Da snudde vi og dro på vår vandring gjennom ørkenen via Rødehavets vei, slik Herren hadde befalt meg. Vi omringet fjellet Seir i mange dager.

Then we turned, and took our journey into the wilrness by the way of the Red sea, as the LORD spake unto me: and we compassed mount Seir many days.

Og Herren talte til meg og sa,

And the LORD spake unto me, saying,

Dere har vært ved dette fjellet lenge nok; vend dere mot nord.

Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward.

Og gi folket befaling og si: Dere skal gå gjennom området til deres brødre, Esaus barn, som bor i Seir; og de skal frykte dere. Pass derfor godt på dere selv.

And command thou the people, saying, Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Seir; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore:

Bland dere ikke med dem; for jeg vil ikke gi dere noe av deres land, ikke en fotbredd engang, for jeg har gitt fjellet Seir til Esau som eiendom.

Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.

Dere skal kjøpe mat av dem for penger, så dere kan spise; og dere skal også kjøpe vann av dem for penger, så dere kan drikke.

Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink.

For Herren din Gud har velsignet deg i alt arbeidet av dine hender. Han kjenner din vandring gjennom denne store ørkenen. I disse førti årene har Herren din Gud vært med deg; du har ikke manglet noe.

For the LORD thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand: he knoweth thy walking through this great wilrness: these forty years the LORD thy God hath been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.

Og da vi passerte våre brødre, Esaus barn, som bodde i Seir, gjennom slettelandet fra Elath og fra Esjon-Geber, snudde vi og dro gjennom ørkenen i Moab.

And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, through the way of the plain from Elath, and from Ezion-gaber, we turned and passed by the way of the wilrness of Moab.

Og Herren sa til meg: Ikke utfordre moabittene, og ikke strid med dem i kamp, for jeg vil ikke gi deg noe av deres land til eiendom, fordi jeg har gitt Ar til Lots barn som eiendom.

And the LORD said unto me, Distress not the Moabites, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give thee of their land for a possession; because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.

Emimene bodde der i gamle dager, et folkeslag stort, mange og høye som anakittene.

The Emims dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims;

De ble også regnet som kjemper, lik anakittene; men moabittene kaller dem emimene.

Which also were accounted giants, as the Anakims; but the Moabites call them Emims.

Horittene bodde også i Seir tidligere, men Esaus barn drev dem ut og bosatte seg i deres sted; slik Israel gjorde med det landet Herren ga dem som eiendom.

The Horims also dwelt in Seir beforetime; but the children of Esau succeed them, when they had stroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.

Nå sa jeg: Reis dere, og gå over bekken Sered. Og vi krysset bekken Sered.

Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered.

Og perioden fra vi kom fra Kadesj-Barnea til vi krysset bekken Sered, var trettiåtte år, frem til hele generasjonen av stridsmenn var borte fra leiren, slik Herren hadde sverget til dem.

And the space in which we came from Kash-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them.

For Herrens hånd var mot dem for å utslette dem fra leiren, helt til de var utryddet.

For ined the hand of the LORD was against them, to stroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

Det skjedde da at alle stridsmennene var utslettet og døde bort fra folket,

So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and ad from among the people,

at Herren talte til meg og sa,

That the LORD spake unto me, saying,

Du skal krysse gjennom Ar, Moabs grense, i dag.

Thou art to pass over through Ar, the coast of Moab, this day:

Og når du kommer nær Ammonittenes barn, ikke plager dem eller går i strid med dem, for jeg vil ikke gi deg noe av ammonittenes land til eiendom, fordi jeg har gitt det til Lots barn som eiendom.

And when thou comest nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give thee of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.

(Det ble også regnet som et land av kjemper: kjemper bodde der i gamle dager, og ammonittene kaller dem zamzumminer;

(That also was accounted a land of giants: giants dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammonites call them Zamzummims;

Et folk stort, mange og høye som anakittene, men Herren ødela dem for ammonittene, og de bosatte seg i deres sted;

A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anakims; but the LORD stroyed them before them; and they succeed them, and dwelt in their stead:

Slik han gjorde for Esaus barn som bodde i Seir, da han ødela horittene foran dem; og de bosatte seg i deres sted til denne dag.

As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Seir, when he stroyed the Horims from before them; and they succeed them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day:

Også avittene, som bodde i landsbyene til Gasa, ble utryddet av kaftorittene, som kom fra Kaftor, og bosatte seg i deres sted.)

And the Avims which dwelt in Hazerim, even unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forth out of Caphtor, stroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

Reis dere, ta fatt på reisen, og gå over elven Arnon. Se, jeg har gitt Sihon amoritten, kongen av Hesjbon, og hans land i din hånd. Begynn å ta det i eie, og gå til kamp mot ham.

Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into thine hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle.

I dag vil jeg begynne å skape redsel for deg og frykt for deg blant alle folk under hele himmelen, som skal høre ryktet om deg og skjelve og være i angst på grunn av deg.

This day will I begin to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the nations that are unr the whole heaven, who shall hear report of thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of thee.

Og jeg sendte bud fra ørkenen i Kedemot til Sihon, kongen av Hesjbon, med fredsord, og sa,

And I sent messengers out of the wilrness of Kemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying,

La meg få gå gjennom ditt land. Jeg vil kun ferdes langs hovedveien, jeg vil ikke vende meg til høyre eller venstre.

Let me pass through thy land: I will go along by the high way, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left.

Du skal selge meg mat for penger, så jeg kan spise, og gi meg vann for penger, så jeg kan drikke. Bare la meg gå gjennom til fots,

Thou shalt sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet;

slik Esaus barn som bor i Seir og moabittene som bor i Ar, gjorde for meg, inntil jeg går over Jordan til landet som Herren vår Gud gir oss.

(As the children of Esau which dwell in Seir, and the Moabites which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over Jordan into the land which the LORD our God giveth us.

Men Sihon, kongen av Hesjbon, ville ikke la oss gå gjennom, for Herren din Gud hadde forherdet hans ånd og gjort hans hjerte hardt, så han skulle bli overgitt i din hånd, slik som det vises i dag.

But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him: for the LORD thy God harned his spirit, and ma his heart obstinate, that he might liver him into thy hand, as appeareth this day.

Og Herren sa til meg: Se, jeg har begynt å gi Sihon og hans land foran deg. Begynn å ta det i eie, så du kan erverve hans land.

And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have begun to give Sihon and his land before thee: begin to possess, that thou mayest inherit his land.

Da kom Sihon ut mot oss, han og hele hans folk, for å kjempe ved Jahas.

Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

Og Herren vår Gud overgav ham foran oss, og vi slo ham og hans sønner og hele hans folk.

And the LORD our God livered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

Og vi tok alle hans byer på den tiden, og ødela fullstendig menn, kvinner og barn i hver by. Vi lot ingen bli igjen.

And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly stroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

Bare buskapen tok vi som krigsbytte for oss selv, og byttene fra byene som vi tok.

Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took.

Fra Aroer, som ligger ved kanten av Arnons elv, og fra byen som ligger ved elven, helt til Gilead, var det ingen by som var for sterk for oss; Herren vår Gud overgav dem alle til oss.

From Aroer, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one city too strong for us: the LORD our God livered all unto us:

Bare til ammonittenes land kom du ikke, heller ikke til noen sted ved elven Jabbok, ei heller til byene i fjellene, eller til noe annet Herren vår Gud hadde forbudt oss.

Only unto the land of the children of Ammon thou camest not, nor unto any place of the river Jabbok, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORD our God forbad us.
