Dette er navnene på Israels barn som kom til Egypt; hver mann kom med sitt husfolk sammen med Jakob.

Now these are the names of the children of Israel, which came into Egypt; every man and his household came with Jacob.

Ruben, Simeon, Levi og Juda,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Issakar, Sebulon og Benjamin,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Dan og Naftali, Gad og Asjer.

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

Alle de som stammet fra Jakob, var sytti sjeler; for Josef var allerede i Egypt.

And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls: for Joseph was in Egypt already.

Josef døde, og det gjorde alle hans brødre og hele den generasjonen.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

Israels barn var fruktbare, de økte stort i antall og ble meget mektige, og landet ble fylt med dem.

And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed ceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

Da kom det en ny konge til makten i Egypt, en som ikke kjente Josef.

Now there arose up a new king over Egypt, which knew not Joseph.

Han sa til sitt folk: Se, Israels folk er mer tallrike og sterkere enn vi.

And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we:

La oss derfor handle klokt med dem, så de ikke blir enda flere. For hvis det skulle bli krig, vil de kanskje slå seg sammen med våre fiender, kjempe mot oss og dra ut av landet.

Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land.

Derfor satte de arbeidsformenn over dem for å plage dem med tungt arbeid. De bygde byene Pitom og Ramses som forrådsbyer for farao.

Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

Men jo mer de plaget dem, desto mer økte de i antall og spredte seg. Og egypterne ble engstelige for Israels barn.

But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

Egypterne tvang Israels barn til å arbeide hardt.

And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour:

De gjorde livene deres bitre med tungt arbeid, med å lage mursten og mørtel, og med alle slags oppgaver på markene. All tjenesten de påla dem, var med hardt arbeid.

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour.

Kongen i Egypt snakket til de hebraiske jordmødrene, hvorav den ene het Sifra og den andre Pua:

And the king of Egypt spake to the Hebrew midwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah:

Når dere hjelper de hebraiske kvinnene med å føde, og ser på fødekrakkene, hvis det er en sønn, skal dere drepe ham, men hvis det er en datter, skal hun få leve.

And he said, When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the stools; if it be a son, then ye shall kill him: but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.

Men jordmødrene fryktet Gud og gjorde ikke som kongen av Egypt befalte dem; de lot guttebarna leve.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men children alive.

Kongen i Egypt kalte på jordmødrene og sa til dem: Hvorfor har dere gjort dette og latt guttebarna leve?

And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them, Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men children alive?

Jordmødrene svarte farao: Fordi de hebraiske kvinnene ikke er som de egyptiske kvinnene; de er sterke og føder før jordmoren rekker å komme til dem.

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh, Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwives come in unto them.

Og Gud gjorde vel mot jordmødrene, og folket økte i antall og ble svært mektige.

Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty.

Fordi jordmødrene fryktet Gud, ga han dem familier.

And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made them houses.

Da befalte farao hele sitt folk: Alle gutter som blir født, skal dere kaste i elven, men alle jenter skal få leve.

And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.
