Slik skjedde det etter dette at Absalom skaffet seg vogner og hester, og femti menn som skulle løpe foran ham.

And it came to pass after this, that Absalom prepared him chariots and horses, and fifty men to run before him.

Absalom sto opp tidlig og stilte seg ved siden av porten. Når folk som hadde en sak, kom til kongen for å få dom, ropte Absalom til dem og spurte: Fra hvilken by er du? Når de svarte: Din tjener er fra en av Israels stammer,

And Absalom rose up early, and stood beside the way of the gate: and it was so, that when any man that had a controversy came to the king for judgment, then Absalom called unto him, and said, Of what city art thou? And he said, Thy servant is of one of the tribes of Israel.

sa Absalom til dem: Se, din sak er god og riktig, men det er ingen fra kongen som kan høre deg.

And Absalom said unto him, See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.

Absalom sa videre: Å, hvis bare jeg var dommer i landet, så kunne alle som har en tvist eller sak komme til meg, og jeg ville gjøre rett etter.

Absalom said moreover, Oh that I were made judge in the land, that every man which hath any suit or cause might come unto me, and I would do him justice!

Når noen nærmet seg ham for å bøye seg for ham, rakte han hånden ut, tok vedkommende og kysset ham.

And it was so, that when any man came nigh to him to do him obeisance, he put forth his hand, and took him, and kissed him.

På denne måten gjorde Absalom overfor hele Israel som kom til kongen for å få dom, og slik vant han Israels folks hjerter.

And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Etter fire år sa Absalom til kongen: La meg dra og oppfylle et løfte jeg har gitt til Herren, i Hebron.

And it came to pass after forty years, that Absalom said unto the king, I pray thee, let me go and pay my vow, which I have vowed unto the LORD, in Hebron.

For da din tjener bodde i Geshur i Syria, ga jeg et løfte og sa: Hvis Herren lar meg vende tilbake til Jerusalem, vil jeg tjene Herren.

For thy servant vowed a vow while I abode at Geshur in Syria, saying, If the LORD shall bring me again indeed to Jerusalem, then I will serve the LORD.

Kongen sa til ham: Gå i fred. Så reiste han og dro til Hebron.

And the king said unto him, Go in peace. So he arose, and went to Hebron.

Men Absalom sendte speidere ut til alle Israels stammer og sa: Så snart dere hører trompetsignalet, skal dere si: Absalom er konge i Hebron.

But Absalom sent spies throughout all the tribes of Israel, saying, As soon as ye hear the sound of the trumpet, then ye shall say, Absalom reigneth in Hebron.

Sammen med Absalom dro to hundre menn ut fra Jerusalem. De var blitt invitert og de dro i god tro, uten å vite noe.

And with Absalom went two hundred men out of Jerusalem, that were called; and they went in their simplicity, and they knew not any thing.

Absalom sendte bud på Ahitofel fra Gilo, Davids rådgiver, fra hans by Giloh, mens han ofret. Og sammensvergelsen ble sterk, for stadig flere av folket sluttet seg til Absalom.

And Absalom sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's counseller, from his city, even from Giloh, while he offered sacrifices. And the conspiracy was strong; for the people increased continually with Absalom.

En budbringer kom til David og sa: Israels folks hjerter har vendt seg til Absalom.

And there came a messenger to David, saying, The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.

Da sa David til alle sine tjenere som var med ham i Jerusalem: Stå opp, la oss flykte, ellers slipper vi ikke unna Absalom. Skynd dere å dra, ellers kan han plutselig overfalle oss, føre ulykke over oss og ødelegge byen med sverd.

And David said unto all his servants that were with him at Jerusalem, Arise, and let us flee; for we shall not else escape from Absalom: make speed to depart, lest he overtake us suddenly, and bring evil upon us, and smite the city with the edge of the sword.

Kongens tjenere sa til kongen: Se, dine tjenere er klare til å gjøre det min herre kongen vil.

And the king's servants said unto the king, Behold, thy servants are ready to do whatsoever my lord the king shall appoint.

Kongen dro av sted, og hele hans husholdning fulgte han. Men kongen lot ti kvinner, som var konkubiner, bli igjen for å ta vare på huset.

And the king went forth, and all his household after him. And the king left ten women, which were concubines, to keep the house.

Og kongen dro videre, og alle folkene fulgte han, og de stanset på et sted langt unna.

And the king went forth, and all the people after him, and tarried in a place that was far off.

Alle hans tjenere passerte ved siden av ham; og alle keretittene, peletittene og gittittene, seks hundre menn fra Gat som hadde fulgt ham, gikk foran kongen.

And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.

Så sa kongen til Ittai, gittitten: Hvorfor går du også med oss? Vend tilbake og bli med kongen igjen, for du er en fremmed og dessuten en flyktning.

Then said the king to Ittai the Gittite, Wherefore goest thou also with us? return to thy place, and abide with the king: for thou art a stranger, and also an exile.

Du kom bare i går, skal jeg så i dag la deg vandre hvileløst med oss? Jeg vet ikke hvor jeg drar. Vend tilbake og ta med dine brødre. Måtte barmhjertighet og sannhet være med deg.

Whereas thou camest but yesterday, should I this day make thee go up and down with us? seeing I go whither I may, return thou, and take back thy brethren: mercy and truth be with thee.

Ittai svarte kongen og sa: Så sant Herren lever, og min herre kongen lever: Der min herre kongen er, enten det er i liv eller død, der skal også din tjener være.

And Ittai answered the king, and said, As the LORD liveth, and as my lord the king liveth, surely in what place my lord the king shall be, whether in death or life, even there also will thy servant be.

David sa til Ittai: Dra og gå over. Så gikk Ittai, gittitten, over, med alle sine menn og alle barna som var med ham.

And David said to Ittai, Go and pass over. And Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones that were with him.

Og hele landet gråt høyt, og alle folket dro over; også kongen dro over bekken Kidron, og alle folket dro på vei mot ørkenen.

And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.

Også Sadok og alle levittene var med ham, bærende på Guds pakttre: og de satte ned Guds ark, og Abjatar gikk opp inntil folket hadde forlatt byen.

And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.

Kongen sa til Sadok: Ta Guds ark tilbake til byen. Hvis jeg finner nåde for Herrens øyne, vil Han føre meg tilbake og la meg se både den og sin bolig.

And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:

Men hvis Han sier: Jeg har ingen glede i deg, se, her er jeg, la Ham gjøre med meg som det synes Ham godt.

But if he thus say, I have no delight in thee; behold, here am I, let him do to me as seemeth good unto him.

Kongen sa også til Sadok, presten: Er ikke du en seer? Vend tilbake til byen i fred, og ta med dine to sønner, Ahima’as, din sønn, og Jonatan, Abjatars sønn.

The king said also unto Zadok the priest, Art not thou a seer? return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz thy son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.

Se, jeg vil vente i slettene i ørkenen til det kommer beskjed fra dere for å informere meg.

See, I will tarry in the plain of the wilderness, until there come word from you to certify me.

Sadok og Abjatar bar dermed Guds ark tilbake til Jerusalem, og de ble der.

Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried the ark of God again to Jerusalem: and they tarried there.

David gikk oppover Oljeberget og gråt mens han gikk, og han dekket sitt hode og gikk barbeint. Og alle som var med ham, dekket også hodene sine og gikk gråtende opp.

And David went up by the ascent of mount Olivet, and wept as he went up, and had his head covered, and he went barefoot: and all the people that was with him covered every man his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.

Noen fortalte David: Ahitofel er blant konspiratorene med Absalom. Og David sa: Å, Herre, jeg ber deg, gjør Ahitofels råd til dårskap.

And one told David, saying, Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom. And David said, O LORD, I pray thee, turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.

Da David kom til toppen av fjellet, der han tilba Gud, se, da kom Husjai, arkittitten, for å møte ham med sønderrivd kappe og jord på hodet.

And it came to pass, that when David was come to the top of the mount, where he worshipped God, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his coat rent, and earth upon his head:

David sa til ham: Hvis du går med meg, vil du bli en byrde for meg.

Unto whom David said, If thou passest on with me, then thou shalt be a burden unto me:

Men hvis du vender tilbake til byen og sier til Absalom: Jeg vil være din tjener, konge; slik jeg har vært din fars tjener til nå, vil jeg også nå være din tjener, da kan du for min del gjøre Ahitofels råd til intet.

But if thou return to the city, and say unto Absalom, I will be thy servant, O king; as I have been thy father's servant hitherto, so will I now also be thy servant: then mayest thou for me defeat the counsel of Ahithophel.

Har du ikke Sadok og Abjatar, prestene, med deg der? Så alt du hører fra kongens hus, skal du fortelle til Sadok og Abjatar, prestene.

And hast thou not there with thee Zadok and Abiathar the priests? therefore it shall be, that what thing soever thou shalt hear out of the king's house, thou shalt tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.

Se, de har der med seg sine to sønner, Ahima’as, Sadoks sønn, og Jonatan, Abjatars sønn; og ved dem skal dere sende meg alle opplysninger dere hører.

Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz Zadok's son, and Jonathan Abiathar's son; and by them ye shall send unto me every thing that ye can hear.

Slik kom Husjai, Davids venn, inn i byen, og Absalom kom til Jerusalem.

So Hushai David's friend came into the city, and Absalom came into Jerusalem.
