I menigheten i Antiokia var det noen profeter og lærere: Barnabas, Simeon som ble kalt Niger, Lucius fra Kyrene, Manaen som var fostret opp med Herodes landsfyrsten, og Saulus.

Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and tehers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

Mens de tjente Herren og fastet, sa Den Hellige Ånd: Skil ut for meg Barnabas og Saulus til det arbeidet jeg har kalt dem til.

As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

Da de hadde fastet og bedt, la de hendene på dem og sendte dem av sted.

And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

Sendt av Den Hellige Ånd dro de til Selevkia og seilte derfra til Kypros.

So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

Da de kom til Salamis, forkynte de Guds ord i jødenes synagoger; de hadde også Johannes med seg som hjelper.

And when they were at Salamis, they prehed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

Da de hadde reist gjennom hele øya til Pafos, møtte de en trollmann, en falsk profet som het Barjesus, en jøde.

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Bar-jesus:

Han var sammen med landshøvdingen Sergius Paulus, en forstandig mann. Han tilkalte Barnabas og Saulus og ønsket å høre Guds ord.

Which was with the deputy of the country, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man; who called for Barnabas and Saul, and desired to hear the word of God.

Men Elymas, trollmannen (som navnet hans betyr), motsto dem og forsøkte å vende landshøvdingen bort fra troen.

But Elymas the sorcerer (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the deputy from the faith.

Da, fylt av Den Hellige Ånd, så Saulus (som også kalles Paulus) ham rett i øynene

Then Saul, (who also is called Paul,) filled with the Holy Ghost, set his eyes on him,

og sa: Du som er full av all svik og ondskap, du djevelens sønn, du fiende av all rettferdighet! Vil du ikke slutte å forvrenge Herrens rette veier?

And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

Og se, Herrens hånd er over deg, og du skal bli blind og ikke se solen en tid. Straks falt det en tåke og mørke over ham, og han famlet etter noen som kunne lede ham.

And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness; and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

Da landshøvdingen så hva som skjedde, ble han troende, slått av undring over Herrens lære.

Then the deputy, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

Paulus og hans følge satte seil fra Pafos og kom til Perge i Pamfylia. Johannes forlot dem der og vendte tilbake til Jerusalem.

Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

Men de reiste videre fra Perge og kom til Antiokia i Pisidia. På sabbaten gikk de inn i synagogen og satte seg.

But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

Etter opplesningen av loven og profetene sendte synagogens ledere bud til dem og sa: Brødre, har dere noen formaning til folket, så si det.

And after the reading of the law and the prophets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on.

Da reiste Paulus seg og vinket med hånden og sa: Israelitter, og dere som ærer Gud, hør på meg.

Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel, and ye that fear God, give audience.

Israels folkets Gud valgte ut våre fedre og lot folket vokse mens de bodde som fremmede i Egypt. Med utstrakt arm førte han dem ut derfra.

The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an high arm brought he them out of it.

I omtrent førti år viste han tålmodighet med dem i ørkenen.

And about the time of forty years suffered he their manners in the wilderness.

Han utryddet sju folkeslag i Kanaans land og ga dem landet som arv ved loddkasting.

And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

Etter dette ga han dem dommere i omtrent 450 år, inntil profeten Samuel.

And after that he gave unto them judges about the spe of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

Så ba de om en konge, og Gud ga dem Saul, sønn av Kisj, av Benjamins stamme, i førti år.

And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the spe of forty years.

Etter at han hadde avsatt ham, oppreiste Gud David som konge over dem. Om ham vitnet Gud: ‘Jeg har funnet David, Isais sønn, en mann etter mitt hjerte, som skal oppfylle all min vilje.’

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.

Av hans ætt har Gud, etter sitt løfte, oppreist en frelser for Israel, Jesus.

Of this man's seed hath God cording to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:

Før hans komme hadde Johannes forkynt omvendelsesdåp for hele Israels folk.

When John had first prehed before his coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

Og da Johannes fullførte sitt oppdrag, sa han: ‘Hvem tror dere at jeg er? Jeg er ikke han. Men, se, det kommer en etter meg, hvis skoreimer jeg ikke er verdig til å løse.’

And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there cometh one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

Brødre, barna av Abrahams ætt, og de blant dere som frykter Gud, til dere er dette frelsens ord sendt.

Men and brethren, children of the stock of Abraham, and whosoever among you feareth God, to you is the word of this salvation sent.

For de som bor i Jerusalem og deres ledere kjente ham ikke og dømte ham, og ved å oppfylle profetenes stemmer, som blir lest hver sabbat, dømte de ham til døden.

For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

Og selv om de ikke fant noen grunn til dødsstraff, ba de Pilatus å få ham henrettet.

And though they found no cause of death in him, yet desired they Pilate that he should be slain.

And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree, and laid him in a sepulchre.

Men Gud reiste ham opp fra de døde.

But God raised him from the dead:

Han ble sett i mange dager av dem som fulgte ham fra Galilea til Jerusalem, som nå er hans vitner blant folket.

And he was seen many days of them which came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are his witnesses unto the people.

Vi forkynner dere det gode budskap, at løftet gitt til fedrene,

And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,

har Gud oppfylt overfor oss, deres barn, ved å oppreise Jesus, slik det står skrevet i andre salme: ‘Du er min Sønn, i dag har jeg født deg.’

God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

Og om at han reiste ham opp fra de døde, for aldri mer å vende tilbake til fordervelsen, har Gud sagt: ‘Jeg vil gi dere Davids trofaste løfter.’

And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.

Derfor sier han også i en annen salme: ‘Du vil ikke la din Hellige se fordervelse.’

Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

For David, etter å ha tjent Gud i sin generasjon, sov inn, ble forent med sine fedre, og så fordervelse.

For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

Men han som Gud reiste opp, så ikke fordervelse.

But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

La det være kjent for dere, brødre, at ved denne mannen blir syndenes tilgivelse forkynt for dere.

Be it known unto you therefore, men and brethren, that through this man is prehed unto you the forgiveness of sins:

Og gjennom ham blir alle som tror rettferdiggjort fra alt det dere ikke kunne bli rettferdiggjort fra ved Mose lov.

And by him all that believe are justified from all things, from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

Vokt dere derfor, så det som er sagt i profetene, ikke kommer over dere.

Beware therefore, lest that come upon you, which is spoken of in the prophets;

Se, dere foraktelige, undre dere og forsvinn bort, for jeg gjør en gjerning i deres dager, en gjerning dere ikke vil tro, selv om noen forteller den til dere.

Behold, ye despisers, and wonder, and perish: for I work a work in your days, a work which ye shall in no wise believe, though a man declare it unto you.

Da jødene gikk ut av synagogen, ba hedningene om at disse ordene også måtte bli forkynt for dem neste sabbat.

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be prehed to them the next sabbath.

Da forsamlingen var oppløst, fulgte mange av jødene og av de gudfryktige proselyttene Paulus og Barnabas, som talte med dem og oppmuntret dem til å fortsette i Guds nåde.

Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the gre of God.

Neste sabbat kom nesten hele byen sammen for å høre Guds ord.

And the next sabbath day came almost the whole city together to hear the word of God.

Men da jødene så folkemengdene, ble de fylt av misunnelse, og de motsa det Paulus sa og spottet.

But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

Da talte Paulus og Barnabas med frimodighet, og sa: Det var nødvendig at Guds ord først ble forkynt for dere. Men siden dere forkaster det og dømmer dere selv uverdige til evig liv, vender vi oss mot hedningene.

Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles.

For slik har Herren befalt oss: ‘Jeg har satt deg til å være et lys for hedningene, så du kan bringe frelse til jordens ender.’

For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth.

Da hedningene hørte dette, ble de glade og æret Herrens ord. Alle som var utvalgt til evig liv, kom til tro.

And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

Herrens ord spredte seg gjennom hele området.

And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

Men jødene oppviglet de gudfryktige og ansette kvinnene og byens ledende menn, oppviglet en forfølgelse mot Paulus og Barnabas, og drev dem ut av deres grenser.

But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

Men de børstet støvet av føttene av seg mot dem og dro til Ikonium.

But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium.

Disiplene ble fylt med glede og med Den Hellige Ånd.

And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.
