Da kom alle Israels stammer til David i Hebron og sa: Se, vi er ditt bein og ditt kjøtt.

Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh.

Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel.

Så kom alle Israels eldste til kongen i Hebron, og kong David inngikk en pakt med dem i Hebron for Herrens ansikt, og de salvet David til konge over Israel.

So all the elders of Israel came to the king to Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the LORD: and they anointed David king over Israel.

David var tretti år gammel da han begynte å regjere, og han regjerte i førti år.

David was thirty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned forty years.

I Hebron regjerte han over Juda i sju år og seks måneder, og i Jerusalem regjerte han i trettitre år over hele Israel og Juda.

In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years over all Israel and Judah.

Kongen og hans menn dro til Jerusalem for å angripe jebusittene, som bodde der. De sa til David: Du kommer ikke inn her før du har fjernet de blinde og halte! De tenkte: David kan ikke komme inn her.

And the king and his men went to Jerusalem unto the Jebusites, the inhabitants of the land: which spake unto David, saying, Except thou take away the blind and the lame, thou shalt not come in hither: thinking, David cannot come in hither.

Likevel inntok David Sions borg, som nå er kjent som Davids by.

Nevertheless David took the strong hold of Zion: the same is the city of David.

Den dagen sa David: Den som først når vannrennen og slår jebusittene, de lamme og blinde som Davids sjel avskyr, han skal bli høvding og kommandant. Derfor sier man: De blinde og halte skal ikke komme inn i huset.

And David said on that day, Whosoever getteth up to the gutter, and smiteth the Jebusites, and the lame and the blind, that are hated of David's soul, he shall be chief and captain. Wherefore they said, The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.

David bosatte seg i borgen og kalte den Davids by. Han bygde opp området rundt fra Millo og innover.

So David dwelt in the fort, and called it the city of David. And David built round about from Millo and inward.

David ble stadig mektigere, for Herren, hærskarenes Gud, var med ham.

And David went on, and grew great, and the LORD God of hosts was with him.

Hiram, kongen av Tyros, sendte budbringere til David, sammen med sedertre, tømmermenn og steinhoggere, og de bygde et hus for David.

And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar trees, and carpenters, and masons: and they built David an house.

David innså at Herren hadde stadfestet ham som konge over Israel og opphøyd hans kongedømme for sitt folk Israels skyld.

And David perceived that the LORD had established him king over Israel, and that he had exalted his kingdom for his people Israel's sake.

Etter at David kom fra Hebron, tok han seg flere medhustruer og hustruer fra Jerusalem, og flere sønner og døtre ble født til David.

And David took him more concubines and wives out of Jerusalem, after he was come from Hebron: and there were yet sons and daughters born to David.

And these be the names of those that were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shammua, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon,

Elisjama, Eliada, og Elifelet.

And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphalet.

Men da filisterne hørte at David var blitt salvet til konge over Israel, kom alle filisterne opp for å søke etter David. Da David hørte det, gikk han ned til festningen.

But when the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines came up to seek David; and David heard of it, and went down to the hold.

Filisterne kom og spredte seg ut i Refaim-dalen.

The Philistines also came and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

David spurte Herren og sa: Skal jeg dra opp mot filisterne? Vil du overgi dem i mine hender? Herren sa til David: Dra opp, for jeg vil visselig overgi filisterne i dine hender.

And David inquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up to the Philistines? wilt thou deliver them into mine hand? And the LORD said unto David, Go up: for I will doubtless deliver the Philistines into thine hand.

David kom til Ba'al-Perasim, og der slo han dem. Han sa: Herren har brutt gjennom mine fiender foran meg, som vannet bryter gjennom. Derfor kalte han stedet Ba'al-Perasim.

And David came to Baal-perazim, and David smote them there, and said, The LORD hath broken forth upon mine enemies before me, as the breach of waters. Therefore he called the name of that place Baal-perazim.

De etterlot seg avgudene sine der, og David og hans menn brente dem.

And there they left their images, and David and his men burned them.

Filisterne kom igjen opp og spredte seg i Refaim-dalen.

And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim.

Da David spurte Herren, sa han: Du skal ikke dra opp, men dra rundt bak dem og angrip dem foran morbærtrærne.

And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees.

Når du hører lyden av marsjering i toppen av morbærtrærne, da skal du raskt gå til angrep, for da skal Herren dra ut foran deg for å slå filisternes hær.

And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines.

David gjorde som Herren hadde befalt ham, og han slo filisterne fra Geba helt til du kommer til Gezer.

And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer.
