Når Herren din Gud avskjærer de folkene hvis land Herren din Gud gir deg, og du tar deres plass og bor i deres byer og hus;

When the LORD thy God hath cut off the nations, whose land the LORD thy God giveth thee, and thou succeest them, and dwellest in their cities, and in their houses;

Da skal du skille ut tre byer for deg midt i landet, som Herren din Gud gir deg for å eie det.

Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

Du skal forberede deg en vei, og dele opp landområdene som Herren din Gud gir deg til arv, i tre deler, slik at enhver som har drept noe kan flykte dit.

Thou shalt prepare thee a way, and divi the coasts of thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee to inherit, into three parts, that every slayer may flee thither.

Dette er regelen for den som har drept, som skal flykte dit for å leve: Enhver som dreper sin nabo uaktsomt, uten hat fra før;

And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live: Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly, whom he hated not in time past;

Som når en mann går ut i skogen med sin nabo for å hugge ved, og hånden hans svinger en øks for å felle et tre, og øksehodet løsner fra skaftet og treffer naboen, så han dør; han skal flykte til en av disse byene for å leve:

As when a man goeth into the wood with his neighbour to hew wood, and his hand fetcheth a stroke with the axe to cut down the tree, and the head slippeth from the helve, and lighteth upon his neighbour, that he die; he shall flee unto one of those cities, and live:

For at blodhevnens hevner ikke skal forfølge den som har drept, mens hans hjerte er fylt av vrede, og overmanne ham fordi veien er lang, og drepe ham; til tross for at han ikke var verdig til døden, siden han ikke hatet ham fra før.

Lest the avenger of the blood pursue the slayer, while his heart is hot, and overtake him, because the way is long, and slay him; whereas he was not worthy of ath, inasmuch as he hated him not in time past.

Derfor befaler jeg deg å skille ut tre byer for deg.

Wherefore I command thee, saying, Thou shalt separate three cities for thee.

Og om Herren din Gud utvider ditt område, slik han har lovet dine fedre, og gir deg alt det landet han lovet å gi dine fedre;

And if the LORD thy God enlarge thy coast, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers, and give thee all the land which he promised to give unto thy fathers;

Hvis du holder alle disse budene for å overholde dem, som jeg gir deg i dag, for å elske Herren din Gud og alltid vandre på hans veier; da skal du legge til tre byer til, i tillegg til disse tre:

If thou shalt keep all these commandments to do them, which I command thee this day, to love the LORD thy God, and to walk ever in his ways; then shalt thou add three cities more for thee, besi these three:

For at ikke uskyldig blod skal bli utgytt i ditt land, som Herren din Gud gir deg som arv, og så du blir skyldig i blod.

That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and so blood be upon thee.

Men hvis noen hater sin nabo, og ligger på lur for å overfalle ham og reiser seg mot ham, slår ham i hjel og flykter til en av disse byene:

But if any man hate his neighbour, and lie in wait for him, and rise up against him, and smite him mortally that he die, and fleeth into one of these cities:

Da skal de eldste i hans by sende bud for å hente ham derfra, og overlevere ham til blodhevnens hevner, slik at han kan dø.

Then the elrs of his city shall send and fetch him thence, and liver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die.

Du skal ikke ha medlidenhet med ham, men rense Israel for skylden av uskyldig blod, for at det må gå deg godt.

Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee.

Du skal ikke flytte din nabos grensestein, som de i gamle dager har satt i arven din, som du skal arve, i det landet som Herren din Gud gir deg for å eie det.

Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour's landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it.

Ett vitne skal ikke stå fram mot noen for en misgjerning eller synd, i noen synd han har begått; ved to eller tre vitners munn skal saken stå fast.

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any iniquity, or for any sin, in any sin that he sinneth: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, shall the matter be established.

Hvis et falskt vitne står fram mot noen for å vitne mot ham det som er galt;

If a false witness rise up against any man to testify against him that which is wrong;

Da skal begge mennene, mellom hvem saken er, stå fram for Herren, for prestene og dommerne som skal være i de dager;

Then both the men, between whom the controversy is, shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges, which shall be in those days;

Og dommerne skal gjøre en nøye undersøkelse, og se, hvis vitnet er et falskt vitne, og har vitnet falskt mot sin bror;

And the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and hath testified falsely against his brother;

Da skal dere gjøre mot ham det han tenkte å gjøre mot sin bror; slik skal du få bort ondskapen blant dere.

Then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to have done unto his brother: so shalt thou put the evil away from among you.

Og de som er igjen skal høre og frykte, og aldri mer gjøre noen slik ondskap blant dere.

And those which remain shall hear, and fear, and shall henceforth commit no more any such evil among you.

Du skal ikke vise medlidenhet; liv for liv, øye for øye, tann for tann, hånd for hånd, fot for fot.

And thine eye shall not pity; but life shall go for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.
