Josjia var åtte år gammel da han begynte å regjere, og han styrte i trettien år i Jerusalem. Moren hans het Jedida, datter av Adaija fra Boskat.

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.

Han gjorde det som var rett i Herrens øyne, og fulgte hele veien til David, sin far, uten å vike av verken til høyre eller venstre.

And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left.

I det attende året av kong Josjia sendte kongen Sjafan, sønn av Asalja, sønn av Mesjullam, sekretæren, til Herrens hus med denne beskjed:

And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying,

«Gå opp til presten Hilkia og la ham telle opp sølvet som er brakt inn i Herrens hus, som dørvokterne har samlet inn fra folket.

Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people:

La dem gi det til dem som utfører arbeidet, som har ansvar for Herrens hus. La dem gi det til dem som utfører arbeidet i Herrens hus for å reparere skadene på bygningen.

And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD: and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house,

Til tømmermennene, bygningsarbeiderne og steinhuggerne, og til å kjøpe tømmer og hugget stein for å reparere bygningen.

Unto carpenters, and builders, and masons, and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house.

De gjorde ikke regnskap med dem for pengene som ble gitt i deres hånd, for de handlet trofast.»

Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand, because they dealt faithfully.

Da sa ypperstepresten Hilkia til Sjafan, sekretæren: «Jeg har funnet lovboken i Herrens hus.» Hilkia ga boken til Sjafan, og han leste den.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

Sjafan, sekretæren, kom tilbake til kongen og ga kongen beskjed igjen og sa: «Dine tjenere har samlet inn pengene som ble funnet i huset, og har gitt dem til dem som utfører arbeidet, de som har tilsynet med Herrens hus.»

And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought the king word again, and said, Thy servants have gathered the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work, that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.

Sjafan, sekretæren, fortalte også kongen: «Hilkia, presten, har gitt meg en bok.» Og Sjafan leste den for kongen.

And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king.

Da kongen hørte ordene fra lovboken, rev han sine klær.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the law, that he rent his clothes.

Kongen befalte Hilkia, presten, Ahikam, sønn av Sjafan, Akbor, sønn av Mikaia, Sjafan, sekretæren, og Asaja, en tjener av kongen, og sa:

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Michaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asahiah a servant of the king's, saying,

«Gå og spør Herren for meg, for folket og for hele Juda, angående ordene i denne boken som er funnet. For stor er Herrens vrede som er tent imot oss, fordi våre fedre ikke har lyttet til ordene i denne boken, for å gjøre alt som er skrevet om oss.»

Go ye, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found: for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.

Så gikk Hilkia, presten, Ahikam, Akbor, Sjafan og Asaja til profetinnen Hulda, kona til Sjallum, sønn av Tikva, sønn av Harhas, garderobevokteren. Hun bodde i Jerusalem i den andre bydelen. De talte med henne.

So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her.

Hun sa til dem: «Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Si til mannen som har sendt dere til meg:

And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,

Så sier Herren: Se, jeg vil bringe ulykke over dette stedet og over innbyggerne der, alt det som står i boken som Judas konge har lest:

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read:

Fordi de har forlatt meg og brent røkelse for andre guder og således hisset meg til vrede med alle hendene deres verk, skal min vrede flamme opp mot dette stedet og ikke slukkes.

Because they have forsaken me, and have burned incense unto other gods, that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands; therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place, and shall not be quenched.

Men til kongen av Juda, som har sendt dere for å spørre Herren, skal dere si: Så sier Herren, Israels Gud, angående de ordene du har hørt:

But to the king of Judah which sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, As touching the words which thou hast heard;

Fordi ditt hjerte var føyelig, og du har ydmyket deg for Herren da du hørte hva jeg talte mot dette stedet og dets innbyggere, at de skulle bli en ødeleggelse og en forbannelse, og fordi du har revet dine klær og grått for meg, har jeg også hørt deg, sier Herren.

Because thine heart was tender, and thou hast humbled thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spake against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become a desolation and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before me; I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.

Se, derfor vil jeg samle deg til dine fedre, og du skal bli samlet i din grav i fred. Dine øyne skal ikke se all den ulykken som jeg vil bringe over dette stedet.» De brakte da denne beskjeden tilbake til kongen.

Behold therefore, I will gather thee unto thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace; and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place. And they brought the king word again.
