And when it was determined that we should sail into Italy, they delivered Paul and certain other prisoners unto one named Julius, a centurion of Augustus' band.

And entering into a ship of Adramyttium, we launched, meaning to sail by the coasts of Asia; one Aristarchus, a Medonian of Thessalonica, being with us.

Dagen etter la vi til ved Sidon. Julius behandlet Paulus vennlig og ga ham tillatelse til å besøke vennene sine for å få seg litt mat.

And the next day we touched at Sidon. And Julius courteously entreated Paul, and gave him liberty to go unto his friends to refresh himself.

And when we had launched from thence, we sailed under Cyprus, because the winds were contrary.

And when we had sailed over the sea of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we came to Myra, a city of Lycia.

Der fant offiseren et skip fra Alexandria som skulle til Italia, og han fikk oss om bord.

And there the centurion found a ship of Alexandria sailing into Italy; and he put us therein.

Vi seilte langsomt i mange dager og kom knapt forbi Knidos, siden vinden hindret oss, og vi seilte under Kreta langs Salmone.

And when we had sailed slowly many days, and scarce were come over against Cnidus, the wind not suffering us, we sailed under Crete, over against Salmone;

Med nød og neppe passerte vi det og kom til et sted som kalles gode havner, nær byen Lasea.

And, hardly passing it, came unto a ple which is called The fair havens; nigh whereunto was the city of Lasea.

Da mye tid var gått, og det nå var farlig å seile fordi fasten var over, advarte Paulus dem.

Now when much time was spent, and when sailing was now dangerous, because the fast was now already past, Paul admonished them,

Han sa til dem: «Menn, jeg ser at denne reisen vil bringe skade og store tap, ikke bare for lasten og skipet, men også for våre liv.»

And said unto them, Sirs, I perceive that this voyage will be with hurt and much damage, not only of the lading and ship, but also of our lives.

Men offiseren stolte mer på kapteinen og skipets eier enn på det Paulus sa.

Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship, more than those things which were spoken by Paul.

Og siden havnen ikke var egnet for overvintring, rådet flertallet til å sette ut derfra, hvis de på noen måte kunne nå Foinike og overvintre der, en havn på Kreta som vender mot sørvest og nordvest.

And because the haven was not commodious to winter in, the more part advised to depart thence also, if by any means they might attain to Phenice, and there to winter; which is an haven of Crete, and lieth toward the south west and north west.

Da vinden fra sør blåste mildt, trodde de at de hadde oppnådd sitt mål, og satte ut fra Kreta.

And when the south wind blew softly, supposing that they had obtained their purpose, loosing thence, they sailed close by Crete.

Men kort tid etter kom en voldsom stormvind kalt Euraquilo.

But not long after there arose against it a tempestuous wind, called Euroclydon.

Da skipet ble fanget av vinden og ikke kunne holde opp mot den, lot vi det drive.

And when the ship was caught, and could not bear up into the wind, we let her drive.

Mens vi drev under en øy som heter Klauda, slet vi hardt for å få kontroll over livbåten.

And running under a certain island which is called Clauda, we had much work to come by the boat:

Etter at de hadde fått den opp, brukte de tau for å binde skipet, og i frykt for å drive på grunn i syrter, slapp de seilet og lot skipet drive.

Which when they had taken up, they used helps, undergirding the ship; and, fearing lest they should fall into the quicksands, strake sail, and so were driven.

Vi ble kraftig kastet rundt av stormen, og dagen etter lettet de skipet.

And we being exceedingly tossed with a tempest, the next day they lightened the ship;

På den tredje dagen kastet vi med egne hender skipsutstyret over bord.

And the third day we cast out with our own hands the tkling of the ship.

Da verken solen eller stjernene hadde vært å se på mange dager, og stormen fortsatt raste, tok alle håp om redning slutt.

And when neither sun nor stars in many days appeared, and no small tempest lay on us, all hope that we should be saved was then taken away.

Etter lang tids frahold fra mat, reiste Paulus seg blant dem og sa: «Menn, dere burde hørt på meg og ikke seilt ut fra Kreta, så dere hadde unngått denne skaden og tapet.

But after long abstinence Paul stood forth in the midst of them, and said, Sirs, ye should have hearkened unto me, and not have loosed from Crete, and to have gained this harm and loss.

Men nå oppfordrer jeg dere til å holde motet oppe, for ingen liv skal gå tapt, bare skipet.

And now I exhort you to be of good cheer: for there shall be no loss of any man's life among you, but of the ship.

I natt sto en engel fra Gud, som jeg tilhører og tjener, hos meg.

For there stood by me this night the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve,

Han sa: 'Frykt ikke, Paulus, du må stå for keiseren; og se, Gud har gitt deg alle som seiler med deg.'

Saying, Fear not, Paul; thou must be brought before Caesar: and, lo, God hath given thee all them that sail with thee.

Derfor, menn, hold motet oppe, for jeg tror Gud at det vil bli slik som det er sagt til meg.

Wherefore, sirs, be of good cheer: for I believe God, that it shall be even as it was told me.

Men vi må kastes på en eller annen øy.»

Howbeit we must be cast upon a certain island.

Da den fjortende natten kom, mens vi drev omkring i Adriahavet, trodde mannskapet ved midnatt at de nærmet seg land.

But when the fourteenth night was come, as we were driven up and down in Adria, about midnight the shipmen deemed that they drew near to some country;

De loddet og fant det tjue favner dypt; litt lengre fremme loddet de igjen og fant det femten favner.

And sounded, and found it twenty fathoms: and when they had gone a little further, they sounded again, and found it fifteen fathoms.

I frykt for å gå på skjær kastet de fire ankere fra bakenden og håpet på dagslys.

Then fearing lest we should have fallen upon rocks, they cast four anchors out of the stern, and wished for the day.

Mens mannskapet ønsket å flykte fra skipet, senket de livbåten ned i sjøen under dekke av å kaste ankere fra forenden.

And as the shipmen were about to flee out of the ship, when they had let down the boat into the sea, under colour as though they would have cast anchors out of the foreship,

Da sa Paulus til offiseren og soldatene: «Hvis ikke disse blir værende i skipet, kan dere ikke bli reddet.»

Paul said to the centurion and to the soldiers, Except these abide in the ship, ye cannot be saved.

Så kuttet soldatene reipene til livbåten og lot den drive bort.

Then the soldiers cut off the ropes of the boat, and let her fall off.

Mens dagen grydde, oppfordret Paulus alle til å ta mat og sa: «Nå er det den fjortende dagen dere har ventet og holdt fasten uten å spise noe.

And while the day was coming on, Paul besought them all to take meat, saying, This day is the fourteenth day that ye have tarried and continued fasting, having taken nothing.

Jeg ber dere derfor ta noe mat, for det er til deres beste; ingen hårstrå skal falle fra hodet på noen av dere.»

Wherefore I pray you to take some meat: for this is for your health: for there shall not an hair fall from the head of any of you.

Da han hadde sagt dette, tok han brød, takket Gud i alles nærvær, brøt det og begynte å spise.

And when he had thus spoken, he took bread, and gave thanks to God in presence of them all: and when he had broken it, he began to eat.

Da ble de alle oppmuntret, og de tok også mat.

Then were they all of good cheer, and they also took some meat.

Vi var til sammen to hundre og syttiseks sjeler om bord i skipet.

And we were in all in the ship two hundred threescore and sixteen souls.

Etter at de hadde spist nok, lettet de skipet ved å kaste hveten i sjøen.

And when they had eaten enough, they lightened the ship, and cast out the wheat into the sea.

And when it was day, they knew not the land: but they discovered a certain creek with a shore, into the which they were minded, if it were possible, to thrust in the ship.

And when they had taken up the anchors, they committed themselves unto the sea, and loosed the rudder bands, and hoised up the mainsail to the wind, and made toward shore.

De traff et sted hvor to hav møttes og grunnstøtte skipet; forstavnen satt fast og ble urørlig, mens akterenden brøt opp av bølgenes kraft.

And falling into a ple where two seas met, they ran the ship aground; and the forepart stuck fast, and remained unmoveable, but the hinder part was broken with the violence of the waves.

Soldatene rådde til å drepe fangene for at ingen skulle svømme unna og rømme.

And the soldiers' counsel was to kill the prisoners, lest any of them should swim out, and escape.

Men offiseren ville redde Paulus og hindret dem i deres plan; han befalte at de som kunne svømme, først skulle kaste seg i sjøen og nå land.

But the centurion, willing to save Paul, kept them from their purpose; and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea, and get to land:

De andre kom seg opp ved hjelp av planker eller vrakrester fra skipet. Slik hendte det at alle slapp trygt i land.

And the rest, some on boards, and some on broken pieces of the ship. And so it came to pass, that they escaped all safe to land.
