I den tidligere fortellingen skrev jeg, kjære Teofilus, om alt Jesus begynte å gjøre og lære,

The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teh,

inntil den dagen han ble tatt opp til himmelen, etter at han ved Den Hellige Ånd hadde gitt befalinger til apostlene han hadde utvalgt.

Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:

Han viste seg også for dem som levende etter sin lidelse, med mange overbevisende bevis, da han viste seg for dem i førti dager og talte om det som hører Guds rike til.

To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:

Og mens han var sammen med dem, ga han dem befaling om ikke å forlate Jerusalem, men å vente på det som Faderen hadde lovt, som dere har hørt fra meg.

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.

For Johannes døpte med vann, men dere skal bli døpt med Den Hellige Ånd om ikke mange dager.

For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

Da de var samlet, spurte de ham: Herre, vil du på denne tiden gjenreise riket for Israel?

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?

Han svarte: Det er ikke for dere å vite tider eller tidsperioder som Faderen har lagt under sin egen myndighet.

And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.

Men dere skal få kraft når Den Hellige Ånd kommer over dere, og dere skal være mine vitner både i Jerusalem, i hele Judea og Samaria, og helt til jordens ender.

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Etter at han hadde sagt dette, mens de så på, ble han løftet opp, og en sky tok ham bort fra øynene deres.

And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.

Mens de stirret opp mot himmelen mens han for bort, se, da sto to menn i hvite klær ved siden av dem.

And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

Og de sa: Menn fra Galilea, hvorfor står dere og ser opp mot himmelen? Denne Jesus, som er tatt opp fra dere til himmelen, skal komme igjen på samme måte som dere har sett ham fare opp til himmelen.

Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Da vendte de tilbake til Jerusalem fra fjellet som kalles Oljeberget, som ligger nær Jerusalem, en sabbatssreise unna.

Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a sabbath day's journey.

Da de kom inn i byen, gikk de opp i den øvre salen der de bodde, både Peter, Johannes, Jakob, Andreas, Filip, Tomas, Bartolomeus, Matteus, Jakob, Alfeus' sønn, Simon seloten, og Judas, Jakobs bror.

And when they were come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode both Peter, and James, and John, and Andrew, Philip, and Thomas, Bartholomew, and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon Zelotes, and Judas the brother of James.

Alle disse fortsatte med én sinn i bønn og påkallelse, sammen med kvinnene og Maria, Jesu mor, og med hans brødre.

These all continued with one cord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

I de dager sto Peter fram blant disiplene (det var omkring hundre og tjue navn på listen) og sa:

And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples, and said, (the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty,)

Brødre, denne Skriften måtte oppfylles, som Den Hellige Ånd gjennom Davids munn talte om Judas, som ble veiviser for dem som arresterte Jesus.

Men and brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

For han var regnet blant oss og hadde del i denne tjenesten.

For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.

Denne mannen skaffet seg en åker for belønningen han fikk for sin urett, og da han stupte forover, sprakk kroppen hans, og alle innvollene hans veltet ut.

Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out.

Dette ble kjent av alle dem som bodde i Jerusalem, slik at åkeren ble kalt Hakeldama på deres eget språk; det betyr Blodåkeren.

And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, eldama, that is to say, The field of blood.

For det står skrevet i Salmenes bok: "La hans bosted bli øde, og la ingen bo der," og: "La en annen overta hans embete."

For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.

Derfor må en av de mennene som har vært sammen med oss hele tiden Herren Jesus gikk inn og ut blant oss,

Wherefore of these men which have companied with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us,

fra Johannes’ dåp til den dagen han ble tatt opp fra oss, bli utvalgt til å være et vitne med oss om hans oppstandelse.

Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.

De foreslo to menn: Josef, som kalles Barsabbas, med tilnavnet Justus, og Mattias.

And they appointed two, Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias.

De ba og sa: Du, Herre, som kjenner alle menneskers hjerter, vis oss hvem av disse to du har utvalgt,

And they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which knowest the hearts of all men, shew whether of these two thou hast chosen,

til å ta del i denne tjenesten og apostelembetet, som Judas falt fra for å gå til sin egen plass.

That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own ple.

Og de kastet lodd, og loddet falt på Mattias, og han ble regnet med de elleve apostlene.

And they gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
