Og Hanna ba og sa: Mitt hjerte gleder seg i Herren, mitt horn er løftet opp i Herren; min munn er vidåpen mot mine fiender, fordi jeg gleder meg i din frelse.

And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.

Det er ingen hellig som Herren; det finnes ingen ved siden av deg; det finnes heller ingen klippe som vår Gud.

There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

Snakk ikke lenger så stolte ord; la ikke arroganse komme ut av din munn, for Herren er en Gud som vet alt, og av ham blir handlinger vurdert.

Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

De mektiges buer er brutt, og de som snublet er beltet med styrke.

The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

De som var mette har leid seg ut for brød, og de som var sultne har sluttet å sulte; slik har den barnløse fått syv, og hun som hadde mange barn er blitt svak.

They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

Herren dreper og gjør levende; han fører ned til graven og opp igjen.

The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

Herren gjør fattig og rik; han ydmyker og løfter opp.

The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

Han reiser opp den fattige av støvet, og løfter den fattige fra asken, for å sette dem blant fyrster og gi dem herlighetens trone i arv. For jordens søyler er Herrens, og han har grunnlagt verden på dem.

He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD'S, and he hath set the world upon them.

Han vil holde sine helliges føtter trygge, men de onde skal gå tause i mørket; for ved styrke skal ingen mennesker seire.

He will keep the feet of his saints, and the wicked shall be silent in darkness; for by strength shall no man prevail.

Herrens fiender skal knuses; fra himmelen skal han tordne mot dem; Herren skal dømme jordens ender, og han skal gi styrke til sin konge og løfte opp sitt salvede horn.

The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.

Og Elkanah dro til sitt hus i Rama. Men barnet tjente Herren for presten Eli.

And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto the LORD before Eli the priest.

Men Elis sønner var onde menn; de kjente ikke Herren.

Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.

Og prestenes skikk med folket var at når noen ofret et offer, kom prestenes tjener mens kjøttet kokte, med en kjøttkrok med tre tenner i hånden.

And the priests' custom with the people was, that, when any man offered sacrifice, the priest's servant came, while the flesh was in seething, with a fleshhook of three teeth in his hand;

Og han stakk den i kjelen, eller gryten, eller karret, eller potten; alt kjøttkroken dro opp, tok presten for seg selv. Slik gjorde de i Shilo mot alle israelittene som kom dit.

And he struck it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fleshhook brought up the priest took for himself. So they did in Shiloh unto all the Israelites that came thither.

Før de brente fettet, kom prestenes tjener og sa til den som ofret: Gi kjøtt til presten for å steke det, for han vil ikke ha kokt kjøtt fra deg, men rått.

Also before they burnt the fat, the priest's servant came, and said to the man that sacrificed, Give flesh to roast for the priest; for he will not have sodden flesh of thee, but raw.

Og hvis noen sa til ham: La dem først brenne fettet, og så kan du ta det du ønsker; da ville han svare ham: Nei, men du skal gi det til meg nå, ellers tar jeg det med makt.

And if any man said unto him, Let them not fail to burn the fat presently, and then take as much as thy soul desireth; then he would answer him, Nay; but thou shalt give it me now: and if not, I will take it by force.

Derfor var de unge menns synd veldig stor for Herren, for de foraktet Herrens offer.

Wherefore the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

Men Samuel tjente Herren, selv som barn, iført en linfolde.

But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod.

Hans mor laget også en liten kappe til ham, og hun brakte den til ham hvert år når hun dro opp med sin mann for å gi det årlige offeret.

Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

Og Eli velsignet Elkanah og hans kone, og sa: Måtte Herren gi deg avkom fra denne kvinnen for dette lån som er gitt til Herren. Og de dro hjem.

And Eli blessed Elkanah and his wife, and said, The LORD give thee seed of this woman for the loan which is lent to the LORD. And they went unto their own home.

Og Herren besøkte Hanna, slik at hun unnfanget og fødte tre sønner og to døtre. Og barnet Samuel vokste opp for Herren.

And the LORD visited Hannah, so that she conceived, and bare three sons and two daughters. And the child Samuel grew before the LORD.

Nå var Eli veldig gammel, og han hørte om alt det hans sønner gjorde mot hele Israel, og hvordan de lå med kvinnene som samlet seg ved inngangen til møteteltet.

Now Eli was very old, and heard all that his sons did unto all Israel; and how they lay with the women that assembled at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.

Og han sa til dem: Hvorfor gjør dere slike ting? For jeg hører fra hele folket om deres onde handlinger.

And he said unto them, Why do ye such things? for I hear of your evil dealings by all this people.

Nei, mine sønner; for det er ikke et godt rykte jeg hører: dere får Herrens folk til å synde.

Nay, my sons; for it is no good report that I hear: ye make the LORD'S people to transgress.

Om en mann synder mot en annen, vil dommeren dømme ham; men om en mann synder mot Herren, hvem skal da be for ham? Men de lyttet ikke til sin fars advarsler, for Herren hadde besluttet å drepe dem.

If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall intreat for him? Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

Og gutten Samuel vokste og var til glede både for Herren og for mennesker.

And the child Samuel grew on, and was in favour both with the LORD, and also with men.

Og så kom det en Guds mann til Eli og sa til ham: Så sier Herren: Åpenbarte jeg meg ikke tydelig for din fars hus da de var i Egypt i faraos hus?

And there came a man of God unto Eli, and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Did I plainly appear unto the house of thy father, when they were in Egypt in Pharaoh's house?

Og valgte jeg ham ikke ut av alle Israels stammer til å være min prest, til å ofre på mitt alter, til å brenne røkelse, til å bære en efod foran meg? Og ga jeg ikke din fars hus alle Israels barns ildofre?

And did I choose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to offer upon mine altar, to burn incense, to wear an ephod before me? and did I give unto the house of thy father all the offerings made by fire of the children of Israel?

Hvorfor trår dere da på mitt offer og på min gave, som jeg har befalt i min bolig, og hedrer dine sønner mer enn meg, for å gjøre dere fete med det beste av alle mitt folks Israels offergaver?

Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

Derfor sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg sa virkelig at ditt hus og din fars hus skulle vandre foran meg for evig, men nå sier Herren: Langt fra det; for dem som ærer meg vil jeg ære, og de som forakter meg skal bli foraktet.

Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

Se, tiden kommer da jeg vil kutte av din arm og din fars hus, slik at det ikke skal være en gammel mann i ditt hus.

Behold, the days come, that I will cut off thine arm, and the arm of thy father's house, that there shall not be an old man in thine house.

Og du skal se en fiende i min bolig i all rikdommen Gud vil gi Israel, og det skal ikke være en gammel mann i ditt hus for alltid.

And thou shalt see an enemy in my habitation, in all the wealth which God shall give Israel: and there shall not be an old man in thine house for ever.

Og den av dine som jeg ikke kutter av fra mitt alter, skal forbruke dine øyne og sørge ditt hjerte, og alle de som vokser opp av ditt hus, skal dø i sin ungdom.

And the man of thine, whom I shall not cut off from mine altar, shall be to consume thine eyes, and to grieve thine heart: and all the increase of thine house shall die in the flower of their age.

Og dette skal være tegnet for deg, som skal komme over dine to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas: de skal begge dø på en dag.

And this shall be a sign unto thee, that shall come upon thy two sons, on Hophni and Phinehas; in one day they shall die both of them.

Og jeg vil reise opp en trofast prest for meg selv, som skal gjøre i samsvar med hva som er i mitt hjerte og i mitt sinn, og jeg vil bygge ham et sikkert hus, og han skal alltid vandre for min salvede.

And I will raise me up a faithful priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever.

Og det skal skje at alle som blir igjen i ditt hus, skal komme og bøye seg for ham for et stykke sølv og en bit brød, og si: Vennligst sett meg inn i en av prestens embeter, så jeg kan spise en bit brød.

And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left in thine house shall come and crouch to him for a piece of silver and a morsel of bread, and shall say, Put me, I pray thee, into one of the priests' offices, that I may eat a piece of bread.
