Etter dette skjedde det at kongen av ammonittene døde, og hans sønn Hanun ble konge i hans sted.

And it came to pass after this, that the king of the children of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his stead.

Da sa David: Jeg vil vise godhet mot Hanun, sønn av Nahasj, slik som hans far viste godhet mot meg. Og David sendte sine tjenere for å trøste ham etter farens død. Så kom Davids tjenere til ammonittenes land.

Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David's servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.

Men fyrstene blant ammonittene sa til Hanun, deres herre: Tror du at David egentlig ønsker å ære din far ved å sende trøstere til deg? Har ikke David heller sendt sine tjenere for å undersøke og spionere og for å ødelegge byen?

And the princes of the children of Ammon said unto Hanun their lord, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? hath not David rather sent his servants unto thee, to search the city, and to spy it out, and to overthrow it?

Da tok Hanun Davids tjenere og barberte av dem halve skjegget, kuttet av klærne deres midt på, så det nådde bakdelen, og sendte dem bort.

Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved off the one half of their beards, and cut off their garments in the middle, even to their buttocks, and sent them away.

Da David fikk høre om det, sendte han bud for å møte dem, for de var sterkt skamfulle: og kongen sa: Bli i Jeriko til skjegget deres har vokst ut igjen, og kom så tilbake.

When they told it unto David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed: and the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.

Da ammonittene innså at de var blitt hatefulle for David, sendte de bud og leide inn syrerne fra Bet-Rehob og syrerne fra Soba, tjue tusen fotsoldater, og av kong Maakas menn tusen, samt tolv tusen fra landet Tob.

And when the children of Ammon saw that they stank before David, the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth-rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, twenty thousand footmen, and of king Maacah a thousand men, and of Ish-tob twelve thousand men.

Da David hørte om dette, sendte han Joab og hæren av mektige krigere.

And when David heard of it, he sent Joab, and all the host of the mighty men.

Ammonittene rykket ut og stilte seg opp til kamp ved byporten, mens syrerne fra Soba, Rehob, Isj-Tob og Maaka stod separate på marken.

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

Da Joab så at slaget var klart både foran og bak, valgte han ut de beste krigerne i Israel og stilte dem opp mot syrerne.

When Joab saw that the front of the battle was against him before and behind, he chose of all the choice men of Israel, and put them in array against the Syrians:

Resten av folket overlot han til sin bror Abisjai, så han kunne stille dem opp mot ammonittene.

And the rest of the people he delivered into the hand of Abishai his brother, that he might put them in array against the children of Ammon.

Og han sa: Hvis syrerne blir for sterke for meg, skal du hjelpe meg; men hvis ammonittene blir for sterke for deg, kommer jeg og hjelper deg.

And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will come and help thee.

Vær modige, og la oss være sterke for vårt folk og for vår Guds byer. Må Herren gjøre det som er godt i hans øyne.

Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the LORD do that which seemeth him good.

Så gikk Joab og folket som var med ham fram til slaget mot syrerne, og de flyktet for ham.

And Joab drew nigh, and the people that were with him, unto the battle against the Syrians: and they fled before him.

Da ammonittene så at syrerne flyktet, flyktet de også for Abisjai og gikk inn i byen. Så vendte Joab tilbake fra å kjempe mot ammonittene og dro til Jerusalem.

And when the children of Ammon saw that the Syrians were fled, then fled they also before Abishai, and entered into the city. So Joab returned from the children of Ammon, and came to Jerusalem.

Da syrerne så at de var blitt slått av Israel, samlet de seg igjen.

And when the Syrians saw that they were smitten before Israel, they gathered themselves together.

Hadadeser sendte bud og hentet syrerne som var på den andre siden av elven. De kom til Helam, og Sjobak, Hadadesers hærfører, ledet dem.

And Hadarezer sent, and brought out the Syrians that were beyond the river: and they came to Helam; and Shobach the captain of the host of Hadarezer went before them.

Da det ble meldt til David, samlet han hele Israel, krysset Jordan og kom til Helam. Syrerne stilte seg opp til kamp mot David og sloss mot ham.

And when it was told David, he gathered all Israel together, and passed over Jordan, and came to Helam. And the Syrians set themselves in array against David, and fought with him.

Men syrerne flyktet for Israel; David drepte mennene på syv hundre av deres vogner og førti tusen ryttere, og han slo Sjobak, deres hærfører, så han døde der.

And the Syrians fled before Israel; and David slew the men of seven hundred chariots of the Syrians, and forty thousand horsemen, and smote Shobach the captain of their host, who died there.

Da alle kongene som var Hadadesers tjenere så at de var blitt slått av Israel, sluttet de fred med Israel og tjente dem. Dermed våget ikke syrerne å hjelpe ammonittene mer.

And when all the kings that were servants to Hadarezer saw that they were smitten before Israel, they made peace with Israel, and served them. So the Syrians feared to help the children of Ammon any more.
