På den tiden la kong Herodes hånd på noen av menigheten for å plage dem.

Now about that time Herod the king stretched forth his hands to vex certain of the church.

Og han drepte Jakob, broren til Johannes, med sverd.

And he killed James the brother of John with the sword.

Og fordi han så at det var til glede for jødene, fortsatte han med å gripe Peter også. (Det var de usyrede brøds dager.)

And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.)

Og da han hadde tatt Peter, satte han ham i fengsel og overlot ham til fire skift med soldater for å vokte ham, med planer om å føre ham fram for folket etter påske.

And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after Easter to bring him forth to the people.

Peter ble derfor holdt i fengsel, men menigheten ba uten opphør til Gud for ham.

Peter therefore was kept in prison: but prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him.

Og den natten Herodes ville føre ham fram, sov Peter mellom to soldater, bundet med to lenker, mens vokterne holdt vakt ved døren til fengselet.

And when Herod would have brought him forth, the same night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains: and the keepers before the door kept the prison.

Og se, Herrens engel sto foran ham, og et lys skinte i fengselet. Han slo Peter på siden og vekket ham, og sa: Stå opp raskt. Og lenkene falt av hendene hans.

And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands.

Og engelen sa til ham: Knyt beltet om deg og ta på deg sandalene. Og han gjorde det. Og han sa til ham: Kast kappen omkring deg og følg meg.

And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me.

Og han gikk ut og fulgte ham; han visste ikke at det som ble gjort av engelen var virkelig, men trodde han så et syn.

And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he saw a vision.

Da de var forbi den første og den andre vaktposten, kom de til jernporten som førte inn til byen, og den åpnet seg for dem av seg selv. De gikk ut og fortsatte gjennom én gate, og straks forlot engelen ham.

When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own cord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him.

Da Peter kom til seg selv, sa han: Nå vet jeg for sikkert at Herren har sendt sin engel og har befridd meg fra Herodes' hånd, og fra alt jødefolkets forventning.

And when Peter was come to himself, he said, Now I know of a surety, that the Lord hath sent his angel, and hath delivered me out of the hand of Herod, and from all the expectation of the people of the Jews.

Da han hadde forstått dette, gikk han til huset til Maria, moren til Johannes, som også ble kalt Markus, hvor mange hadde samlet seg for å be.

And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

Og mens Peter banket på portdøren, kom en tjenestepike ut for å høre, hun het Rhoda.

And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

Da hun kjente igjen Peters røst, åpnet hun ikke porten av glede, men løp inn og fortalte at Peter sto foran porten.

And when she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

De sa til henne: Du er gal. Men hun sto fast på at det var slik. Da sa de: Det er hans engel.

And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

Men Peter fortsatte å banke, og da de åpnet døren og så ham, ble de forskrekket.

But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

Han gjorde tegn til dem med hånden om å være stille og fortalte dem hvordan Herren hadde ført ham ut av fengselet. Og han sa: Meld fra om dette til Jakob og brødrene. Deretter dro han til et annet sted.

But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their pee, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another ple.

Da det ble dag, var det stor oppstandelse blant soldatene om hva som hadde skjedd med Peter.

Now as soon as it was day, there was no small stir among the soldiers, what was become of Peter.

Da Herodes lette etter ham og ikke fant ham, forhørte han vokterne og befalte at de skulle henrettes. Deretter dro han ned fra Judea til Cæsarea og ble der.

And when Herod had sought for him, and found him not, he examined the keepers, and commanded that they should be put to death. And he went down from Judaea to Caesarea, and there abode.

Herodes var svært misfornøyd med folket i Tyrus og Sidon, men de kom enstemmig til ham, og etter å ha vunnet kongens kammerherre Blastus' vennskap, ba de om fred, fordi landet deres fikk forsyninger fra kongens land.

And Herod was highly displeased with them of Tyre and Sidon: but they came with one cord to him, and, having made Blastus the king's chamberlain their friend, desired pee; because their country was nourished by the king's country.

På en fastsatt dag var Herodes kledd i kongelig drakt, satt på tronen sin, og holdt en tale til dem.

And upon a set day Herod, arrayed in royal apparel, sat upon his throne, and made an oration unto them.

Folket ropte: Det er en guds røst, ikke et menneskes.

And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man.

Straks slo Herrens engel ham, fordi han ikke ga Gud ære, og han ble spist av ormer og døde.

And immediately the angel of the Lord smote him, because he gave not God the glory: and he was eaten of worms, and gave up the ghost.

Men Guds ord vokste og ble mange.

But the word of God grew and multiplied.

Og Barnabas og Saul vendte tilbake fra Jerusalem da de hadde fullført tjenesten sin, og tok med seg Johannes, som også ble kalt Markus.

And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.
