Menn, brødre og fedre, hør mitt forsvar som jeg nå legger fram for dere.

Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence which I make now unto you.

(Og da de hørte at han talte til dem på hebraisk, ble de enda roligere, og han sa,

(And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith,)

Jeg er en jøde, født i Tarsus i Kilikia, men oppvokst her i byen ved Gamaliels føtter, opplært etter våre fedres lovs strenge krav og nidkjær for Gud, slik dere alle er i dag.

I am verily a man which am a Jew, born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, and taught cording to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.

Jeg forfulgte denne veien til døden, fanget og kastet både menn og kvinner i fengsel.

And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.

Det kan overpresten og hele lederskapet blant de eldste vitne om for meg. Fra dem mottok jeg også brev til brødrene og dro til Damaskus for å føre dem som var der i lenker til Jerusalem for å bli straffet.

As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.

Men det skjedde, da jeg var på vei og nærmet meg Damaskus omkring middagstid, at et sterkt lys plutselig strålte rundt meg fra himmelen.

And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.

Og jeg falt til jorden og hørte en stemme som sa til meg: Saul, Saul, hvorfor forfølger du meg?

And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?

Jeg spurte: Hvem er du, Herre? Og han svarte meg: Jeg er Jesus fra Nasaret, han som du forfølger.

And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.

De som var med meg så virkelig lyset, men de hørte ikke stemmen til ham som talte til meg.

And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.

Og jeg spurte: Hva skal jeg gjøre, Herre? Og Herren sa til meg: Stå opp og gå inn i Damaskus, der skal du få beskjed om alt som er bestemt for deg å gjøre.

And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.

Og siden jeg ikke kunne se på grunn av glansen fra det lyset, ble jeg ledet ved hånden av dem som var med meg, og kom inn i Damaskus.

And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.

En mann ved navn Ananias, en gudfryktig mann etter loven, som hadde godt omdømme blant alle jødene som bodde der,

And one Ananias, a devout man cording to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there,

kom til meg, sto ved min side og sa: Bror Saul, bli seende. Og i samme stund kunne jeg se på ham.

Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.

Han sa: Våre fedres Gud har utvalgt deg til å kjenne hans vilje, til å se den Rettferdige og til å høre stemmen fra hans munn.

And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.

For du skal være hans vitne for alle mennesker om det du har sett og hørt.

For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.

Og nå, hvorfor nøler du? Stå opp, la deg døpe og bli renset fra dine synder, idet du påkaller Herrens navn.

And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

Og det skjedde, da jeg kom tilbake til Jerusalem og ba i tempelet, at jeg fikk et syn

And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;

og så ham si til meg: Skynd deg, dra raskt bort fra Jerusalem, for de vil ikke motta ditt vitnesbyrd om meg.

And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.

Og jeg sa: Herre, de vet at jeg fengslet og slo dem som trodde på deg i hver synagoge,

And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:

og da blodet ble utgytt av din martyr Stefanus, sto jeg også der som vitne, gikk med på hans henrettelse og holdt klærne til dem som slo ham i hjel.

And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.

Og han sa til meg: Dra av sted, for jeg vil sende deg langt bort til hedningene.

And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

De hørte ham til dette ordet, og da hevet de sine stemmer og sa: Bort med en slik mann fra jorden, for han fortjener ikke å leve.

And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.

Mens de ropte og kastet av seg klærne og slengte støv i luften,

And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the air,

befalte kommandanten at han skulle bli ført inn i festningen, og han beordret at han skulle avhøres under pisking for å finne ut hvorfor de ropte slik mot ham.

The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

Da de hadde bundet ham med remmer, sa Paulus til centurionen som sto der: Er det lovlig for dere å piske en romersk borger uten dom?

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

Da centurionen hørte det, gikk han til kommandanten og sa: Pass deg for hva du gjør, for denne mannen er en romersk borger.

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.

Kommandanten kom da til ham og sa: Fortell meg, er du en romersk borger? Han svarte: Ja.

Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

Og kommandanten svarte: Jeg kjøpte denne borgerretten for en stor sum penger. Men Paulus sa: Jeg er født som fri borger.

And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was free born.

De som skulle forhøre ham, trakk seg straks bort fra ham. Og kommandanten ble også redd for, etter at han visste at han var en romersk borger, og fordi han hadde bundet ham.

Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

Neste dag, fordi han ønsket å få vite med sikkerhet hva jødene anklaget ham for, løste han ham fra lenkene og befalte at overprestene og hele rådets forsamling skulle samles, og han førte Paulus ned og stilte ham foran dem.

On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was cused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
