I det tredje året av Jojakims regjeringstid som konge i Juda kom Nebukadnesar, kongen av Babylon, til Jerusalem og beleiret byen.

In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Juh came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it.

Og Herren ga Jojakim, kongen av Juda, i hans hånd, sammen med noen av karene fra Guds hus. Disse tok han med seg til landet Sinear, til huset til sin gud, og la karene i skattkammeret til sin gud.

And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Juh into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.

Kongen talte til Aspenas, lederen for hoffmennene, om at han skulle bringe noen av Israels barn, både av kongens etterkommere og av de adelige,

And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king's seed, and of the princes;

unge menn uten lyte, vakre og dyktige i all visdom, med kunnskap og forstand i lærdom, skikket til å tjene i kongens palass, for at de kunne læres opp i kaldeernes språk og litteratur.

Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king's palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans.

Kongen bestemte at de skulle få en daglig porsjon av hans egen mat og av vinen han drakk, og de skulle pleies i tre år. Deretter skulle de stå foran kongen.

And the king appointed them a ily provision of the king's meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.

Blant dem var noen fra Judas barn som het Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja.

Now among these were of the children of Juh, niel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:

Herskeren over hoffmennene ga dem nye navn: Daniel ble kalt Beltsasar, Hananja ble kalt Sjadrak, Misjael ble kalt Mesjak, og Asarja ble kalt Abed-Nego.

Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto niel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.

Men Daniel bestemte i sitt hjerte at han ikke ville gjøre seg uren med kongens mat eller med vinen som han drakk. Derfor ba han hoffmennenes leder om å la ham slippe å gjøre seg uren.

But niel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.

Gud hadde skapt velvilje og omsorg for Daniel hos hoffmennenes leder.

Now God had brought niel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs.

Hoffmennenes leder sa til Daniel: «Jeg frykter for min herre kongen, som har bestemt deres mat og drikke, for hva om han ser at ansiktene deres ser dårligere ut enn de andre ungdommene? Da risikerer jeg mitt liv for kongen.»

And the prince of the eunuchs said unto niel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me ennger my head to the king.

Daniel sa til vaktmannen, som hoffmennenes leder hadde satt over Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja:

Then said niel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over niel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

«Prøv oss, vær så snill, i ti dager. La oss få grønnsaker å spise og vann å drikke.

Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten ys; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

Så kan du sammenligne vårt utseende med utseendet til de ungdommene som spiser kongens mat, og behandle dine tjenere i henhold til hva du ser.»

Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king's meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants.

Han gikk med på dette og prøvde dem i ti dager.

So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten ys.

På slutten av de ti dagene så de bedre og sunnere ut enn alle de ungdommene som spiste kongens mat.

And at the end of ten ys their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king's meat.

Så tok vaktmannen bort deres porsjon av maten og vinen de skulle drikke, og ga dem i stedet grønnsaker.

Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.

Gud ga disse fire ungdommene kunnskap og dyktighet i all lærdom og visdom. Daniel fikk også forståelse for alle typer syner og drømmer.

As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and niel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

Da tiden var inne, som kongen hadde sagt, ble de ført inn for Nebukadnesar av hoffmennenes leder.

Now at the end of the ys that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

Kongen samtalte med dem, og blant alle ble ingen funnet som Daniel, Hananja, Misjael og Asarja. Derfor fikk de tjene foran kongen.

And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like niel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king.

I alt det kongen spurte dem om, som krevde visdom og innsikt, fant han dem ti ganger bedre enn alle magikerne og spåmennene i hele hans rike.

And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king inquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.

Daniel ble værende der helt til det første året av kong Kyros.

And niel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
