Og Moses kalte hele Israel til seg og sa: Hør, Israel, lovene og budene som jeg taler i deres ører i dag, så dere kan lære dem, holde dem og gjøre etter dem.

And Moses called all Israel, and said unto them, Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your ears this day, that ye may learn them, and keep, and do them.

Herren vår Gud opprettet en pakt med oss ved Horeb.

The LORD our God ma a covenant with us in Horeb.

Herren gjorde ikke denne pakten med våre fedre, men med oss, alle vi som er her i dag.

The LORD ma not this covenant with our fathers, but with us, even us, who are all of us here alive this day.

Herren snakket med dere ansikt til ansikt på fjellet midt ut fra ilden.

The LORD talked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst of the fire,

Jeg sto mellom Herren og dere på den tiden for å overbringe Herrens ord til dere, for dere var redde for ilden og gikk ikke opp på fjellet, og han sa,

(I stood between the LORD and you at that time, to shew you the word of the LORD: for ye were afraid by reason of the fire, and went not up into the mount;) saying,

Jeg er Herren din Gud, som førte deg ut av Egypt, ut av slavehuset.

I am the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Du skal ikke ha andre guder enn meg.

Thou shalt have none other gods before me.

Du skal ikke lage deg noe utskåret bilde eller noen avbildning av det som er i himmelen ovenfor, eller det som er på jorden nedenfor, eller det som er i vannet under jorden.

Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth:

Du skal ikke tilbe dem eller tjene dem, for jeg, Herren din Gud, er en nidkjær Gud, som straffer fedrenes synd på barna i tredje og fjerde slektsledd av dem som hater meg.

Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me,

Men som viser miskunn mot tusener av dem som elsker meg og holder mine bud.

And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

Du skal ikke misbruke Herrens, din Guds, navn, for Herren vil ikke holde den uskyldig som misbruker hans navn.

Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain: for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Du skal holde sabbatsdagen hellig, slik som Herren din Gud har befalt deg.

Keep the sabbath day to sanctify it, as the LORD thy God hath command thee.

Seks dager skal du arbeide og gjøre all din gjerning.

Six days thou shalt labour, and do all thy work:

Men den syvende dagen er sabbat for Herren din Gud. Da skal du ikke gjøre noe arbeid, verken du, din sønn eller din datter, din tjener eller din tjenestekvinne, din okse, ditt esel eller noe av ditt fe, eller den fremmede som er innenfor dine porter, for at din tjener og din tjenestekvinne kan hvile som du.

But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou.

Husk at du var slave i Egypt, og at Herren din Gud førte deg ut derfra med sterk hånd og utstrakt arm. Derfor har Herren din Gud befalt deg å holde sabbatsdagen.

And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the LORD thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm: therefore the LORD thy God command thee to keep the sabbath day.

Du skal hedre din far og din mor, slik Herren din Gud har befalt deg, så du kan leve lenge og det må gå deg godt i det landet som Herren din Gud gir deg.

Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath command thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Du skal ikke drepe.

Thou shalt not kill.

Du skal ikke drive hor.

Neither shalt thou commit adultery.

Du skal ikke stjele.

Neither shalt thou steal.

Du skal ikke bære falskt vitnesbyrd mot din neste.

Neither shalt thou bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Du skal ikke begjære din nestes kone. Du skal ikke ha lyst til din nestes hus, mark, tjener, tjenestekvinne, okse, esel eller noe som tilhører din neste.

Neither shalt thou sire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Disse ordene talte Herren til hele forsamlingen deres på fjellet ut fra ilden, skyen og det tette mørket med en kraftig stemme, og han la ikke noe til. Han skrev dem på to steintavler og ga dem til meg.

These words the LORD spake unto all your assembly in the mount out of the midst of the fire, of the cloud, and of the thick darkness, with a great voice: and he add no more. And he wrote them in two tables of stone, and livered them unto me.

Og da dere hørte stemmen ut fra mørket mens fjellet brant i ild, kom dere til meg, videre stammehøvdingene deres og eldstene deres,

And it came to pass, when ye heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness, (for the mountain did burn with fire,) that ye came near unto me, even all the heads of your tribes, and your elrs;

og dere sa: Se, Herren vår Gud har vist oss sin herlighet og storhet, og vi har hørt hans stemme ut fra ilden. I dag har vi sett at Gud taler med mennesker, likevel lever de.

And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth.

Hvorfor skulle vi dø nå? Denne store ild vil fortære oss. Hvis vi hører Herrens, vår Guds, stemme enda mer, vil vi dø.

Now therefore why should we die? for this great fire will consume us: if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, then we shall die.

For hvem av alt kjød har hørt den levende Gud tale ut fra ilden, som vi har gjort, og levd?

For who is there of all flesh, that hath heard the voice of the living God speaking out of the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived?

Gå du nærmere og hør alt det Herren vår Gud vil si, og tal til oss alt det Herren vår Gud taler til deg, og vi skal høre det og gjøre det.

Go thou near, and hear all that the LORD our God shall say: and speak thou unto us all that the LORD our God shall speak unto thee; and we will hear it, and do it.

Og Herren hørte stemmen av deres ord mens dere talte til meg, og Herren sa til meg: Jeg har hørt stemmen av ordene til dette folket, som de har talt til deg. De har sagt det rett.

And the LORD heard the voice of your words, when ye spake unto me; and the LORD said unto me, I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken unto thee: they have well said all that they have spoken.

Måtte de bare ha slikt et hjerte i dem at de frykter meg og alltid holder alle mine bud, så det kan gå dem og deres barn vel til evig tid!

O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!

Gå og si til dem: Vend tilbake til teltene deres.

Go say to them, Get you into your tents again.

Men du, bli her ved meg, så vil jeg tale til deg alle budene, lovene og dommene som du skal lære dem, for at de skal gjøre dem i det landet jeg gir dem til å eie.

But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.

Dere skal dere vokte dere for å gjøre som Herren deres Gud har befalt dere. Dere skal ikke vike av til høyre eller til venstre.

Ye shall observe to do therefore as the LORD your God hath command you: ye shall not turn asi to the right hand or to the left.

Dere skal vandre på alle de veiene som Herren deres Gud har befalt dere, så dere kan leve og det kan gå dere vel, og dere kan få lang levetid i det landet dere skal ta i eie.

Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath command you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess.
