Da sa ypperstepresten: Er dette sant?

Then said the high priest, Are these things so?

Og han sa: Menn, brødre og fedre, lytt! Herlighetens Gud viste seg for vår far Abraham da han var i Mesopotamia, før han slo seg ned i Haran.

And he said, Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken; The God of glory appeared unto our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Charran,

Og han sa til ham: Dra ut fra ditt land og fra din slekt, og kom til det landet jeg vil vise deg.

And said unto him, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.

Da dro han ut av kaldeernes land og slo seg ned i Haran. Etter at hans far var død, førte Gud ham til dette landet som dere nå bor i.

Then came he out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and dwelt in Charran: and from thence, when his father was dead, he removed him into this land, wherein ye now dwell.

Men han ga ham ingen arv der, ikke engang nok til å sette sin fot på. Likevel lovte han å gi det til ham som en eiendom og til hans etterkommere etter ham, enda han da ikke hadde noe barn.

And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on: yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when as yet he had no child.

Og Gud talte slik: Hans etterkommere skulle bo som fremmede i et fremmed land, og at de skulle gjøre dem til slaver og hengi dem til ondskap i fire hundre år.

And God spake on this wise, That his seed should sojourn in a strange land; and that they should bring them into bondage, and entreat them evil four hundred years.

Og det folket som de skulle være slaver for, vil jeg dømme, sa Gud. Og etter det skal de komme ut og tjene meg på dette stedet.

And the nation to whom they shall be in bondage will I judge, said God: and after that shall they come forth, and serve me in this ple.

Og han ga ham omskjærelsens pakt. Så avlet Abraham Isak og omskar ham på den åttende dagen, og Isak avlet Jakob, og Jakob avlet de tolv patriarkene.

And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so Abraham begat Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day; and Isaac begat Job; and Job begat the twelve patriarchs.

Og patriarkene ble sjalu og solgte Josef til Egypt, men Gud var med ham.

And the patriarchs, moved with envy, sold Joseph into Egypt: but God was with him,

Han befridde ham fra alle hans trengsler, ga ham nåde og visdom i Faraos, kongen av Egypt, syn, og Farao gjorde ham til hersker over Egypt og over hele sitt hus.

And delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favour and wisdom in the sight of Pharaoh king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

Det ble en hungersnød i hele Egypt og Kanaan, og stor nød, og våre fedre fant ingen mat.

Now there came a dearth over all the land of Egypt and Chanaan, and great affliction: and our fathers found no sustenance.

Da Jakob hørte at det var korn i Egypt, sendte han våre fedre der først.

But when Job heard that there was corn in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

Og ved det andre besøket ble Josef kjent for sine brødre, og Josef gjorde sin slekt kjent for Farao.

And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brethren; and Joseph's kindred was made known unto Pharaoh.

Da sendte Josef bud etter sin far Jakob og hele sin slekt, syttifem i alt.

Then sent Joseph, and called his father Job to him, and all his kindred, threescore and fifteen souls.

Så dro Jakob ned til Egypt, og han døde, han og våre fedre.

So Job went down into Egypt, and died, he, and our fathers,

De ble ført til Sikem, og lagt i graven som Abraham hadde kjøpt for en sum penger fra sønnene til Hemor i Sikem.

And were carried over into Sychem, and laid in the sepulchre that Abraham bought for a sum of money of the sons of Emmor the father of Sychem.

Men da tiden for løftet Gud hadde gitt Abraham nærmet seg, vokste folket og ble tallrikt i Egypt,

But when the time of the promise drew nigh, which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

inntil en annen konge oppsto, som ikke kjente Josef.

Till another king arose, which knew not Joseph.

Denne konge behandlet vårt folk listig, og mishandlet våre fedre, så de kastet ut sine barn for at de ikke skulle leve.

The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live.

I denne tiden ble Moses født, og han var veldig vakker. Han ble oppdratt i tre måneder i sin fars hus.

In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father's house three months:

Da han ble kastet ut, tok Faraos datter ham opp og oppfostret ham som sin egen sønn.

And when he was cast out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

Moses ble opplært i all den egyptiske visdom og var mektig i ord og gjerninger.

And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

Da han var fylt førti år, kom det i hans hjerte å besøke sine brødre, Israels barn.

And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

Da han så en av dem lide urett, forsvarte han ham og hevnet den som var undertrykt, og slo egypteren.

And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

For han trodde hans brødre ville forstå at Gud ved hans hånd ville befri dem, men de forstod det ikke.

For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

Dagen etter viste han seg for dem mens de kranglet, og ville få dem til å bli forlikte, og sa: Menn, dere er brødre; hvorfor gjør dere urett mot hverandre?

And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

Men han som gjorde sin neste urett, skjøv ham bort og sa: Hvem har satt deg til hersker og dommer over oss?

But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

Vil du drepe meg som du drepte egypteren i går?

Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

Da Moses hørte dette, flyktet han og ble en innvandrer i landet Midjan, hvor han fikk to sønner.

Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

Da førti år var gått, viste en Herrens engel seg for ham i en flamme av ild i en tornebusk i ørkenen ved Sinaifjellet.

And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

Da Moses så det, undret han seg over synet, og da han nærmet seg for å se bedre, kom Herrens stemme til ham.

When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,

Jeg er fedrenes Gud, Abrahams Gud, Isaks Gud og Jakobs Gud. Da skalv Moses og våget ikke å se.

Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Job. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

Herren sa til ham: Ta skoene av dine føtter, for stedet du står på er hellig grunn.

Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the ple where thou standest is holy ground.

Jeg har sett mitt folks nød i Egypt, og jeg har hørt deres sukk, og har kommet ned for å befri dem. Og nå, kom, jeg vil sende deg til Egypt.

I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

Denne Moses som de avviste ved å si: Hvem har satt deg til hersker og dommer? Ham har Gud sendt som både hersker og frelser ved en engel som viste seg for ham i busken.

This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

Han førte dem ut og gjorde under og tegn i Egypt, ved Rødehavet, og i ørkenen i førti år.

He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

Det var denne Moses som sa til Israels barn: En profet som meg vil Herren deres Gud oppreise for dere, blant deres brødre. Ham skal dere høre på.

This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

Han var i menigheten i ørkenen sammen med engelen som talte til ham på Sinaifjellet og med våre fedre, og han mottok levende ord for å gi oss.

This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively orles to give unto us:

Til ham ville våre fedre ikke være lydige, men avviste ham og vendte hjertene sine tilbake til Egypt.

To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned bk again into Egypt,

De sa til Aron: Lag oss guder som skal gå foran oss, for hva som har skjedd med denne Moses, som førte oss ut av Egypt, vet vi ikke.

Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

Og de laget en kalv i de dagene, og ofret et offer til avguden, og gledet seg over sine henders verk.

And they made a calf in those days, and offered srifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

Da vendte Gud seg bort og overgav dem til å tilbe himmelens hær. Som det står skrevet i profetenes bok: Har dere ofret meg slaktede dyr og ofre i førti år i ørkenen, Israels hus?

Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and srifices by the spe of forty years in the wilderness?

Nei, dere bar Molochs telt og deres gud Remfans stjerne, bilder som dere laget for å tilbe dem. Derfor vil jeg føre dere bort til Babylon.

Yea, ye took up the tabernle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

Våre fedre hadde vitnesbyrdets telt i ørkenen, slik som Gud hadde befalt Moses å lage det i henhold til mønsteret han hadde sett.

Our fathers had the tabernle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it cording to the fashion that he had seen.

Det ble også våre fedre overlevert til en senere generasjon når de, sammen med Josva, tok det med i besittelsen av hedningene, som Gud drev ut for våre fedres ansikter, inntil Davids dager.

Which also our fathers that came after brought in with Jesus into the possession of the Gentiles, whom God drave out before the fe of our fathers, unto the days of David;

David fant nåde for Gud og ønsket å finne en bolig for Jakobs Gud.

Who found favour before God, and desired to find a tabernle for the God of Job.

Men det var Salomo som bygde ham et hus.

But Solomon built him an house.

Men Den Høyeste bor ikke i templer gjort med hender, som profeten sier:

Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,

Himmelen er min trone, og jorden er min fotskammel. Hva slags hus vil dere bygge meg? sier Herren. Eller hva er stedet for min hvile?

Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the ple of my rest?

Har ikke jeg skapt alt dette med mine hender?

Hath not my hand made all these things?

Dere stivnakkede og uomskårne på hjerte og ører, dere motstår alltid Den Hellige Ånd, slik deres fedre gjorde, så også dere.

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

Hvilke av profetene har ikke deres fedre forfulgt? De drepte dem som forutsagte den Rettferdiges komme, og nå har dere blitt hans forrædere og mordere.

Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? and they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One; of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murderers:

Dere som mottok loven ved englers anvisning, men har ikke holdt den.

Who have received the law by the disposition of angels, and have not kept it.

Da de hørte dette, ble de skjært i hjertet og knirket tenner mot ham.

When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth.

Men han, fylt av Den Hellige Ånd, så opp mot himmelen og så Guds herlighet, og Jesus stående ved Guds høyre hånd.

But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

Og han sa: Se, jeg ser himmelen åpen og Menneskesønnen stå ved Guds høyre hånd.

And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.

Da ropte de høyt, holdt for ørene og kastet seg over ham samstemt.

Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one cord,

De kastet ham ut av byen og steinet ham, og vitnene la ned sine klær ved føttene til en ung mann ved navn Saulus.

And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul.

Mens de steinet Stefanus, påkalte han Gud og sa: Herre Jesus, mottar min ånd.

And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.

Så falt han på kne og ropte med høy stemme: Herre, tilregn dem ikke denne synden. Og da han hadde sagt dette, sovnet han inn.

And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep.
