Nok en gang ble Herrens vrede tent mot Israel, og han påvirket David til å si: «Gå og tell folket i Israel og Juda.»

And again the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he moved David against them to say, Go, number Israel and Judah.

Kongen sa til Joab, hærføreren som var hos ham: «Gå nå gjennom alle Israels stammer, fra Dan til Be’er-Sheba, og tell folket, så jeg kan vite hvor mange de er.»

For the king said to Joab the captain of the host, which was with him, Go now through all the tribes of Israel, from Dan even to Beer-sheba, and number ye the people, that I may know the number of the people.

Joab sa til kongen: «Måtte Herren din Gud legge til folket, uansett hvor mange de er, hundrefold, så min herre kongen kan se det. Men hvorfor har min herre kongen behag i dette?»

And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

Men kongens ordre var sterkere enn Joab og hærførerne. Så dro Joab og hærførerne ut fra kongens nærvær for å telle folket i Israel.

Notwithstanding the king's word prevailed against Joab, and against the captains of the host. And Joab and the captains of the host went out from the presence of the king, to number the people of Israel.

De krysset Jordan og slo leir i Aroer, på høyre side av byen som ligger midt i Gad-dalen, mot Jaser.

And they passed over Jordan, and pitched in Aroer, on the right side of the city that lieth in the midst of the river of Gad, and toward Jazer:

Så kom de til Gilead og til landet Tahtim-Hodshi, og de kom til Dan-Jaan og omkring Sidon.

Then they came to Gilead, and to the land of Tahtim-hodshi; and they came to Dan-jaan, and about to Zidon,

De kom til festningen i Tyrus og til alle Hivittenes og Kana’anittenes byer. Så dro de til sør i Juda, helt til Be’er-Sheba.

And came to the strong hold of Tyre, and to all the cities of the Hivites, and of the Canaanites: and they went out to the south of Judah, even to Beer-sheba.

Da de hadde reist gjennom hele landet, kom de tilbake til Jerusalem etter ni måneder og tjue dager.

So when they had gone through all the land, they came to Jerusalem at the end of nine months and twenty days.

Joab ga kongen tallet på folket som var talt opp: Det var åtte hundre tusen tapre menn i Israel som kunne trekke sverd, og i Juda var det fem hundre tusen menn.

And Joab gave up the sum of the number of the people unto the king: and there were in Israel eight hundred thousand valiant men that drew the sword; and the men of Judah were five hundred thousand men.

Etter at David hadde talt opp folket, slo hjertet hans ham. David sa til Herren: «Jeg har syndet stort i det jeg har gjort. Nå ber jeg deg, Herre, ta bort din tjeners synd, for jeg har handlet veldig uklokt.»

And David's heart smote him after that he had numbered the people. And David said unto the LORD, I have sinned greatly in that I have done: and now, I beseech thee, O LORD, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.

Da David sto opp om morgenen, kom Herrens ord til profeten Gad, Davids seer, og sa:

For when David was up in the morning, the word of the LORD came unto the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying,

«Gå og si til David: Så sier Herren: Jeg gir deg tre valg; velg ett av dem, så jeg kan gjøre det mot deg.»

Go and say unto David, Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.

Gad kom til David og fortalte ham dette, og sa: «Skal det komme sju år med hungersnød i ditt land? Eller vil du flykte for dine fiender i tre måneder, mens de forfølger deg? Eller skal det være tre dager med pest i ditt land? Tenk nøye og se hva svar jeg skal gi ham som sendte meg.»

So Gad came to David, and told him, and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee in thy land? or wilt thou flee three months before thine enemies, while they pursue thee? or that there be three days' pestilence in thy land? now advise, and see what answer I shall return to him that sent me.

David sa til Gad: «Jeg er i en stor nød. La oss nå falle i Herrens hånd, for hans barmhjertighet er stor. Men la meg ikke falle i menneskers hånd.»

And David said unto Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.

Herren sendte da en pest over Israel fra morgenen til den fastsatte tid, og det døde sytti tusen menn fra Dan til Be’er-Sheba.

So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel from the morning even to the time appointed: and there died of the people from Dan even to Beer-sheba seventy thousand men.

Og da engelen rakte ut hånden mot Jerusalem for å ødelegge det, angret Herren det onde og sa til engelen som ødela folket: «Det er nok; hold tilbake din hånd.» Herrens engel var ved treskeplassen til Arauna, jebusitten.

And when the angel stretched out his hand upon Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD repented him of the evil, and said to the angel that destroyed the people, It is enough: stay now thine hand. And the angel of the LORD was by the threshingplace of Araunah the Jebusite.

David talte til Herren da han så engelen som slo folket, og sa: «Se, jeg har syndet, og jeg har handlet ondt. Men disse fårene, hva har de gjort? Jeg ber, la din hånd være mot meg og min fars hus.»

And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house.

Samme dag kom Gad til David og sa til ham: «Gå opp og reis et alter for Herren på treskeplassen til Arauna, jebusitten.»

And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite.

David gikk opp i henhold til Guds ord, som Herren hadde befalt.

And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the LORD commanded.

Arauna så opp og fikk se kongen og hans tjenere komme mot ham. Og Arauna gikk ut og bøyde seg for kongen med ansiktet mot jorden.

And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground.

Arauna spurte: «Hvorfor kommer min herre kongen til sin tjener?» David svarte: «For å kjøpe treskeplassen fra deg, for å bygge et alter for Herren, slik at plagen kan stanse blant folket.»

And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the LORD, that the plague may be stayed from the people.

Arauna sa til David: «La min herre kongen ta og ofre det som synes godt for ham. Her er oksene til brennoffer og treskinskapene og alt utstyret fra oksene til ved.»

And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood.

Alt dette, som en konge, ga Arauna til kongen. Og Arauna sa til kongen: «Måtte Herren din Gud akseptere deg.»

All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The LORD thy God accept thee.

Kongen svarte Arauna: «Nei, men jeg vil kjøpe det av deg for en pris. Jeg vil ikke ofre brennoffer til Herren min Gud av det som ikke koster meg noe.» Så kjøpte David treskeplassen og oksene for femti sjekel sølv.

And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver.

David bygde et alter for Herren der, og ofret brennoffer og fredsoffer. Så lyttet Herren til bønnen for landet, og plagen opphørte i Israel.

And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the LORD was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
