Og Herren sendte Natan til David. Han kom til ham og sa: Det var to menn i en by; den ene var rik, og den andre fattig.

And the LORD sent Nathan unto David. And he came unto him, and said unto him, There were two men in one city; the one rich, and the other poor.

Den rike mannen hadde svært mange flokker og buskap.

The rich man had exceeding many flocks and herds:

Men den fattige mannen hadde ingenting, bortsett fra et lite lam som han hadde kjøpt og fostret opp. Det vokste opp sammen med ham og hans barn; det spiste av hans mat, drakk av hans kopp og lå i fanget hans. Det var som en datter for ham.

But the poor man had nothing, save one little ewe lamb, which he had bought and nourished up: and it grew up together with him, and with his children; it did eat of his own meat, and drank of his own cup, and lay in his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

Så kom det en reisende til den rike mannen, og han skånte å ta fra sin egen flokk eller buskap for å lage i stand for den reisende som var kommet til ham. I stedet tok han det fattige mannens lam og serverte det til mannen som var kommet til ham.

And there came a traveller unto the rich man, and he spared to take of his own flock and of his own herd, to dress for the wayfaring man that was come unto him; but took the poor man's lamb, and dressed it for the man that was come to him.

Davids sinne ble sterkt opptent mot mannen, og han sa til Natan: Så sant Herren lever, mannen som har gjort dette, fortjener å dø.

And David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, As the LORD liveth, the man that hath done this thing shall surely die:

Han skal erstatte lammet fire ganger, fordi han gjorde dette, og fordi han ikke viste noen nåde.

And he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity.

Da sa Natan til David: Du er mannen. Så sier Herren, Israels Gud: Jeg salvet deg til konge over Israel, og jeg fridde deg fra Sauls hånd.

And Nathan said to David, Thou art the man. Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul;

Jeg ga deg din herres hus, og dine herres hustruer i din favn, og ga deg Israels og Judas hus; og hvis det hadde vært for lite, ville jeg ha gitt deg mye mer.

And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things.

Hvorfor har du foraktet Herrens bud ved å gjøre det onde i hans øyne? Du har slått Uria hetitten med sverdet, og tatt hans kone til din hustru, og drept ham med ammonittenes sverd.

Wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the LORD, to do evil in his sight? thou hast killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword, and hast taken his wife to be thy wife, and hast slain him with the sword of the children of Ammon.

Derfor skal sverdet aldri vike fra ditt hus, fordi du har foraktet meg, og tatt Uria hetittens kone til din hustru.

Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thine house; because thou hast despised me, and hast taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be thy wife.

Så sier Herren: Se, jeg vil la ulykken reise seg mot deg fra ditt eget hus, og jeg vil ta dine hustruer foran dine øyne og gi dem til din neste, og han skal ligge med dine hustruer i solens lys.

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house, and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun.

For du gjorde det i hemmelighet, men jeg vil gjøre dette foran hele Israel, og i solens lys.

For thou didst it secretly: but I will do this thing before all Israel, and before the sun.

David sa til Natan: Jeg har syndet mot Herren. Og Natan sa til David: Herren har også tatt bort din synd; du skal ikke dø.

And David said unto Nathan, I have sinned against the LORD. And Nathan said unto David, The LORD also hath put away thy sin; thou shalt not die.

Men fordi du ved denne gjerningen har gitt Herrens fiender stor anledning til å spotte, skal barnet som er født av deg, dø.

Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

Så dro Natan hjem. Herren slo barnet som Uria's kone hadde født til David, og det ble alvorlig syk.

And Nathan departed unto his house. And the LORD struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

David søkte derfor Gud for barnets skyld, og David fastet, gikk inn og lå hele natten på jorden.

David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

De eldste i hans hus sto opp og ville få ham til å reise seg fra jorden, men han ville ikke, og han spiste heller ikke brød sammen med dem.

And the elders of his house arose, and went to him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

Og på den syvende dagen døde barnet. Davids tjenere våget ikke å fortelle ham at barnet var dødt, for de sa: Se, mens barnet ennå levde, snakket vi til ham, og han lyttet ikke til hva vi sa. Hvordan vil han da plaget seg selv hvis vi forteller ham at barnet er dødt?

And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead: for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he would not hearken unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead?

Da David så at tjenerne hans hvisket sammen, skjønte han at barnet var dødt. David sa til sine tjenere: Er barnet dødt? Og de svarte: Det er dødt.

But when David saw that his servants whispered, David perceived that the child was dead: therefore David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

Da reiste David seg fra jorden, vasket seg, salvet seg og skiftet klær. Så gikk han inn i Herrens hus og tilbad. Da han kom hjem til sitt eget hus, ba han om mat, og de satte mat foran ham, og han spiste.

Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel, and came into the house of the LORD, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

David's tjenere sa til ham: Hva er det du har gjort? Du fastet og gråt for barnet mens det levde, men nå som barnet er dødt, reiser du deg opp og spiser.

Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

Han svarte: Mens barnet ennå levde, fastet jeg og gråt, for jeg sa: Hvem vet, kanskje blir Herren meg nådig så barnet får leve?

And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who can tell whether GOD will be gracious to me, that the child may live?

Men nå er det dødt; hvorfor skulle jeg faste? Kan jeg bringe det tilbake igjen? Jeg skal gå til det, men det skal ikke vende tilbake til meg.

But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me.

David trøstet Batseba, sin kone, gikk inn til henne og lå med henne. Og hun fødte en sønn, og han kalte ham Salomo. Herren elsket ham.

And David comforted Bath-sheba his wife, and went in unto her, and lay with her: and she bare a son, and he called his name Solomon: and the LORD loved him.

Han sendte også bud ved profeten Natan, og han kalte ham Jedidjah, på grunn av Herren.

And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD.

Joab kjempet mot ammonittenes by Rabba og tok kongens by.

And Joab fought against Rabbah of the children of Ammon, and took the royal city.

Joab sendte bud til David og sa: Jeg har kjempet mot Rabba og tatt vannbyen.

And Joab sent messengers to David, and said, I have fought against Rabbah, and have taken the city of waters.

Samle nå resten av folket, slå leir mot byen og ta den, ellers vil jeg ta byen og den vil bli kalt etter mitt navn.

Now therefore gather the rest of the people together, and encamp against the city, and take it: lest I take the city, and it be called after my name.

Så samlet David hele folket, dro til Rabba, kjempet mot den og tok den.

And David gathered all the people together, and went to Rabbah, and fought against it, and took it.

Han tok kongens krone fra hodet hans, som veide en talent gull med edle steiner; og den ble satt på Davids hode. Han førte ut byttet fra byen i stor mengde.

And he took their king's crown from off his head, the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones: and it was set on David's head. And he brought forth the spoil of the city in great abundance.

Han førte folket ut fra byen og satte dem til arbeidet under sager, jernhakker og jernøkser, og lot dem gå gjennom teglovnen. Dette gjorde han mot alle ammonittenes byer. Så dro David og hele folket tilbake til Jerusalem.

And he brought forth the people that were therein, and put them under saws, and under harrows of iron, and under axes of iron, and made them pass through the brickkiln: and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon. So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem.
