Det var en mann fra Benjamin som het Kisj, sønn av Abiel, sønn av Seror, sønn av Bekorat, sønn av Afia, en benjaminit, en mektig mann med innflytelse.

Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power.

Han hadde en sønn som het Saul, en flott ung mann, og det var ingen blant Israels barn som var bedre enn ham. Han var høyere enn noen av folket fra skuldrene og opp.

And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people.

Eslene til faren hans, Kisj, hadde gått seg bort. Kisj sa da til sønnen Saul: Ta med en av tjenerne og dra av sted for å lete etter eslene.

And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses.

De dro gjennom Efraims fjellområde og videre gjennom landet Sjalisja, men fant dem ikke. Så dro de gjennom landet Shalim, uten å finne dem der heller, og gjennom benjaminittenes land, men heller ikke der fant de dem.

And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not.

Da de kom til landet Suf, sa Saul til tjeneren som var med ham: Kom, la oss vende tilbake, så ikke far slutter å bry seg om eslene og i stedet begynner å engste seg for oss.

And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us.

Men tjeneren sa til ham: Se, det er en Guds mann i denne byen, en som er aktet høyt. Alt han sier går i oppfyllelse. La oss gå dit; kanskje han kan vise oss veien vi bør ta.

And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go.

Saul svarte da tjeneren: Men hvis vi går, hva skal vi bringe til mannen? Brødet i sekkene er oppbrukt, og vi har ingen gave å gi til Guds mann. Hva har vi?

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

Tjeneren svarte igjen og sa: Se, jeg har den fjerde delen av en sjekel i sølv. Den vil jeg gi til Guds mann for å vise oss veien.

And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way.

(Tidligere i Israel, når noen gikk for å spørre Herren til råds, sa de: Kom, la oss gå til seeren; for den som nå kalles profet, ble før kalt seer.)

(Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.)

Da sa Saul til tjeneren sin: Det er godt sagt; kom, la oss gå. Så gikk de til byen der Guds mann var.

Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was.

Mens de gikk opp mot byen, møtte de unge kvinner som var ute for å hente vann, og spurte dem: Er seeren her?

And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?

De svarte: Ja, han er rett foran dere. Skynd dere nå, for han kom til byen i dag, for det skal være et offer for folket på høyden i dag.

And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place:

Når dere kommer inn i byen, vil dere straks finne ham, før han går opp på høyden for å spise. Folket vil ikke spise før han kommer, for han skal velsigne offeret. Etterpå kan de innbudne spise. Gå derfor opp nå, for dere vil finne ham sånn omtrent denne tiden.

As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him.

De gikk da opp til byen. Da de kom inn, se, der kom Samuel ut mot dem, på vei opp til høyden.

And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place.

Herren hadde røpet for Samuel dagen før Sauls ankomst:

Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying,

I morgen ved denne tiden vil jeg sende en mann fra Benjamins land til deg. Du skal salve ham til leder over mitt folk Israel, så han kan redde mitt folk fra filistrenes hånd. For jeg har vendt øyne mot mitt folk, fordi deres rop har nådd meg.

To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me.

Da Samuel så Saul, sa Herren til ham: Se, dette er mannen jeg talte om til deg. Han skal herske over mitt folk.

And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people.

Så nærmet Saul seg Samuel i byporten og sa: Vær så snill, fortell meg hvor seerens hus er.

Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is.

Samuel svarte Saul: Jeg er seeren. Gå opp foran meg til høyden, for i dag skal dere spise med meg. I morgen vil jeg la deg dra og fortelle deg alt som ligger på ditt hjerte.

And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart.

Når det gjelder eslene som var blitt borte for tre dager siden, vær ikke bekymret for dem, for de er funnet. Men på hvem er alle Israels forhåpninger rettet? Er det ikke på deg og hele ditt fars hus?

And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house?

Saul svarte: Er jeg ikke en benjaminit, fra den minste av Israels stammer? Og er ikke min familie den minste av alle familiene i Benjamins stamme? Hvorfor taler du slik til meg?

And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me?

Samuel tok da Saul og tjeneren hans, og førte dem inn i spisesalen, og satte dem på den beste plassen blant de innbudne, som var omkring tretti personer.

And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons.

Samuel sa til kokken: Bring det stykket jeg ga deg, det jeg sa du skulle sette til side.

And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee.

Kokken tok da opp skulderen og det som lå på den, og satte det foran Saul. Samuel sa: Se, dette er blitt spart til deg! Sett deg og spis, for det har vært holdt tilbake for deg til denne tiden, når jeg sa jeg hadde innbudt folket. Så spiste Saul med Samuel den dagen.

And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day.

Da de kom ned fra høyden til byen, talte Samuel med Saul på hustaket.

And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house.

De sto opp tidlig, og ved daggry kalte Samuel på Saul på hustaket og sa: Stå opp, så jeg kan sende deg av sted. Saul sto opp, og begge, han og Samuel, gikk ut sammen.

And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad.

Mens de gikk ned mot utkanten av byen, sa Samuel til Saul: La tjeneren gå foran oss, (og han gikk foran), men stå her et øyeblikk, så jeg kan fortelle deg Guds ord.

And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
