Dette er budene, forskriftene og dommene som Herren deres Gud har påbudt å lære dere, for at dere skal gjøre dem i landet som dere drar til for å eie.

Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God command to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

Så du skal frykte Herren din Gud, holde alle hans forskrifter og bud som jeg pålegger deg - du og din sønn og din sønnesønn - alle dagene i ditt liv, for at dine dager kan bli mange.

That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

Hør derfor, Israel, og legg vinn på å følge dem, for at det må gå deg vel, og at dere kan bli mange, slik som Herren, fedrenes Gud, har lovet dere i dette landet som flyter med melk og honning.

Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

Hør, Israel: Herren vår Gud, Herren er én.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Og du skal elske Herren din Gud av hele ditt hjerte, av hele din sjel og av all din kraft.

And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Disse ordene som jeg gir deg i dag, skal være i ditt hjerte.

And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

Og du skal innprente dem i dine barn og snakke om dem når du sitter i ditt hus, når du går på veien, når du legger deg, og når du står opp.

And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

Du skal binde dem som et tegn på din hånd, og de skal være som minnesbånd mellom dine øyne.

And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thine hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes.

Du skal skrive dem på dørstolpene til ditt hus og på dine porter.

And thou shalt write them upon the posts of thy house, and on thy gates.

Når Herren din Gud fører deg inn i det landet som han lovet å gi dine fedre, Abraham, Isak og Jakob - store og gode byer som du ikke har bygd,

And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall have brought thee into the land which he sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee great and goodly cities, which thou buildst not,

hus fulle av alle gode ting som du ikke har fylt, uthogde brønner som du ikke har gravd, vinmarker og oliventrær som du ikke har plantet - når du da spiser deg mett,

And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full;

vokt deg da for å glemme Herren, som førte deg ut av Egypt, fra slavehuset.

Then beware lest thou forget the LORD, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.

Du skal frykte Herren din Gud og tjene ham, og ved hans navn skal du sverge.

Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.

Dere skal ikke følge andre guder, de gudene som folkene rundt dere dyrker.

Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

For Herren din Gud som er blant dere, er en nidkjær Gud, for at Herrens vrede ikke skal flamme opp mot deg og utslette deg fra jordens overflate.

(For the LORD thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and stroy thee from off the face of the earth.

Dere skal ikke friste Herren deres Gud, slik dere fristet ham i Massa.

Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.

Dere skal nøye holde Herrens deres Guds bud og hans vitnesbyrd og forskriftene som han har gitt dere.

Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath command thee.

Og du skal gjøre det som er rett og godt i Herrens øyne, så det må gå deg vel, og du kan komme inn og ta i eie det gode landet som Herren lovet dine fedre,

And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers,

fordi han skal drive ut alle dine fiender foran deg, som Herren har sagt.

To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.

Og når din sønn i fremtiden spør deg: Hva betyr disse vitnesbyrd, forskriftene og dommene som Herren vår Gud har pålagt dere?

And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD our God hath command you?

Da skal du si til din sønn: Vi var slaver under Farao i Egypt, men Herren førte oss ut av Egypt med sterk hånd.

Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:

Herren viste store tegn og under, svære og skremmende tegn mot Egypt, mot Farao og hele hans hus, for våre øyne.

And the LORD shewed signs and wonrs, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:

Han førte oss ut derfra for å føre oss inn og gi oss det landet som han lovet våre fedre.

And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.

Og Herren befalte oss å følge alle disse forskriftene og frykte Herren vår Gud for vårt eget beste, alltid, så han kunne bevare oss i live, slik det er i dag.

And the LORD command us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

Og det skal regnes som våre rettferdige handlinger hvis vi gjør alt dette som Herren vår Gud har befalt oss.

And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the LORD our God, as he hath command us.
