Så sovnet Abia inn hos sine fedre, og de gravla ham i Davids by. Asa, hans sønn, ble konge i hans sted. I hans dager hadde landet fred i ti år.

So Abijah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the city of David: and Asa his son reigned in his stead. In his days the land was quiet ten years.

Asa gjorde det som var godt og rett i Herrens, hans Guds, øyne.

And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God:

Han fjernet altrene til de fremmede gudene og de høye stedene, brøt ned bildesøylene og hogg ned lundene.

For he took away the altars of the strange gods, and the high places, and brake down the images, and cut down the groves:

Og han befalte Juda å søke Herren, deres fedres Gud, og å gjøre etter loven og budene.

And commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to do the law and the commandment.

Han fjernet også de høye stedene og bildesøylene fra alle byene i Juda, og riket hadde ro under hans styre.

Also he took away out of all the cities of Judah the high places and the images: and the kingdom was quiet before him.

Han bygde befestede byer i Juda, for landet hadde hvile, og han førte ingen krig i disse årene, for Herren hadde gitt ham fred.

And he built fenced cities in Judah: for the land had rest, and he had no war in those years; because the LORD had given him rest.

Derfor sa han til Juda: La oss bygge disse byene og gjøre murer rundt dem, med tårn, porter og slåer, mens landet enda er foran oss. For vi har søkt Herren, vår Gud, og han har gitt oss fred på alle kanter. Så de bygde og blomstret.

Therefore he said unto Judah, Let us build these cities, and make about them walls, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us; because we have sought the LORD our God, we have sought him, and he hath given us rest on every side. So they built and prospered.

Asa hadde en hær av tre hundre tusen menn fra Juda, bevæpnet med store skjold og spyd, og fra Benjamin to hundre og åtti tusen menn, bevæpnet med små skjold og buer. Alle disse var sterke og modige krigere.

And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.

Da dro Sera, etiopieren, ut mot dem med en hær på tusen tusen mann og tre hundre vogner, og kom til Maresja.

And there came out against them Zerah the Ethiopian with an host of a thousand thousand, and three hundred chariots; and came unto Mareshah.

Asa dro ut mot ham, og de stilte seg opp til kamp i dalen ved Sefata i Maresja.

Then Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

Asa ropte til Herren, sin Gud, og sa: Herre, det er ingenting for deg å hjelpe, enten med mange eller med dem som ingen makt har. Hjelp oss, Herre vår Gud, for vi stoler på deg, og i ditt navn går vi mot denne store mengden. Herre, du er vår Gud; la ikke menneskene seire over deg.

And Asa cried unto the LORD his God, and said, LORD, it is nothing with thee to help, whether with many, or with them that have no power: help us, O LORD our God; for we rest on thee, and in thy name we go against this multitude. O LORD, thou art our God; let not man prevail against thee.

Så slo Herren etiopierne foran Asa og Juda, og etiopierne flyktet.

So the LORD smote the Ethiopians before Asa, and before Judah; and the Ethiopians fled.

Asa og folket som var med ham, forfulgte dem til Gerar, og etiopierne ble beseiret og kunne ikke komme seg igjen, for de ble ødelagt av Herren og hans hær. De førte med seg mye bytte.

And Asa and the people that were with him pursued them unto Gerar: and the Ethiopians were overthrown, that they could not recover themselves; for they were destroyed before the LORD, and before his host; and they carried away very much spoil.

De slo også byene rundt Gerar, for frykten for Herren kom over dem, og de plyndret alle byene, for det var meget mye bytte i dem.

And they smote all the cities round about Gerar; for the fear of the LORD came upon them: and they spoiled all the cities; for there was exceeding much spoil in them.

De slo også ned teltene til buskapen og førte bort mengder av sauer og kameler, og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem.

They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.
