Det skjedde i de dager da Ahasverus regjerte, (det er Ahasverus som regjerte fra India til Etiopia, over hundre og tjuesju provinser):

Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus, (this is Ahasuerus which reigned, from India even unto Ethiopia, over an hundred and seven and twenty provinc:)

At i de dager, da kong Ahasverus satt på tronen i sitt kongerike, som var i Susa, slottet,

That in those days, when the king Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the palace,

I det tredje året av sitt styre, holdt han et gjestebud for alle sine fyrster og tjenere; makten i Persia og Media, de adelige og fyrster av provinsene som var foran ham:

In the third year of his reign, he made a feast unto all his princ and his servants; the power of Persia and Media, the nobl and princ of the provinc, being before him:

Da han i mange dager, hele hundre og åtti dager, viste rikdommen av sitt strålende rike og æren av sin overlegne majestet.

When he shewed the rich of his glorious kingdom and the honour of his excellent majty many days, even an hundred and fourscore days.

Og da disse dagene var over, laget kongen et gjestebud for alle folket som var til stede i Susa, slottet, både store og små, i syv dager, i hagen til kongens palass;

And when the days were expired, the king made a feast unto all the people that were prent in Shushan the palace, both unto great and small, seven days, in the court of the garden of the king's palace;

Hvor det var hvite, grønne og blå forheng, festet med snorer av fint lin og purpur til sølvringer og søyler av marmor: sengene var av gull og sølv, på en marmorlagt plass av rød, blå, hvit og svart marmor.

Where were white, green, and blue, hangings, fastened with cords of fine linen and purple to silver rings and pillars of marble: the beds were of gold and silver, upon a pavement of red, and blue, and white, and black, marble.

Og de fikk servert drikke i gullbegre, (karlene var forskjellige fra hverandre,) og kongelige viner i overflod, i henhold til kongens rang.

And they gave them drink in vsels of gold, (the vsels being diverse one from another,) and royal wine in abundance, according to the state of the king.

Og drikkingen foregikk i henhold til loven; ingen tvang noen: for slik hadde kongen pålagt alle sine hoffmenn, at de skulle gjøre etter hver manns ønske.

And the drinking was according to the law; none did compel: for so the king had appointed to all the officers of his house, that they should do according to every man's pleasure.

Også dronning Vashti holdt et gjestebud for kvinnene i det kongelige huset som tilhørte kong Ahasverus.

Also Vashti the queen made a feast for the women in the royal house which belonged to king Ahasuerus.

På den syvende dagen, da kongen var glad i hjertet av vinen, befalte han Mehuman, Bizta, Harbona, Bigta og Abagta, Zetar og Karkas, de syv hoffmenn som tjente i nærværet av kong Ahasverus,

On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, and Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven chamberlains that served in the prence of Ahasuerus the king,

Å føre dronning Vashti fram for kongen med den kongelige krone, for å vise folkene og fyrstene hennes skjønnhet: for hun var vakker å se på.

To bring Vashti the queen before the king with the crown royal, to shew the people and the princ her beauty: for she was fair to look on.

Men dronning Vashti nektet å komme etter kongens bud fra hans hoffmenn: derfor ble kongen meget vred, og hans sinne brant i ham.

But the queen Vashti refused to come at the king's commandment by his chamberlains: therefore was the king very wroth, and his anger burned in him.

Da sa kongen til de vise menn, som forstod tidene, (for slik var kongens sedvane mot alle som kjente lov og dom:

Then the king said to the wise men, which knew the tim, (for so was the king's manner toward all that knew law and judgment:

Og de nærmest ham var Karsjena, Sjetar, Admata, Tarsis, Meres, Marsena og Memukan, de syv fyrster av Persia og Media, som så kongens ansikt, og som satt først i riket;

And the next unto him was Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Mer, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princ of Persia and Media, which saw the king's face, and which sat the first in the kingdom;)

Hva skal vi gjøre med dronning Vashti i henhold til loven, fordi hun ikke har oppfylt kong Ahasverus' befaling ved hoffmennene?

What shall we do unto the queen Vashti according to law, because she hath not performed the commandment of the king Ahasuerus by the chamberlains?

Og Memukan svarte foran kongen og fyrstene, Dronning Vashti har ikke bare forbrutt seg mot kongen, men også mot alle fyrstene og folket i alle provinsene i kong Ahasverus' rike.

And Memucan answered before the king and the princ, Vashti the queen hath not done wrong to the king only, but also to all the princ, and to all the people that are in all the provinc of the king Ahasuerus.

For denne dronnings handling vil bli kjent av alle kvinner, slik at de vil forakte sine ektemenn i deres øyne, når det blir sagt: Kong Ahasverus befalte dronning Vashti å komme inn foran ham, men hun kom ikke.

For this deed of the queen shall come abroad unto all women, so that they shall dpise their husbands in their ey, when it shall be reported, The king Ahasuerus commanded Vashti the queen to be brought in before him, but she came not.

Likens vil kvinnene fra Persia og Media i dag si dette til alle kongens fyrster, som har hørt om dronningens handling. Slik vil det oppstå mye forakt og vrede.

Likewise shall the ladi of Persia and Media say this day unto all the king's princ, which have heard of the deed of the queen. Thus shall there arise too much contempt and wrath.

Hvis det behager kongen, la det utgå en kongelig befaling fra ham, og la det bli skrevet blant persernes og medernes lover, som ikke kan forandres, At Vashti ikke lenger skal komme inn for kong Ahasverus; og la kongen gi hennes kongelige verdighet til en annen som er bedre enn henne.

If it please the king, let there go a royal commandment from him, and let it be written among the laws of the Persians and the Med, that it be not altered, That Vashti come no more before king Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal tate unto another that is better than she.

Og når kongens dekret som han skal kunngjøre, blir kunngjort gjennom hele hans rike, (for det er stort,) vil alle hustruer gi sine ektemenn ære, både store og små.

And when the king's decree which he shall make shall be published throughout all his empire, (for it is great,) all the wiv shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small.

Og forslaget behaget kongen og fyrstene; og kongen gjorde etter Memukans ord.

And the saying pleased the king and the princ; and the king did according to the word of Memucan:

For han sendte brev til alle kongens provinser, til hver provins i henhold til dens skrift, og til hvert folk etter deres språk, at hver mann skulle være herre i sitt eget hus, og at det skulle kunngjøres etter hvert folks språk.

For he sent letters into all the king's provinc, into every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language, that every man should bear rule in his own house, and that it should be published according to the language of every people.
