Elia fra Tisjbe, som bodde i Gilead, sa til Akab: Så sant Herren, Israels Gud, lever, han som jeg står foran, skal det ikke komme dugg eller regn i disse årene, uten på mitt ord.

And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.

Og Herrens ord kom til ham og sa:

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

Dra herfra, vend deg mot øst, og gjem deg ved bekken Krit, som er øst for Jordan.

Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

Der skal du drikke av bekken, og jeg har pålagt ravnene å sørge for mat til deg der.

And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.

Han dro avsted og gjorde som Herren hadde sagt. Han bodde ved bekken Krit, øst for Jordan.

So he went and did according unto the word of the LORD: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.

Og ravnene kom med brød og kjøtt om morgenen, og brød og kjøtt om kvelden, og han drakk av bekken.

And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.

Etter en tid tørket bekken inn, fordi det ikke var noe regn i landet.

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

Og Herrens ord kom til ham og sa:

And the word of the LORD came unto him, saying,

Stå opp og dra til Sarepta, som hører til Sidon, og bli der. Se, jeg har pålagt en enke der å gi deg mat.

Arise, get thee to Zarephath, which belongeth to Zidon, and dwell there: behold, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

Han reiste seg og dro til Sarepta. Da han kom til byporten, var det en enke der som samlet ved. Han kalte på henne og sa: Vær så snill og hent litt vann i en krukke, så jeg kan få drikke.

So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, the widow woman was there gathering of sticks: and he called to her, and said, Fetch me, I pray thee, a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.

Da hun gikk for å hente vannet, ropte han etter henne og sa: Vær så snill, bring meg også et stykke brød.

And as she was going to fetch it, he called to her, and said, Bring me, I pray thee, a morsel of bread in thine hand.

Hun svarte: Så sant Herren din Gud lever, har jeg ingen kake, bare en håndfull mel i en krukke og litt olje i en krukke. Nå samler jeg et par vedpinner for å gå hjem og lage det til meg og sønnen min, så vi kan spise det og deretter dø.

And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die.

Elia sa til henne: Frykt ikke! Gå og gjør som du har sagt, men lag først en liten kake til meg av det og bring den til meg, så kan du lage til deg selv og sønnen din etterpå.

And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son.

For slik sier Herren, Israels Gud: Melkrukken skal ikke bli tom og oljekrukken skal ikke mangle noe, helt til den dagen Herren sender regn på jorden.

For thus saith the LORD God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the LORD sendeth rain upon the earth.

Hun gikk og gjorde som Elia hadde sagt, og både hun, Elia og hennes hus spiste i mange dager.

And she went and did according to the saying of Elijah: and she, and he, and her house, did eat many days.

Melkrukken ble ikke tom, og oljekrukken manglet ikke noe, i samsvar med Herrens ord som han hadde talt gjennom Elia.

And the barrel of meal wasted not, neither did the cruse of oil fail, according to the word of the LORD, which he spake by Elijah.

En tid etter dette ble sønnen til kvinnen, husets herre, syk, og sykdommen ble så alvorlig at det ikke var livspust igjen i ham.

And it came to pass after these things, that the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, fell sick; and his sickness was so sore, that there was no breath left in him.

Da sa hun til Elia: Hva har jeg med deg å gjøre, du Guds mann? Har du kommet til meg for å minne meg om min synd og for å drepe sønnen min?

And she said unto Elijah, What have I to do with thee, O thou man of God? art thou come unto me to call my sin to remembrance, and to slay my son?

Han sa til henne: Gi meg sønnen din. Han tok ham fra fanget hennes, bar ham opp til rommet hvor han bodde, og la ham på sin egen seng.

And he said unto her, Give me thy son. And he took him out of her bosom, and carried him up into a loft, where he abode, and laid him upon his own bed.

Så ropte han til Herren og sa: Herre, min Gud, har du også ført ulykke over denne enken, hos hvem jeg bor, ved å ta livet av sønnen hennes?

And he cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, hast thou also brought evil upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?

Han strakte seg utover barnet tre ganger, ropte til Herren og sa: Herre, min Gud, ber jeg deg, la dette barnets sjel komme tilbake i ham!

And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the LORD, and said, O LORD my God, I pray thee, let this child's soul come into him again.

Herren hørte Elias bønn, sjelen kom tilbake i barnet, og han livnet til.

And the LORD heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.

Elia tok barnet, førte ham ned fra rommet og inn i huset, og ga ham til moren. Elia sa: Se, sønnen din lever!

And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.

Da sa kvinnen til Elia: Nå vet jeg at du er en Guds mann, og at Herrens ord i din munn er sannhet.

And the woman said to Elijah, Now by this I know that thou art a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in thy mouth is truth.
