Så tok Samuel en flaske med olje og helte det over hodet hans, kysset ham og sa: «Er det ikke fordi Herren har salvet deg til å være leder over sin arv?»

Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

Når du i dag går fra meg, vil du finne to menn ved Rakels grav på Benjamins grense ved Zelzah. De vil si til deg: Eselhoppene du dro for å lete etter er funnet, men din far har nå sluttet å bry seg om eslene og bekymrer seg for deg og lurer på hva han skal gjøre for sin sønn.

When thou art departed from me to day, then thou shalt find two men by Rachel's sepulchre in the border of Benjamin at Zelzah; and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found: and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

Deretter skal du dra videre derfra til taborsletten, og der vil du møte tre menn på vei opp til Gud i Betel. Den ene vil bære tre kje, en annen tre brød, og enda en vil bære en flaske med vin.

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Beth-el, one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine:

De vil hilse på deg og gi deg to brød, som du skal ta imot fra dem.

And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

Etter dette skal du komme til Guds høyde, der filisternes garnison er. Når du kommer dit til byen, vil du møte en gruppe profeter som kommer ned fra offerplassen, med harpe, tamburin, fløyte og sitar foran seg, og de vil profetere.

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, where is the garrison of the Philistines: and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them; and they shall prophesy:

Da vil Herrens Ånd komme over deg, og du skal profetere sammen med dem og bli forvandlet til en annen mann.

And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them, and shalt be turned into another man.

Når disse tegnene skjer for deg, skal du gjøre det som anledningen krever, for Gud er med deg.

And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

Du skal gå foran meg til Gilgal, og se, jeg vil komme ned til deg for å ofre brennoffer og fredsoffer. Du skal vente i syv dager til jeg kommer til deg og sier hva du skal gjøre.

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold, I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings: seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and shew thee what thou shalt do.

Da han snudde seg for å gå fra Samuel, ga Gud ham et nytt hjerte, og alle disse tegnene gikk i oppfyllelse den dagen.

And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart: and all those signs came to pass that day.

Da de kom dit til høyden, møtte han en gruppe profeter; og Guds Ånd kom over ham, og han profeterte sammen med dem.

And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

Da alle som kjente ham fra før så at han profeterte blant profetene, sa folket til hverandre: «Hva har skjedd med Kisj’ sønn? Er Saul også blant profetene?»

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?

Og en fra samme sted svarte og sa: «Men hvem er deres far?» Derfor ble det et ordspråk: «Er Saul også blant profetene?»

And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father? Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

Da han var ferdig med å profetere, dro han opp til offerstedet.

And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

Sauls onkel spurte ham og tjeneren hans: «Hvor dro dere?» Og han svarte: «For å lete etter eslene, og da vi så at de ikke var der, dro vi til Samuel.»

And Saul's uncle said unto him and to his servant, Whither went ye? And he said, To seek the asses: and when we saw that they were no where, we came to Samuel.

Da sa Sauls onkel: «Fortell meg, vær så snill, hva sa Samuel til dere?»

And Saul's uncle said, Tell me, I pray thee, what Samuel said unto you.

Saul svarte sin onkel: «Han fortalte oss tydelig at eslene var funnet.» Men han sa ingenting om kongedømmet, som Samuel hadde nevnt.

And Saul said unto his uncle, He told us plainly that the asses were found. But of the matter of the kingdom, whereof Samuel spake, he told him not.

Så kalte Samuel folket sammen til Herren i Mispa.

And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh;

Og han sa til Israels barn: «Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg førte Israel opp fra Egypt og reddet dere fra egypterne og fra alle kongerikene som undertrykte dere.

And said unto the children of Israel, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all kingdoms, and of them that oppressed you:

Men i dag har dere forkastet deres Gud, som selv har frelst dere fra alle deres prøvelser og trengsler. Dere har sagt til ham: Nei, men sett en konge over oss. Nå still dere fram for Herren etter deres stammer og etter deres tusener.»

And ye have this day rejected your God, who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations; and ye have said unto him, Nay, but set a king over us. Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes, and by your thousands.

Da Samuel lot alle Israels stammer komme nær, ble Benjamins stamme valgt ut.

And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near, the tribe of Benjamin was taken.

Så lot han Benjamins stamme komme nær etter deres familier, og Matris familie ble valgt ut, og Saul, sønn av Kisj, ble valgt. Men da de lette etter ham, kunne han ikke finnes.

When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families, the family of Matri was taken, and Saul the son of Kish was taken: and when they sought him, he could not be found.

Derfor spurte de Herren videre, om mannen skulle komme dit. Herren svarte: «Se, han har gjemt seg blant bagasjen.»

Therefore they inquired of the LORD further, if the man should yet come thither. And the LORD answered, Behold, he hath hid himself among the stuff.

De løp og hentet ham derfra. Da han stod blant folket, var han høyere enn noen av folket fra skuldrene og opp.

And they ran and fetched him thence: and when he stood among the people, he was higher than any of the people from his shoulders and upward.

Samuel sa til folket: «Ser dere han som Herren har utvalgt? Det er ingen som han blant hele folket.» Og alle ropte og sa: «Gud bevare kongen!»

And Samuel said to all the people, See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen, that there is none like him among all the people? And all the people shouted, and said, God save the king.

Så fortalte Samuel folket om kongedømmets regler, skrev det ned i en bok og la det frem for Herren. Samuel sendte så folket hjem, hver til sitt hus.

Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom, and wrote it in a book, and laid it up before the LORD. And Samuel sent all the people away, every man to his house.

Saul dro også hjem til Gibea, og en flokk modige menn, som Gud hadde rørt ved hjertet, fulgte ham.

And Saul also went home to Gibeah; and there went with him a band of men, whose hearts God had touched.

Men noen ugudelige menn sa: «Hvordan skal denne mannen frelse oss?» De foraktet ham og bragte ham ingen gaver, men han lot som ingenting.

But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought him no presents. But he held his peace.
