ved siden av liket; løven hadde verken spist av liket eller revet eselet.

And he went and found his carcase cast in the way, and the ass and the lion standing by the carcase: the lion had not eaten the carcase, nor torn the ass.

Profeten tok liket av gudsmannen, la det på eselet og brakte det tilbake, og den gamle profeten kom til byen for å sørge over og begrave ham.

And the prophet took up the carcase of the man of God, and laid it upon the ass, and brought it back: and the old prophet came to the city, to mourn and to bury him.

Han la liket i sin egen grav, og de sørget over ham og sa: Å, min bror!

And he laid his carcase in his own grave; and they mourned over him, saying, Alas, my brother!

Etter at han hadde begravet ham, sa han til sine sønner: Når jeg dør, så begrav meg i graven der gudsmannen er begravet, legg mine ben ved siden av hans ben.

And it came to pass, after he had buried him, that he spake to his sons, saying, When I am dead, then bury me in the sepulchre wherein the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones:

For det ordet som han ropte ved Herrens ord mot alteret i Betel og mot alle husene på offerhaugene i Samarias byer, skal virkelig gå i oppfyllelse.

For the saying which he cried by the word of the LORD against the altar in Beth-el, and against all the houses of the high places which are in the cities of Samaria, shall surely come to pass.

Etter dette vendte ikke Jeroboam fra sin onde vei, men igjen laget han prester fra de laveste av folket for offerhaugene. Hver den som ønsket, innviet han, og han ble en av offerhaugenes prester.

After this thing Jeroboam returned not from his evil way, but made again of the lowest of the people priests of the high places: whosoever would, he consecrated him, and he became one of the priests of the high places.

Dette ble en synd for Jeroboams hus, for å utslette og ødelegge det fra jordens overflate.

And this thing became sin unto the house of Jeroboam, even to cut it off, and to destroy it from off the face of the earth.
