Samuel sa også til Saul: Herren har sendt meg for å salve deg til konge over sitt folk, over Israel. Lytt nå til Herrens ord.

Samuel also said unto Saul, The LORD sent me to anoint thee to be king over his people, over Israel: now therefore hearken thou unto the voice of the words of the LORD.

Så sier Herren, hærskarenes Gud: Jeg husker hva Amalek gjorde mot Israel, hvordan de la seg i bakhold for dem på veien, da de kom opp fra Egypt.

Thus saith the LORD of hosts, I remember that which Amalek did to Israel, how he laid wait for him in the way, when he came up from Egypt.

Gå nå og slå Amalek, og ødelegg fullstendig alt de har. Skån dem ikke, men drep både mann og kvinne, spedbarn og småbarn, okse og sau, kamel og esel.

Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

Saul samlet folket og talte dem opp i Telaim, to hundre tusen fotsoldater, og ti tusen menn fra Juda.

And Saul gathered the people together, and numbered them in Telaim, two hundred thousand footmen, and ten thousand men of Judah.

Saul kom til en by i Amalek og la seg i bakhold i dalen.

And Saul came to a city of Amalek, and laid wait in the valley.

Og Saul sa til kenittene: Gå, dra bort, skill dere fra amalekittene, så jeg ikke ødelegger dere sammen med dem. For dere viste vennlighet mot alle Israels barn da de kom opp fra Egypt. Så kenittene dro bort fra blant amalekittene.

And Saul said unto the Kenites, Go, depart, get you down from among the Amalekites, lest I destroy you with them: for ye shewed kindness to all the children of Israel, when they came up out of Egypt. So the Kenites departed from among the Amalekites.

Saul slo amalekittene fra Havilah til du kommer til Shur, som ligger mot Egypt.

And Saul smote the Amalekites from Havilah until thou comest to Shur, that is over against Egypt.

Og han tok Agag, amalekittenes konge, levende, og fullstendig ødela alt folket med sverdets egg.

And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive, and utterly destroyed all the people with the edge of the sword.

Men Saul og folket sparte Agag og det beste av sauene, oksene, de fete dyrene, lammene og alt som var godt, og ville ikke fullstendig ødelegge det. Men alt som var verdiløst og ubrukelig, det ødela de fullstendig.

But Saul and the people spared Agag, and the best of the sheep, and of the oxen, and of the fatlings, and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them: but every thing that was vile and refuse, that they destroyed utterly.

Da kom Herrens ord til Samuel og sa:

Then came the word of the LORD unto Samuel, saying,

Jeg angrer at jeg gjorde Saul til konge, for han har vendt seg bort fra meg og ikke utført mine bud. Samuel ble bedrøvet, og han ropte til Herren hele natten.

It repenteth me that I have set up Saul to be king: for he is turned back from following me, and hath not performed my commandments. And it grieved Samuel; and he cried unto the LORD all night.

Da Samuel sto opp tidlig for å møte Saul om morgenen, ble han fortalt: Saul kom til Karmel, og se, han har reist seg en minnestøtte der, og har gått videre, og gått ned til Gilgal.

And when Samuel rose early to meet Saul in the morning, it was told Samuel, saying, Saul came to Carmel, and, behold, he set him up a place, and is gone about, and passed on, and gone down to Gilgal.

Da Samuel kom til Saul, sa Saul til ham: Velsignet være du av Herren: Jeg har utført Herrens bud.

And Samuel came to Saul: and Saul said unto him, Blessed be thou of the LORD: I have performed the commandment of the LORD.

Men Samuel sa: Hva er så denne lyden av sauer i mine ører, og lyden av oksene som jeg hører?

And Samuel said, What meaneth then this bleating of the sheep in mine ears, and the lowing of the oxen which I hear?

Saul sa: De har brakt dem fra amalekittene, for folket sparte det beste av sauene og oksene for å ofre til Herren din Gud; og det øvrige har vi fullstendig ødelagt.

And Saul said, They have brought them from the Amalekites: for the people spared the best of the sheep and of the oxen, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God; and the rest we have utterly destroyed.

Da sa Samuel til Saul: Bli her, så skal jeg fortelle deg hva Herren sa til meg i natt. Og han sa til ham: Tal.

Then Samuel said unto Saul, Stay, and I will tell thee what the LORD hath said to me this night. And he said unto him, Say on.

Samuel sa: Da du var liten i dine egne øyne, ble du ikke gjort til overhode for Israels stammer, og Herren salvet deg til konge over Israel?

And Samuel said, When thou wast little in thine own sight, wast thou not made the head of the tribes of Israel, and the LORD anointed thee king over Israel?

Herren sendte deg av sted og sa: Gå og fullstendig ødelegg synderne, amalekittene, og kjemp mot dem til de er utslettet.

And the LORD sent thee on a journey, and said, Go and utterly destroy the sinners the Amalekites, and fight against them until they be consumed.

Hvorfor adlød du da ikke Herrens stemme, men kastet deg over byttet, og gjorde det som er ondt i Herrens øyne?

Wherefore then didst thou not obey the voice of the LORD, but didst fly upon the spoil, and didst evil in the sight of the LORD?

Saul sa til Samuel: Ja, jeg har adlydt Herrens røst, og gått den vei Herren sendte meg, og jeg har brakt Agag, amalekittenes konge, og fullstendig ødelagt amalekittene.

And Saul said unto Samuel, Yea, I have obeyed the voice of the LORD, and have gone the way which the LORD sent me, and have brought Agag the king of Amalek, and have utterly destroyed the Amalekites.

Men folket tok av byttet, sauer og okser, det beste av det som skulle ha vært fullstendig ødelagt, for å ofre til Herren din Gud i Gilgal.

But the people took of the spoil, sheep and oxen, the chief of the things which should have been utterly destroyed, to sacrifice unto the LORD thy God in Gilgal.

Samuel sa: Har Herren like stor glede i brennoffer og slaktoffer, som i å adlyde Herrens røst? Se, lydighet er bedre enn offer, og å lytte er bedre enn fettet av værer.

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

For opprør er som trolldomssynd, og trass er som ondskap og avgudsdyrkelse. Fordi du har forkastet Herrens ord, har han også forkastet deg som konge.

For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.

Saul sa til Samuel: Jeg har syndet, for jeg har brutt Herrens bud og dine ord, fordi jeg fryktet folket og adlød deres røst.

And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

Jeg ber deg nå, tilgi min synd, og vend tilbake med meg, så jeg kan tilbe Herren.

Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD.

Men Samuel sa til Saul: Jeg vil ikke vende tilbake med deg, for du har forkastet Herrens ord, og Herren har forkastet deg som konge over Israel.

And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

Da Samuel snudde seg for å gå bort, grep han tak i kanten av kappen hans, og den revnet.

And as Samuel turned about to go away, he laid hold upon the skirt of his mantle, and it rent.

Samuel sa til ham: Herren har revet Israels kongedømme fra deg i dag, og gitt det til en av dine naboer som er bedre enn deg.

And Samuel said unto him, The LORD hath rent the kingdom of Israel from thee this day, and hath given it to a neighbour of thine, that is better than thou.

Og Israels styrke lyver ikke og angrer ikke; for han er ikke et menneske, så han skulle angre.

And also the Strength of Israel will not lie nor repent: for he is not a man, that he should repent.

Da sa han: Jeg har syndet; likevel ære meg nå, jeg ber deg, foran mine folk eldste og foran Israel, og vend tilbake med meg, så jeg kan tilbe Herren din Gud.

Then he said, I have sinned: yet honour me now, I pray thee, before the elders of my people, and before Israel, and turn again with me, that I may worship the LORD thy God.

Så vendte Samuel tilbake etter Saul, og Saul tilba Herren.

So Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul worshipped the LORD.

Da sa Samuel: Bring hit til meg Agag, amalekittenes konge. Og Agag kom til ham med frykt, og Agag sa: Visst er bitterheten av døden forbi.

Then said Samuel, Bring ye hither to me Agag the king of the Amalekites. And Agag came unto him delicately. And Agag said, Surely the bitterness of death is past.

Samuel sa: Som ditt sverd har gjort kvinner barnløse, slik skal din mor bli barnløs blant kvinner. Og Samuel hogget Agag i stykker for Herrens ansikt i Gilgal.

And Samuel said, As thy sword hath made women childless, so shall thy mother be childless among women. And Samuel hewed Agag in pieces before the LORD in Gilgal.

Samuel dro til Rama, og Saul dro opp til sitt hus i Sauls Gibea.

Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up to his house to Gibeah of Saul.

Samuel kom ikke mer for å se Saul til dagen han døde; men Samuel sørget over Saul, og Herren angret at han hadde gjort Saul til konge over Israel.

And Samuel came no more to see Saul until the day of his death: nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the LORD repented that he had made Saul king over Israel.
