Etter dette, og etter at alt var blitt ordnet, kom Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, og gikk inn i Juda. Han slo leir mot de befestede byene med tanker om å erobre dem for seg selv.

After these things, and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah, and encamped against the fenced cities, and thought to win them for himself.

Da Hiskia så at Sankerib hadde kommet og hadde til hensikt å kjempe mot Jerusalem,

And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib was come, and that he was purposed to fight against Jerusalem,

rådførte han seg med sine fyrster og tapre menn for å stanse vannet fra kildene utenfor byen, og de hjalp ham.

He took counsel with his princes and his mighty men to stop the waters of the fountains which were without the city: and they did help him.

Så samlet mange folk seg for å stanse alle kildene og bekken som rant gjennom landet, og de sa: Hvorfor skulle kongene i Assyria komme og finne mye vann?

So there was gathered much people together, who stopped all the fountains, and the brook that ran through the midst of the land, saying, Why should the kings of Assyria come, and find much water?

Han styrket seg også og bygde opp alle de murene som var i ferd med å brytes ned. Han reiste dem opp til tårnene og bygde en annen mur utenfor. Han reparerte også Millo i Davids by og laget mye våpen og skjold.

Also he strengthened himself, and built up all the wall that was broken, and raised it up to the towers, and another wall without, and repaired Millo in the city of David, and made darts and shields in abundance.

Han satte hærførere over folket, samlet dem hos seg ved byporten og talte oppmuntrende til dem, og sa:

And he set captains of war over the people, and gathered them together to him in the street of the gate of the city, and spake comfortably to them, saying,

Vær sterke og modige, vær ikke redde eller motløse for kongen av Assyria eller for alle de mange som er med ham. For det er flere med oss enn med ham.

Be strong and courageous, be not afraid nor dismayed for the king of Assyria, nor for all the multitude that is with him: for there be more with us than with him:

Med ham er en arm av kjød, men med oss er Herren vår Gud for å hjelpe oss og kjempe våre kamper. Og folket satte sin lit til ordene fra Hiskia, kongen av Juda.

With him is an arm of flesh; but with us is the LORD our God to help us, and to fight our battles. And the people rested themselves upon the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

Etter dette sendte Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, sine tjenere til Jerusalem, mens han selv beleiret Lakisj med hele sin hær, til Hiskia, kongen av Juda, og til hele Juda som var i Jerusalem, med budskap og sa:

After this did Sennacherib king of Assyria send his servants to Jerusalem, (but he himself laid siege against Lachish, and all his power with him,) unto Hezekiah king of Judah, and unto all Judah that were at Jerusalem, saying,

Så sier Sankerib, kongen av Assyria: Hva er det dere stoler på, som gjør at dere blir værende under beleiringen i Jerusalem?

Thus saith Sennacherib king of Assyria, Whereon do ye trust, that ye abide in the siege in Jerusalem?

Forfører ikke Hiskia dere til å gi opp og dø av sult og tørst ved å si: Herren vår Gud vil redde oss fra kongen av Assyrias hånd?

Doth not Hezekiah persuade you to give over yourselves to die by famine and by thirst, saying, The LORD our God shall deliver us out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Har ikke denne samme Hiskia fjernet hans høye steder og altere, og beordret Juda og Jerusalem å tilbe foran ett altar og brenne røkelse på det?

Hath not the same Hezekiah taken away his high places and his altars, and commanded Judah and Jerusalem, saying, Ye shall worship before one altar, and burn incense upon it?

Vet dere ikke hva jeg og mine fedre har gjort mot alle folkene i andre land? Var noen av nasjonenes guder i de landene i stand til å redde deres land fra min hånd?

Know ye not what I and my fathers have done unto all the people of other lands? were the gods of the nations of those lands any ways able to deliver their lands out of mine hand?

Who was there among all the gods of those nations that my fathers utterly destroyed, that could deliver his people out of mine hand, that your God should be able to deliver you out of mine hand?

Så la ikke Hiskia bedra dere eller overtale dere på denne måten, og tro heller ikke ham. For ingen gud for noen nasjon eller rike var i stand til å redde sitt folk fra min hånd eller fedrenes hånd. Hvordan skulle deres Gud kunne redde dere fra min hånd?

Now therefore let not Hezekiah deceive you, nor persuade you on this manner, neither yet believe him: for no god of any nation or kingdom was able to deliver his people out of mine hand, and out of the hand of my fathers: how much less shall your God deliver you out of mine hand?

Og hans tjenere talte enda mer mot Herren Gud og mot hans tjener Hiskia.

And his servants spake yet more against the LORD God, and against his servant Hezekiah.

Han skrev også brev for å spotte Herren, Israels Gud, og for å tale mot ham. Han sa: Som nasjonenes guder i andre land ikke har reddet sitt folk fra min hånd, slik skal heller ikke Hiskias Gud redde sitt folk fra min hånd.

He wrote also letters to rail on the LORD God of Israel, and to speak against him, saying, As the gods of the nations of other lands have not delivered their people out of mine hand, so shall not the God of Hezekiah deliver his people out of mine hand.

Så ropte de med høy stemme på hebraisk til folket i Jerusalem som sto på muren, for å skremme dem og skake dem, slik at de kunne innta byen.

Then they cried with a loud voice in the Jews' speech unto the people of Jerusalem that were on the wall, to affright them, and to trouble them; that they might take the city.

Og de talte mot Jerusalems Gud som mot gudene til folkene på jorden, som er verk av menneskehender.

And they spake against the God of Jerusalem, as against the gods of the people of the earth, which were the work of the hands of man.

Og på grunn av dette ba Hiskia, kongen, og profeten Jesaja, sønn av Amoz, og ropte til himmelen.

And for this cause Hezekiah the king, and the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz, prayed and cried to heaven.

Og Herren sendte en engel som tilintetgjorde alle tapre krigere, ledere og hærførere i Assyrias konges leir. Så han måtte vende tilbake i skam til sitt eget land. Da han kom inn i sitt guds hus, drepte de ham der med sverdet, de som hadde kommet fra hans egen kropp.

And the LORD sent an angel, which cut off all the mighty men of valour, and the leaders and captains in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he was come into the house of his god, they that came forth of his own bowels slew him there with the sword.

Slik reddet Herren Hiskia og innbyggerne i Jerusalem fra hånden til Sankerib, kongen av Assyria, og fra alle andre, og førte dem på alle sider.

Thus the LORD saved Hezekiah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem from the hand of Sennacherib the king of Assyria, and from the hand of all other, and guided them on every side.

Og mange brakte gaver til Herren i Jerusalem og kosteligheter til Hiskia, kongen av Juda, slik at han ble opphøyd i alle nasjoners øyne etter dette.

And many brought gifts unto the LORD to Jerusalem, and presents to Hezekiah king of Judah: so that he was magnified in the sight of all nations from thenceforth.

I de dager ble Hiskia dødelig syk, og han ba til Herren. Og han talte til ham og ga ham et tegn.

In those days Hezekiah was sick to the death, and prayed unto the LORD: and he spake unto him, and he gave him a sign.

Men Hiskia gjengjeldte ikke etter den velvilje som var vist ham, for hans hjerte ble hovmodig, og vred kom over ham og Juda og Jerusalem.

But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: therefore there was wrath upon him, and upon Judah and Jerusalem.

Men Hiskia ydmyket seg for sitt hjertes stolthet, både han og innbyggerne i Jerusalem, slik at Herrens vrede ikke kom over dem i Hiskias dager.

Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah.

Og Hiskia hadde overveldende mye rikdom og ære, og han lagde seg skattkamre for sølv, gull, edelstener, krydderier, skjold og alle slags behagelige skatter.

And Hezekiah had exceeding much riches and honour: and he made himself treasuries for silver, and for gold, and for precious stones, and for spices, and for shields, and for all manner of pleasant jewels;

Også for økningen av korn, vin, olje, og for alle slags dyr og fjøs for flokkene sine.

Storehouses also for the increase of corn, and wine, and oil; and stalls for all manner of beasts, and cotes for flocks.

Dessuten skaffet han seg byer og eiendommer av flokker og buskap i overflod, for Gud hadde gitt ham mye rikdom.

Moreover he provided him cities, and possessions of flocks and herds in abundance: for God had given him substance very much.

Denne samme Hiskia stengte også det øvre vannløpet av Gihon og ledet det rett ned mot vest for Davids by. Og Hiskia hadde suksess i alt det han foretok seg.

This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper watercourse of Gihon, and brought it straight down to the west side of the city of David. And Hezekiah prospered in all his works.

Men i saken med ambassadørene fra Babylons fyrster, som ble sendt til ham for å spørre om det under som var skjedd i landet, lot Gud ham være for å prøve ham, for at han skulle vite alt hva som var i hans hjerte.

Howbeit in the business of the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who sent unto him to inquire of the wonder that was done in the land, God left him, to try him, that he might know all that was in his heart.

Nå, resten av Hiskias gjerninger og hans godhet, se, de er skrevet ned i Jesajas, profeten, sønn av Amoz, visjon og i boken om kongene av Juda og Israel.

Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and his goodness, behold, they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz, and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.

Og Hiskia sovnet inn med sine fedre, og de begravde ham i det beste av gravene til Davids sønner. Og hele Juda og innbyggerne i Jerusalem viste ham ære ved hans død. Og Manasse, hans sønn, regjerte etter ham.

And Hezekiah slept with his fathers, and they buried him in the chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death. And Manasseh his son reigned in his stead.
