Hele menigheten av Israels barn dro videre fra ørkenen Sin, alt etter reisenes rekkefølge, ifølge Herrens befaling, og de slo leir i Rephidim. Men der fantes det ikke vann for folket å drikke.

And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

Derfor klandret folket Moses og sa: Gi oss vann så vi kan drikke! Men Moses svarte dem: Hvorfor klandrer dere meg? Hvorfor setter dere Herren på prøve?

Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

Folket tørstet der etter vann, og de klaget mot Moses og sa: Hvorfor har du ført oss opp fra Egypt for å la oss, barna våre og buskapen dø av tørst?

And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

Og Moses ropte til Herren og sa: Hva skal jeg gjøre med dette folket? De er nesten klare til å steine meg.

And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

Herren sa til Moses: Gå foran folket og ta med deg noen av Israels eldste. Ta staven, som du slo elven med, i hånden og gå.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

Se, jeg vil stå foran deg der på klippen ved Horeb. Du skal slå på klippen, og det vil komme vann ut av den, slik at folket kan drikke. Moses gjorde dette foran øynene til Israels eldste.

Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Han kalte stedet Massah og Meriba, fordi Israels barn hadde klandret og satt Herren på prøve, og spurt: Er Herren blant oss eller ikke?

And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Da kom Amalek og kjempet mot Israel i Rephidim.

Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

Moses sa til Josva: Velg ut noen menn for oss, og gå ut og kjemp mot Amalek. I morgen vil jeg stå på toppen av åsen med Guds stav i hånden.

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

Josva gjorde som Moses sa og kjempet mot Amalek, mens Moses, Aron og Hur gikk opp på toppen av åsen.

So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Og så lenge Moses holdt hånden oppe, hadde Israel overtaket, men når han lot hånden synke, fikk Amalek overtaket.

And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

Men Moses' hender ble tunge, så de tok en stein og la den under ham, og han satte seg på den. Aron og Hur støttet hendene hans, en på hver side, så hendene hans holdt seg oppe til solen gikk ned.

But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

Og Josva svekket Amalek og hans folk med sverdets egg.

And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

Herren sa til Moses: Skriv dette opp i en bok som et minne, og gjenta det for Josva: Jeg vil fullt og helt utslette minnet om Amalek under himmelen.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Moses bygde et alter og kalte det Jehova-nissi.

And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:

For han sa: Herren har sverget at han vil ha krig mot Amalek fra generasjon til generasjon.

For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.
