Det skjedde i det tredje året av Hosea, sønn av Ela, Israels konge, at Hiskia, sønn av Akas, kongen av Juda, begynte å regjere.

Now it came to pass in the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Hezekiah the son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign.

Han var tjuefem år gammel da han begynte å regjere, og han regjerte i tjueni år i Jerusalem. Hans mors navn var Abi, datter av Sakarja.

Twenty and five years old was he when he began to reign; and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem. His mother's name also was Abi, the daughter of Zachariah.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all that David his father did.

Han fjernet offerhaugene, knuste de hellige steinene og hogg ned Asjera-pålene. Han knuste kobberslangen som Moses hadde laget, for frem til de dager brente Israels barn røkelse til den, og de kalte den Nehusjtan.

He removed the high places, and brake the images, and cut down the groves, and brake in pieces the brasen serpent that Moses had made: for unto those days the children of Israel did burn incense to it: and he called it Nehushtan.

Han stolte på Herren, Israels Gud, slik at det ikke var noen som ham blant alle Judas konger, verken før ham eller etter ham.

He trusted in the LORD God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.

Han holdt fast ved Herren og vek ikke fra å følge ham, men holdt hans bud, som Herren hadde befalt Moses.

For he clave to the LORD, and departed not from following him, but kept his commandments, which the LORD commanded Moses.

Og Herren var med ham; han hadde fremgang hvor hen han gikk. Han gjorde opprør mot Assyrias konge og tjente ham ikke.

And the LORD was with him; and he prospered whithersoever he went forth: and he rebelled against the king of Assyria, and served him not.

Han slo filisterne helt til Gaza og grensene der, fra tårnet i vakthusene til de befestede byene.

He smote the Philistines, even unto Gaza, and the borders thereof, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

I det fjerde året av kong Hiskia, som var det syvende året av Hosea, sønn av Ela, Israels konge, kom Sjalmanezer, kongen av Assyria, opp mot Samaria og beleiret det.

And it came to pass in the fourth year of king Hezekiah, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, that Shalmaneser king of Assyria came up against Samaria, and besieged it.

Ved slutten av tre år inntok de det; i det sjette året av Hiskia, som er det niende året av Hosea, Israels konge, ble Samaria inntatt.

And at the end of three years they took it: even in the sixth year of Hezekiah, that is the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel, Samaria was taken.

And the king of Assyria did carry away Israel unto Assyria, and put them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes:

Because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD their God, but transgressed his covenant, and all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded, and would not hear them, nor do them.

I det fjortende året av kong Hiskia kom Sanherib, kongen av Assyria, opp mot alle de befestede byene i Juda og inntok dem.

Now in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah did Sennacherib king of Assyria come up against all the fenced cities of Judah, and took them.

Hiskia, kongen av Juda, sendte bud til kongen av Assyria til Lakisj og sa: «Jeg har syndet. Trekk deg tilbake fra meg; det du pålegger meg, vil jeg bære.» Så satte kongen av Assyria Hiskia, kongen av Juda, til å betale tre hundre talenter sølv og tretti talenter gull.

And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Assyria to Lachish, saying, I have offended; return from me: that which thou puttest on me will I bear. And the king of Assyria appointed unto Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

Hiskia ga ham alt sølvet som ble funnet i Herrens hus og i kongens hus' skattkammer.

And Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house.

På den tiden fjernet Hiskia gullbelegget fra dørene til Herrens tempel og fra de søylene som han selv hadde belagt, og han ga det til kongen av Assyria.

At that time did Hezekiah cut off the gold from the doors of the temple of the LORD, and from the pillars which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid, and gave it to the king of Assyria.

Kongen av Assyria sendte Tartaan, Rabsaris og Rab-Sjake fra Lakisj med en stor hær til kong Hiskia i Jerusalem. Og de kom opp og tok stilling ved vannledningen til øvre dam langs Fullers mark.

And the king of Assyria sent Tartan and Rabsaris and Rab-shakeh from Lachish to king Hezekiah with a great host against Jerusalem. And they went up and came to Jerusalem. And when they were come up, they came and stood by the conduit of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the fuller's field.

Da de kalte på kongen, kom Eliakim, Hilkias sønn, som styrte kongens hus, ut til dem, samt skriveren Sebna og historieskriveren Joah, Asafs sønn.

And when they had called to the king, there came out to them Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder.

Rab-Sjake sa til dem: «Si nå til Hiskia: Så sier den store kongen, kongen av Assyria: Hva slags tillit er det du har til?

And Rab-shakeh said unto them, Speak ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest?

Du sier at du har råd og styrke for krigen, men de er tomme ord. Hvem er det du stoler på, siden du gjør opprør mot meg?

Thou sayest, (but they are but vain words,) I have counsel and strength for the war. Now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?

Se nå, du stoler på denne brukne stokken, Egypt, som hvis en mann støtter seg til den, vil den gå inn i hånden hans og stikke den. Slik er det med farao, kongen av Egypt, for alle som stoler på ham.

Now, behold, thou trustest upon the staff of this bruised reed, even upon Egypt, on which if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt unto all that trust on him.

Men hvis dere sier til meg: Vi stoler på Herren vår Gud, er det ikke nettopp han hvis offerhauger og altere Hiskia har fjernet, og sagt til Juda og Jerusalem: Dere skal tilbe foran dette alteret i Jerusalem?

But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?

Så, jeg ber deg, gi løfter til min herre, kongen av Assyria, så skal jeg gi deg to tusen hester, hvis du er i stand til å skaffe ryttere til dem.

Now therefore, I pray thee, give pledges to my lord the king of Assyria, and I will deliver thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.

How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master's servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

Am I now come up without the LORD against this place to destroy it? The LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

Da sa Eliakim, Hoasas sønn, og Joah, til Rab-Sjake: «Vær så snill å snakke med dine tjenere på arameisk, for vi forstår det. Snakk ikke til oss på jødenes språk i folkets høring som står på muren.»

Then said Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and Shebna, and Joah, unto Rab-shakeh, Speak, I pray thee, to thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and talk not with us in the Jews' language in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

Men Rab-Sjake svarte dem: «Har min herre sendt meg til din herre og til deg for å si disse ordene? Har han ikke sendt meg til de mennene som sitter på muren, som må spise sin egen avføring og drikke sin egen urin sammen med dere?»

But Rab-shakeh said unto them, Hath my master sent me to thy master, and to thee, to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men which sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you?

Da sto Rab-Sjake opp og ropte med høy stemme på jødenes språk, og sa: «Hør den store kongens ord, kongen av Assyria!

Then Rab-shakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and spake, saying, Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria:

Så sier kongen: La ikke Hiskia narre dere, for han er ikke i stand til å redde dere fra min hånd.

Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you out of his hand:

La heller ikke Hiskia få dere til å stole på Herren ved å si: Herren vil sikkert redde oss, og denne byen vil ikke bli overgitt i kongen av Assyrias hånd.

Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, and this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Hør ikke på Hiskia! For så sier kongen av Assyria: Gjør fred med meg ved en gave og kom ut til meg, så skal hver og en av dere spise av sitt eget vintre og sitt eget fikentre, og drikke vannet fra sine egne cisterner,

Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me, and then eat ye every man of his own vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his cistern:

inntil jeg kommer og tar dere til et land som er som deres eget land, et land med korn og vin, et land med brød og vingårder, et land med oliventrær og honning, så dere kan leve og ikke dø. Hør ikke på Hiskia når han lokker dere og sier: Herren vil frelse oss.

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of oil olive and of honey, that ye may live, and not die: and hearken not unto Hezekiah, when he persuadeth you, saying, The LORD will deliver us.

Har noen av nasjonenes guder noen gang greid å redde sitt land fra kongen av Assyrias hånd?

Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

Hvor er Hamats guder og Arpads guder? Hvor er gudene fra Sefarvaim, Hena og Ivva? Har de greid å frelse Samaria fra min hånd?

Where are the gods of Hamath, and of Arpad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah? have they delivered Samaria out of mine hand?

Hvem av alle landenes guder har greid å frelse sitt land fra min hånd, så Herren skulle redde Jerusalem fra min hånd?»

Who are they among all the gods of the countries, that have delivered their country out of mine hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of mine hand?

Men folket holdt seg stille og svarte ham ikke med ett ord, for kongens befaling var: Svar ham ikke.

But the people held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king's commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

Så kom Eliakim, Hilkias sønn, som var over husholdningen, og Sebna, skriveren, og Joah, Asafs sønn, historieskriveren, til Hiskia med sine klær revet og fortalte ham Rab-Sjakes ord.

Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rab-shakeh.
