Ahab fortalte Jezebel alt det Elia hadde gjort, og hvordan han hadde drept alle profetene med sverdet.

And Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had slain all the prophets with the sword.

Da sendte Jezebel en budbringer til Elia og sa: Må gudene gjøre mot meg, og enda mer, hvis jeg ikke gjør ditt liv som livet til en av dem innen i morgen på denne tid.

Then Jezebel sent a messenger unto Elijah, saying, So let the gods do to me, and more also, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by to morrow about this time.

Da Elia så dette, sto han opp og flyktet for sitt liv, og kom til Be’er-Sjeva i Juda, og lot sin tjener bli der.

And when he saw that, he arose, and went for his life, and came to Beer-sheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his servant there.

Men han selv gikk en dagsreise ut i ørkenen, og satte seg under en gyvelbusk. Der ba han om å få dø og sa: Nå er det nok, HERRE. Ta mitt liv, for jeg er ikke bedre enn mine fedre.

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a juniper tree: and he requested for himself that he might die; and said, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

Mens han lå og sov under gyvelbusken, rørte en engel ved ham og sa til ham: Stå opp og spis.

And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat.

Han så opp, og der ved hodet hans lå en kake bakt på varme steiner og en krukke med vann. Han spiste og drakk, og la seg ned igjen.

And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruse of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again.

HERRENS engel kom igjen en gang til, rørte ved ham og sa: Stå opp og spis, for veien er for lang for deg.

And the angel of the LORD came again the second time, and touched him, and said, Arise and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

Han sto opp, spiste og drakk, og med styrken fra det måltidet gikk han i førti dager og førti netter til Guds fjell Horeb.

And he arose, and did eat and drink, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

Der gikk han inn i en hule og ble der over natten. Da kom HERRENS ord til ham, og han sa til ham: Hva gjør du her, Elia?

And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Han svarte: Jeg har vært meget nidkjær for HERREN, hærskarenes Gud. For Israels barn har forlatt din pakt, revet ned dine altere og drept dine profeter med sverdet. Jeg er alene igjen, og nå søker de å ta mitt liv også.

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: for the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

Han sa: Gå ut og stå på fjellet foran HERREN. Og se, HERREN gikk forbi, og en stor og sterk vind rev fjellene i stykker og brøt klippene i stykker foran HERREN; men HERREN var ikke i vinden. Etter vinden kom et jordskjelv, men HERREN var ikke i jordskjelvet.

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:

Etter jordskjelvet kom det en ild, men HERREN var ikke i ilden. Etter ilden kom det en stille, lav stemme.

And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.

Da Elia hørte det, dekket han ansiktet med kappen sin, gikk ut og sto ved inngangen til hulen. Da kom en stemme til ham og sa: Hva gjør du her, Elia?

And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Han svarte: Jeg har vært meget nidkjær for HERREN, hærskarenes Gud, fordi Israels barn har forlatt din pakt, revet ned dine altere, og drept dine profeter med sverdet. Jeg er alene igjen, og nå søker de å ta mitt liv også.

And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

HERREN sa til ham: Gå tilbake gjennom ørkenen til Damaskus, og når du kommer dit, så salv Hazael til konge over Syria.

And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

Jehu, sønn av Nimsji, skal du salve til konge over Israel, og Elisa, sønn av Safat fra Abel-Mehola, skal du salve til profet i ditt sted.

And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

Den som slipper unna Hazaels sverd, skal Jehu drepe; og den som slipper unna Jehus sverd, skal Elisa drepe.

And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

Men jeg vil etterlate meg sju tusen i Israel, alle de knær som ikke har bøyd seg for Baal, og hver munn som ikke har kysset ham.

Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Han gikk derfra og fant Elisa, sønn av Safat, som pløyde med tolv par okser foran seg, og han var med det tolvte paret. Elia gikk forbi ham og kastet kappen sin på ham.

So he departed thence, and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, who was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth: and Elijah passed by him, and cast his mantle upon him.

Da forlot Elisa oksene og løp etter Elia og sa: La meg få kysse min far og min mor, så skal jeg følge deg. Elia sa til ham: Gå tilbake, for hva har jeg gjort mot deg?

And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kiss my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he said unto him, Go back again: for what have I done to thee?

Han gikk tilbake fra ham og tok et par okser, slaktet dem og kokte kjøttet ved hjelp av redskapene fra oksene. Han ga det til folket, og de spiste. Deretter sto han opp, fulgte Elia og tjente ham.

And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and slew them, and boiled their flesh with the instruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arose, and went after Elijah, and ministered unto him.
