Og Samuels ord kom til hele Israel. Nå dro Israel ut for å kjempe mot filisterne, og de slo leir ved Eben-Eser, mens filisterne slo leir ved Afek.

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out against the Philistines to battle, and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistines pitched in Aphek.

Filisterne stilte seg opp i slagordning mot Israel, og da slaget begynte, ble Israel slått av filisterne. De drepte omtrent fire tusen menn fra hæren på marken.

And the Philistines put themselves in array against Israel: and when they joined battle, Israel was smitten before the Philistines: and they slew of the army in the field about four thousand men.

Da folket kom tilbake til leiren, sa Israels eldste: Hvorfor har Herren latt oss bli slått av filisterne i dag? La oss hente Herrens paktsark fra Sjilo til oss, så den kan redde oss fra våre fienders hånd.

And when the people were come into the camp, the elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us to day before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.

Det sendte folket for å hente paktsarken fra Sjilo, Herrens, hærskarenes Guds ark, som troner mellom kjerubene. Elis to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, var der med Guds paktsark.

So the people sent to Shiloh, that they might bring from thence the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth between the cherubims: and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.

Da Herrens paktsark kom til leiren, jublet hele Israel høyt, så jorden ristet.

And when the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel shouted with a great shout, so that the earth rang again.

Da filisterne hørte lyden av jubelropet, sa de: Hva betyr lyden av dette store jubelropet i hebreernes leir? Da forstod de at Herrens ark var kommet inn i leiren.

And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shout, they said, What meaneth the noise of this great shout in the camp of the Hebrews? And they understood that the ark of the LORD was come into the camp.

Filisterne ble redde, for de sa: Gud er kommet til leiren. Og de sa: Ve oss! For noe slikt har aldri hendt før.

And the Philistines were afraid, for they said, God is come into the camp. And they said, Woe unto us! for there hath not been such a thing heretofore.

Ve oss! Hvem skal redde oss fra hendene til disse mektige gudene? Dette er de gudene som slo egypterne med alle plagene i ørkenen.

Woe unto us! who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wilderness.

Vær modige og vær menn, dere filistere, så dere ikke blir treller for hebreerne, slik de har vært for dere. Vær menn og kjemp!

Be strong, and quit yourselves like men, O ye Philistines, that ye be not servants unto the Hebrews, as they have been to you: quit yourselves like men, and fight.

Filisterne kjempet, og Israel ble slått, og de flyktet hver til sitt telt. Det ble en stor massakre, for tretti tusen fotsoldater fra Israel falt.

And the Philistines fought, and Israel was smitten, and they fled every man into his tent: and there was a very great slaughter; for there fell of Israel thirty thousand footmen.

Guds ark ble tatt, og Elis to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, ble drept.

And the ark of God was taken; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were slain.

En mann fra Benjamin løp fra hæren og kom til Sjilo samme dag med klærne revet i stykker og jord på hodet.

And there ran a man of Benjamin out of the army, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and with earth upon his head.

Da han kom, satt Eli på en stol ved veien og ventet, for hjertet hans skalv for Guds ark. Da mannen kom inn i byen og fortalte det, skrek hele byen.

And when he came, lo, Eli sat upon a seat by the wayside watching: for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

Da Eli hørte lyden av skrikene, sa han: Hva betyr lyden av dette oppstyret? Mannen kom fort inn og fortalte Eli.

And when Eli heard the noise of the crying, he said, What meaneth the noise of this tumult? And the man came in hastily, and told Eli.

Eli var nå nittifem år gammel, og øynene hans var svekket, slik at han ikke kunne se.

Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see.

Mannen sa til Eli: Jeg er den som kom fra hæren, og jeg flyktet i dag fra hæren. Eli sa: Hva har skjedd, min sønn?

And the man said unto Eli, I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

Budbringeren svarte og sa: Israel har flyktet for filisterne, og det har vært en stor massakre blant folket. Dine to sønner, Hofni og Pinehas, er også døde, og Guds ark er tatt.

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people, and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken.

Da han nevnte Guds ark, falt Eli bakover fra stolen ved porten og brakk nakken og døde, for han var en gammel mann og tung. Han hadde dømt Israel i førti år.

And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that he fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

Hans svigerdatter, Pinehas' kone, var gravid og nær fødsel. Da hun hørte nyheten om at Guds ark var tatt, og at hennes svigerfar og ektemann var døde, svaiet hun sammen og fødte, for fødselsriene kom over henne.

And his daughter in law, Phinehas' wife, was with child, near to be delivered: and when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was taken, and that her father in law and her husband were dead, she bowed herself and travailed; for her pains came upon her.

Omtrent da hun døde, sa kvinnene som sto ved henne: Frykt ikke, for du har født en sønn. Men hun svarte ikke, og brydde seg ikke om det.

And about the time of her death the women that stood by her said unto her, Fear not; for thou hast born a son. But she answered not, neither did she regard it.

Hun kalte barnet I-kabod og sa: Herligheten er borte fra Israel på grunn av at Guds ark var tatt, og på grunn av hennes svigerfar og ektemann.

And she named the child I-chabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel: because the ark of God was taken, and because of her father in law and her husband.

Hun sa: Herligheten er borte fra Israel, for Guds ark er tatt.

And she said, The glory is departed from Israel: for the ark of God is taken.
